Franco Davin, whom i also saw for the first time at Countrywide, was with Delpo at that time, having apparently started with him in the spring of 2008. David has been widely credited (especially by del Potro, himself) with guiding his rise from #56 to #5 in the past 9 months.

I've heard some announcers refer to del Potro as a brute, a monster, 6'9", intimidating, etc. This interviewer, after Delpo's R16 win against Nishikori at San Jose, asked whether he was "really" just 20 years old, to which Delpo responded, "Yes. Do you want to see my passport?" That made everybody laugh, but I'm sure it's a regular thing for Juan.

Nadal looks tiny next to JMDP.

this might sound wierd, but back when i was still in a "say it aint so, rafa" phase (about his changing to polo shirts), I wondered what it would be like to see a player who hadn't beaten him before do so in the sleeveless. monfils did it first, and the along came delpo! :D

Nice thread. Thanks for the info. I hope Delpo will continue to do well.

Nice thread. I think Delpo shows a lot of promise.

thanks :) after i saw delpo at countrywide, i went back into my wimby files and found an early round match 2008 where he was excused by wawrinka (from where he went to stutgart and the rest is history) ..... anyway, the announcers were going on and on about the depth of field in argentine tennis. the only one i'd heard about at that time was nalbandian ...... anyway I kinda like the "new face" of #5 and, like you both, hope he's able to fulfill all the hopes and good wishes for his future! He seems to have a good head on his shoulders, tons of talent, a great coach at his back, and with nalby as his dubs pard, how can he not succeed?

The Argentines have a strong group of tennis players on the men's tour. It's nice to see such a strong push from a country such as Argentina.

interesting you should mention that, because there are a few argentines on court already this morning, including J. Chela, who's back inthe locker room, having won his match vs. erstwhile davis cup opponent igor kunitsyn.

on court at the moment is another argentine, eduardo schwank, playing marc gicquel of france in monte carlo, now showing @

also on court at the moment is another of my argentine faves, juan monaco, who is playing jeremy chardy of france @

also, J Acasuso (arg) is currently in his second set vs M Granollers (esp) ..... so argentine talent being well exercised this week in monte carlo.

Del Potro has a bye for the first round, so he won't be playing until tomorrow.

Personally I think it's the polo collars.

I'm slowly acclimating to the sleeves (I think I'm in the minority of loving all the AO outfits, sparkly shorts and all, even though sleeveless will always rule when the boys can carry it and Rafa's early mentor, Moya, is another who still carries it well - there aren't many) -- but when Rafa lost to Monfils? Polo collar.

QF to Delpito? Polo collar.
CREWNECKS ONLY, RAFA!!

Not to derail your thread, it's a great one. I remember you and I were talking about calling it even before LA, at Stuttgart.

And much credit to Mr. Davin. Wasn't he a pretty well-decorated player in his heyday?

I completely agree about the crew necks ... those polo collars just have too much fabric in them for comfort on the tennis court, IMHO.

as for the rest ... i'll get back to ya ... too busy at the moment watching the eyecandy of monaco v. chardy

imo delpo should develop a deadly serve. with his current groundstrokes which are top class already he needs a more reliable serve which is very possible with his height, so he can have more confidence while trying to hold serve and use his groundstrokes to break the opponent. he can break the big 4 if he managed to do so.

i agree to a certain extent ... his serve seems to have improved over the past 6 months, tho as you say it could be a much bigger weapon for him.

i'd also like to see him coming to net a bit more because of his "wide wing span" as they say :)

of course, at world no. 1, rafa is at the very top of the "big 4"

LOL! Someone photoshopped the unibrow. Gotta let that ride!

I like his despite the unibrow, but I wish he'd be a little more consistent week in and week out.

According to his win/loss record on the ATP website JMDP is 19-5 ... 19 wins to 5 losses ..... How much more consistency do you demand?
