University of Tulsa Senior Arnau Brugues was named the No. 1 singles player in the nation for the second time this season by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association in the latest National Men's Singles poll released on Tuesday. Brugues was also named the Conference USA Men's Tennis Player of the Week by the league office for the fourth time this season and for the 11th time in his career.
Brugues earned the honors after going 4-0 in No. 1 singles, picking up three wins over nationally-ranked opponents this past week. The Barcelona, Spain, native defeated then top-ranked Robert Farah of Southern California, 6-3, 6-2, on March 16, and knocked off San Diego's 81st-ranked Dean Jackson 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, on March 10. He also beat California's 119th-ranked Pedro Zerbini, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, on March 14, and Michigan State's John Allare, 6-3, 6-4, on March 13.
The three-time All-American was named the No. 1 singles player in the ITA singles poll released on Feb. 17, but dropped to No. 3 in the March 3rd poll. Brugues has won 16 consecutive singles matches and owns a 32-3 singles record on the season, including 19 wins over nationally-ranked opponents.

Yeah, he must be playing awesome.I remember when he said:I am going to the states to play college tennis.After that decision I guess he had no more pressure and went on to be around 600 ATP.
He always was pretty strong.His wide open kick serve of the deuce side was or is awesoome.
Hope he will find a sponsor who sponsors him the travelling and everything.

yes Arnau is very solid and had very good wins but Robert Farrah hurt his back before the match so its not that impressing but its still good to beat the number 1 player in the country. P.S. if im not mistaken Rob Farrah beat him last year so let that settle

No! He had a very good Freshman year, not a great one. J.P.Smith, on the other hand, had a great Freshman year and looks to be continuing on with it.

I do admire any of these young players that make it to that level of tennis. They're fantastic and I love watching them play in person.

Has he played Michael Venus from LSU? What were the scores? I am fairly impressed with Venus, I think he has some nagging injuries or something. Anyone out there know?

OK, well if what you are saying is true, then everyone should at least look up to them. Those are the people who defined college tennis over the past years (even though some have poor personality), so they should cetainly be noted in this sort of discussion, I think.

I agree with Somdev.
Yes Treat and Martin are really good players, but there are lots of really good players in college. Those two are no more special than any other top 30 guy.

Could you elaborate on what you mean by, "defined college tennis"?

Edit: Martin Sayer is still playing - he is ranked #120 right now.

I guess they defined it for me, now that I think about it. I guess I just knew those three better, so I really knew that they were good, not just from the rankings and such. I certainly did not mean that to disrespect others, I am not suggesting they are better than you for instance, because I know from the forum that you are good too. Have you played any of those three?

Oh and thanks for pointing out that Sayer is still senior - I've been out of the loop since last summer, and the other poster ClarkC only confused me.

I live in Moscow, but I used to live in DC, so very close!:) No, I know you are really good and I know you're in SC for Furman. I guess I just knew those three better, and it just makes you a little bit biased. Sayer is actually my favourite college player probably of the current ones. It's awesome though that you are on par with him or thereabouts. Do you actually get into the same draws with him? I don't mean because of levels of play, I just don't know how the team and individual tournaments line up in the South.

But anyways, it's very nice of you to post around here. I've played against your type before, and it did not come out pretty...:(

Denes Lukacs will most likely to play Alex Clayton next Tuesday at Baylor. After he wins that match,, Alex should be #1 in the world.. lol

So bad I was looking at pics of treat playing Davis cup for the phillipines and he was using the exo3 rebel. It must be nicel because he was a diehard prestige user.

So., What has last year got to do with this year?

BTW, you show up for your match and play. It's not, "I'm here but I'm hurt so if you beat me, it's not really a win."

Iv seen clayton play and yeah he is really good but he aint AMAZING... Is there really this much need to mak a giant deal about him fed? Its lik ur in luv with the guy.

If you look at the rankings, only two sophomores are ahead of Alex Clayton. One is Michael Shabaz, who is only two spots ahead. The other is J.P. Smith of Tennessee, via Australia.

So, Clayton and Shabaz are the top of the American recruiting class from two years ago. But it is hard for sophomores to be the best in the nation. There are recruits from all over the world, including Americans, who were top notch and who are juniors and seniors. It is no surprise that some of them are ranked ahead of the sophomores. There is no need to overestimate what the sophomores will accomplish.

Fedace is setting Clayton up to look like his season was a disappointment if he "only" finishes in the top 20, when in fact that is an excellent season and would position him to have great junior and senior seasons.

Yes, and Connors and McEnroe were #1 as freshmen. So what? Most top recruits are not top 3 as freshmen. My point is that Fedace does not have to exaggerate when predicting what Clayton will accomplish. He is right on course with any other top American his age.

I saw Venus at the UGA - LSU match and was impressed with him. He looked okay to me. Won an impressive match vs. Nate Schnugg 6-3,5-7,7-6(4).

If he can be more consistant with his backhand and get more depth then he will be a different player and will make impact in the pros. also Alex needs to feel more comfortable at net.

Yeah, Venus is a top player. I had just wondered if he had an injury, or something that was out of whack. I saw him last year, and thought he would be in the top five.

I saw Denes Lukacs play last night, he overwhelmed Dimitar Kutrovsky (#14) 6-1, 6-4. I was very impressed, he has a pro level forehand for sure. He still has a juniors mentality of making horrible calls and celebrating excessively, but I think he can make it to the next level.

Whoa! The March 31 rankings show the two in-state Oklahoma players battling it out. Oklahoma State's Oleksandr Nedovyesov is .3's of a point ahead of Tulsa's Arnau Brugues.
Some great tennis players living in this state right now. Can I figure out a way to hit with both of these guys?

Paying them is probably the only way they are going to hit with you unless you have some of inside connection. There are college players who do this. Everything is cash under the table though.

I played against Division 1 player in a league match about 3 years ago and i didn't have to pay a penny.

Man, Talk about a statement. Tulsa's Arnau Brugues, the second-ranked singles player in the nation, went to Stillwater (Home of Okla State) and clobbered #1 Oleksandr Nedovyesov, 6-2, 6-1, in No. 1 singles.

Wow.
