She's never won a slam yet Safina's #1 in the world.

You're skating on thinnish ice here Max - some people might argue that it's wrong to make number 3 in the world without winning a slam....:)

Safina is number 1 becasue she has the most ranking points.

I understand when people question it, but at the moment she is playing the best tennis by far. She is on a roll and will probably do very well at Roland Garros.

Based on the way she was playing when she got the top spot I didn't think she really deserved it. She wasn't playing like number 1 at all. Since getting it she has been reenergized and it seems to have given her the kick in the but she needed to start playing the tennis that got her to number 2 last summer. Based on her and the rest of the tour, she deserves it whether she has a slam or not. Does Serena deserve the top spot because she won the last 2 majors? what has she done otherwise, zip apart from the final in Miami. Dinara currently is the best on the tour, whether after the french she remains in the top spot is up to her.

She's clearly been the most consistent and best player over the past 12 months. I also have a feeling that she won't be without a slam for much longer.

The WTA is in a sad, sad, state, for sure.

Well, i think #3 is the highest you should be without a slam.

No, Ivanovic won RG before she was #1.

Also nothing wrong with Safina being #1.

From my knowledge, i don't remember anyone else being #1 without a slam.

There have been plenty of #1s without slams. Usually, a player will win a slam after being #1, so its not memorable that they were #1 without a big title. If you make the finals of every slam and lose to 4 different players, who gets to be #1 according to your rule?

Mauresmo did it, Clijsters did it, Jankovic did it before ever even reaching a slam final. On the men's side Rios. There may be more.

Safina is starting to look like a pretty fitting number 1 of late, if she wins in RG she'll be firmly perched up there having done back to back premier events + a GS and I don't think there'll be anymore qualms.

Jankovic got there on less which is truly baffling

WTA: Mauresmo, Clijsters, Jankovic
ATP: Rios

Ranking points are not equal to number of slams won. Why is it so hard for many people to understand.

Safina is the best of the worst right now.

She deserves it more than the other jokers in the top 10 thats for sure.

Who else would you put as #1? There isn't a clearly dominant player at the moment. Safina isn't such a bad #1 compared to others.

Aslo, all this number 1 players had quite alot MS (or Tier I) to achive that status plus some finals, so they do deserve it.

For example, Rios lost the final of the AO to Korda (who later was banned for drug use short after the slam) and still reached #1 position after the Miami masters

Well, i don't think that Safina is the best player in the world right now. She has just gotten incredibly lucky what Henin is gone, Sharapova has been injured, and the Williams' sisters have been in a sort of funk. i don't expect this ranking of her's to last long...

Everybody keeps using these excuses for Henin. Someone brought this up in another thread, one of the reasons Henin retired is that she was getting beat down. First she got beaten by Sharapova in Australia handily, then Serena beat her down in Miami. Then in her last match, she lost on clay to...Safina. Henin was a great player, but all great players have their end, and it's no guarantee that Henin would still be #1 today if she had continued the form she showed early last yr. I think that she saw that the end of her run at #1 was nearing, and decided to retire.

Well, at least she has a couple runner-up finishes to her credit. Were you watching last year when Jankovic was #1 without even making a Slam final?

How is BreakPoint the GOAT? You should at least own a big website(such a Tennis Warehouse or tennisplayer or MTF) to have such a title. I refuse to believe a mere troll has the most posts!

roddick has superior slam results than murray, even at the same age, but murray is ranked ahead.

i would rather pull a gaudio and have a ranking of 5 and win a slam than murray with a ranking of 3 with a RU medal

i am going to respectfully disagree with you on this one...i think henin just burned out and her poor results leading up to her retirement were because of that. Would she be #1 today? Not sure...but she would definitely be ranked ahead of Safina. She is much better player than Safina.

I agree, she was burned out. But isn't that natural, what with being #1 for over a year, going through a divorce, it's understandable that she burned out. I just don't agree with people, and I'm not saying you're one of them, who say that Henin would still be the clear #1 if she was still playing.

Henin was playing her worst tennis the few months before her retirement. That is why her results were bad for a bit, it had absolutely nothing to do with her opponents. However she could still win the French at 40% since the Williams at this point in time cant even beat her 40% on clay and the women who could beat her 40% on clay- Safina, Kuznetsova, etc...would just choke at the French anyway like they choke in any slam they have a chance to win. Then she would post consistent enough results with enough tournaments to be the clear #1 just by winning the French each year, which she was certain to even if she continued in bad form for the reasons I explained. If she regained some sort of form, more likely, she would probably still dominate like she did in 2007.

I think the new Safina would muscle Henin around the court today. That's just my opinion. And it had to have something to do with her opponents, she lost to Safina and she went on to be FO finalist. She'd probably still be favored at the French, yes. But I don't think you can automatically assume she'd still be #1.

The new Safina cant even win a slam in the current pathetic womens field. If Henin was anywhere near her best she would easily beat Safina, and even if she wasnt she would beat her at any of the 4 slams by virtue of Safina's gauranteed choke vs her first tough opponent of any slam as Navratilovafan said. If Safina wins the French Open this year in dominating fashion, and I mean it would have to be literally dominating fashion amongst the current joke field of womens clay courters, and then reaches atleast the semis of Wimbledon and atleast takes whichever Williams she plays first to three sets, then we can talk. Until then forget it.

I don't think that Safina's peaked yet. Let's give her more chances to see how she does as #1. This French is going to go a long way as far as rather she's a deserving #1 or not.

As far as chokes, let's not forget Henins all time choke in the Wimby SF vs Bartoli. And the retirement in the AO final vs. Mauresmo. This is what I was talking about, it's not as though Henin was unbeatable, even at her best. Close to it, but not. Henin gets treated as a god on here, why, I don't know. She's a great player, yes, but she also had some bad moments and losses in her career, don't forget about those.

Sure I am willing to give Safina a bit more time. Now is her proving point though, it starts now. Right now she hasnt shown anything yet to even compare her to even a below her best Henin. Like I said I am open to reentering this topic if Safin wins this years French Open in crushing fashion, and if heaven forbid she finds anyway to not atleast win this years French Open in her current form agaisnt this joke clay court field forget reentering this topic with me for atleast another several years, and if she then follows that by atleast making a real impact at the final 2 slams, preferably winning 1 of those as well.

No Henin is not a goddess. She choked sometimes, but she still won 7 slams in 5 years vs a field not quite as bad for the most part as the current one (well 2007 apart from her was same as now mind you). Safina still hasnt proven she can win a slam even vs the current pathetic field, that is why compared to someone like Safina, Henin will come across as a god for now.

Henin is talked about as a goddess because compared to the current womens field she is. She is so much better than anything that is left now. What we see is a grossly out of shape, uncommited, shadow of her old self Serena winning slams still with help from her mentally feeble opponents often choking away leads and matches to her. Then a bunch of slamless or 1-time fluke slam wannabees surrounding her. The other Williams who these days hibernates except for Wimbledon and 1 or 2 other tournnaments. An always injured Sharapova. So compared to the current field she is a goddess. If she were in the era of Navratilova, Evert, Mandlikova or Graf, Seles, Sanchez she wouldnt be talked about as a goddess, just an important player, the current womens field is so bad it makes her into one.

Slams only help a player reach #1 faster because or the many points involved. But a consistent player can reach #1 by winning many tournaments.
