【】Plz give instruction to my serve

first, basically, there are 2 serving style in top 10: one is like the roddick's, the other is like the federer's, can you agree with me?

i always serve just like federer‘s style, but when i look my vids, i found that
after tossing the ball, until it's high enough, then i swing the serve hand. so the result is: i should toss the ball much higher and it's not stabilized! and always i hit the ball when it's drop and i think it's not good

so i want to change the style from roger's to roddick's. I noticed that that style save much time that maybe i can get more time before i hit the ball so i can toss the ball much low.

so is it a good idea? can you guys give me some instruction?

thanks!

My belief is that the Federer service motion is probably a better one for most players to emulate. The Roddick service action is more appropriate for very advanced players. The only part of Andy's action that you should probably imitate (or simulate) is his abbreviated racket preparation. For all other aspects of the service motion I would look more at Fed (or Sampras).

u got it!

i just want to make use of the abbreviated racket preparation to give me more time to hit the ball.

but i am afraid that maybe some disadvantage will appear so i come here for some advice. After all, changing the style is a big action for everybody

^ I believe that Andy's abbreviated racket takeback should simplify both the service mechanics & the timing. I would think that with just a little bit of experimentation and adjustment you should probably be able to make it work you.

Note that the Fed serve is a variation of the Sampras serve. Roger undoubtedly studied Pete's serve to develop his own. I did the same thing about 12+ yrs ago. However, my takeback was never as full (exaggerated) as the huge, delayed loop that Sampras employed. Several years back, I modifed my racket prep so that it was more like Roddick's. I found the adjustment very simple. However, not everyone can make those types of adjustments without some help from a coach (or from a friend with a good eye for serve mechanics).

um no theres also those classic fed take bak with the pin point stance roddick uses as well :D. I think fed's serve is better to look at since its more proper and less modified.

I'd like to think there are more than TWO basic serving styles.
Maybe closer to 15.
I can employ Roddicks even as a lefty, it goes fast, goes wide, and hurts my trunk/stomach/arm.
So I use MY serve style, a cross between ALL the top players, but mostly with a flavor towards MY hitches, flaws, and abberations.:shock:
OK, age and injuries, gravitating towards the really tall, stiff moving, big serving right handed non athletes style of serving.

Is it bad to use roddick's abbreviated style b/c of injuries? Ive heard from alot of ppl that they got injuries from this.

We are all built differently, have different kinds and amounts of muscle, tendon, and ligaments, and we all use our body kinetics differently, even for such mundane chores as typing.
Personally, I use long smooth strokes to generation rackethead speed. Some like Courier tend to shorter, quicker strokes. Some like Fed use their strokes.
I can only say... "try it".
His service motion actually works for me on one particular serve...the lefty duece court out wide flat first serve that lands wider than the intersecting lines. Every other serve, I employ MY motion.

I do not believe that it is the abbreviated takeback that is stressful to the shoulder and arm. However, there may be other aspects of Andy's serve that could possibly cause damage to the shoulder or arm if they are performed in a manner that is not appropriate for the individuals anatomy.

I don't think roddick and fed's serve would cause more injury than one another. The mechanics of hitting the ball are the same. Roddick's is just a lot more abbreviated (shortened length) and thus he has to exert alot more power / speed into it. That's a hard part for us non pro.

To me the best way to learn to serve correctly is understand where on the ball to hit and where the potential power comes from. When that is understood, timing and direction can be refined. For timing, just slow down and be smooth; and for direction, well, just hit alot of balls and aim at where to send it.

You should try and emulate Roddicks serve for a while, and you can make an educated reply.
His need for quicker racket head acceleration than Feds motion is the problem for us mere mortals. We can accelerate almost to his speed, but it's the motion that hurts the majority of us, as was stated by several of us who actually tried his motion.

Speed is ALWAYS a problem for me. If I was faster, I'd be better. But.
I can pretty much match my top first serve speed with Roddick's motion, but over time, it hurts my back, torso, and frontal muscles.
Most other guys say pretty much the same thing.
It's always good to comment from a basis of actual experience, rather than speculation or guessing.
