University of Tulsa Senior Arnau Brugues was named the No. 1 singles player in the nation for the second time this season by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association in the latest National Men's Singles poll released on Tuesday. Brugues was also named the Conference USA Men's Tennis Player of the Week by the league office for the fourth time this season and for the 11th time in his career.
Brugues earned the honors after going 4-0 in No. 1 singles, picking up three wins over nationally-ranked opponents this past week. The Barcelona, Spain, native defeated then top-ranked Robert Farah of Southern California, 6-3, 6-2, on March 16, and knocked off San Diego's 81st-ranked Dean Jackson 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, on March 10. He also beat California's 119th-ranked Pedro Zerbini, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, on March 14, and Michigan State's John Allare, 6-3, 6-4, on March 13.
The three-time All-American was named the No. 1 singles player in the ITA singles poll released on Feb. 17, but dropped to No. 3 in the March 3rd poll. Brugues has won 16 consecutive singles matches and owns a 32-3 singles record on the season, including 19 wins over nationally-ranked opponents.
