I used to play all the time. I have Fritz 8 (multiprocessor version) and I think I've only drawn it like once in my life. I've played Fritz 8 against 3 other computer programs that I have and it wins every time. Amazing.
I can't even imagine what Fritz 11 is capable of.
I should get back into chess during this winter season. Lots of time to sit back and play a relaxing game of chess.

Not sure what you mean. I set it to 3 Ply and had no trouble beating it at all.
Took like 24 moves and I mated him with a rook advantage in about 8 minutes.
I'll try higher levels, but it doesn't appear that strong at all. Most computers are fairly strong at 3 Ply.
Try "ChessGenius". I have it on my PDA and it's quite strong. Still nowhere near as strong as Fritz, but not bad for a portable game.

Hmm, i did not set anything, just load it up and move a piece, i can't win a game
I've tried for hours. It's incredibly hard to gain just a one piece advantage. It's incredibly strong to me and i'm far from a noob. Try without setting anything and have it load up and just move. Gonna check out chessgenius and fritz, but have my hands full trying to win one game on that link i gave

I see. Well, by default, you're playing 5 Ply, which is pretty harsh. The ELO rating claimed by 5 Ply on that program is 1705, which is very high.
I doubt I could win a game at that level, either, especially against a computer that rarely overlooks easy opportunities, which a human opponent of that same ELO rating might miss.
Try 3 or 4 Ply and see if you can beat it.

i beat that computer link on my first try at default settings in just a few minutes. it made a really stupid move at the end though.

I played a guy named Federerofchess a few times. After I beat him, I told him that I was his Nadal! I'm mikeler1 or mikeler9 depending on which account I happened to be logged into at the time. I like to play timed games about 10 or 15 minutes per opponent. Anything longer than that and my impatience takes over. I'll keep an eye out for you.
Yahoo chess always recognizes double checks for me. For some reason, it does not seem to recover well if you lose your internet connection even for a few seconds. I'd guess that is what happens.

I used to love chess a few months ago (i just started playin seriously at the start of the year having played it quite a lot 3-4 years previously), but now i feel kinda burned out after playin so many games, studyin openings etc.

How To Beat Your Dad at Chess is a great read. It is one of those books where you only get the pattern to match about every 1 of every 200 games, but it is satisfying when you can get one of the killer checkmates to work. I have never studied openings, I just stick with a few I know and use them all the time.

I played three games today at 4 Ply and lost the first two by making blunders (I was at work and playing very quickly). The third game I avoided making blunders by playing a bit safer and won the game via checkmate in about 18 moves. I think the game lasted about 5 minutes. I was taking about 5 seconds for each of my own moves.
I don't see why I wouldn't be able to at least draw or beat that game at 4 Ply every time if I paid attention to my moves. Tomorrow over lunch I'll try a game at 5 Ply.

For those of you who only play computers, I do recommend signing up to a website where you can play other people. Much like tennis, everybody has their own distinct style. Some players go on all out assaults with no thought of defense (Big Bangers). Other players are more defensive and wait for their opponents to make mistakes to win (Pushers).
Different players use different openings which always makes each game interesting. It seems like most players have one or two common traps that they'll try to get their opponent to fall into. It is very satisfying to play somebody who may beat you the first 2 times, but then you figure out their main line of strategy and force them to do something different in order to beat them. Just like tennis.

I'm not as good as my high school days...
I played chess for a couple of seasons and was never any good at it. Reached a score of 1300 ELO and decided that it was too damaging for my EGO.
I studied the other players at my club and found out that the main difference between me and them was the fact that when it was their move, they studied the situation and after only a few seconds they had a clue what to do. They used their time too check their instinct.
When it was my turn I never had a clue what to do. I used my time to evaluate all possible moves that came to hand and finally always decided for one that would make me lose.
Because I like to think of myself as having above average intellectual capabilities, it always was a blow to this self-estimation. It was especially very shattering to lose from kids and women.
In tennis I also lose, but then I shrug it off by telling myself, it is only a game. Chess is different. It is commiting yourself as an intellectual being. Losing really hurts! After my nth defeat I gave up!

Any chess player worth their salt knows notation. It's not that difficult for me to memorize, subconsciously, entire games as I play them.
I'm sorry, are you claiming that you subconsciously memorize all the moves and notate them while you play?
Because I know I can't do that.

This is funny, because when I was asking for proof, I was kidding. But posting a screenshot is a good idea. I can remember the moves of the last game I played if I did it out on a board, but not from straight memory, you'd have to be a chess freak if you can do that. If you beat it on the hardest level great. Then you should go play Fritz and see if you can beat one of the harder not hardest but harder levels. That stuff is no joke!

I used to play casually as a teenager, but stopped for years. Then I stumbled across this discussion, so I decided refresh my memory with the rules of the game. A google search for “chess blackberry” eventually led to Odesys dot com. I downloaded their free “lite” version for beginners. After beating it 40 times, it seduced me into downloading the full range of levels (including some of the world's hardest) –the entire package was less than five dollars total.
Excellent graphics (on a BlackBerry Tour 9630), great experience overall.

Same here; that's why I started playing chess last week – on my phone (in between calls and appreciating the women in the Best Legs thread).
I appreciate your invitation Zapvor, though I need to practice my chess skills first – so that I don't waste your time. However, if the current heat wave (thanks to global warming) stays above 30 F with no wind, let's play tennis next week.
