Yea, I think that someone said, "look, if someone comes along and wins 25 or more grand slams, ya, it's kind of case closed". Federer possibly getting to 14 makes a very strong case, especially if he does it here at the FO.

But even 16-18, which still is within his reach, isn't exactly "case closed".

I mean, "case closed" is kind of defined by what we would think of as an impossible accomplishment. I think that 25 grand slams is basically impossible. It would boggle my mind.

Then again, 20 straight semi-finals is kind of mind-boggling too.

GOAT is a very subjective topic...Everyone will not have the same GOAT...Honestly IMO there is no such thing as a GOAT...

That being said Federer IMO is the best & the most complete player I have ever seen

Only if Federer accomplishes the following:

1. He beats Nadal in every single round of every single major. The rules will be changed so that Nadal can stay in the tournament even if he loses to Federer once, twice, etc.

2. Both matches have at least three days of rest between them so that Nadal cannot be tired.

3. Nadal doesn't commit a single unforced error so we can know that he was playing well.

4. Federer also cannot commit a single error so we know that he was also playing well and didn't luck his way into a victory.

5. All matches must be on slow clay or slow grass.

6. All matches must be played at sea level.

7. Federer must serve under-handed so that his superior serve doesn't get him free points.

8. There must be no audience so that the crowd is not a factor.

9. Federer must always serve from the sunny side.

10. ???

I think that should be enough.

Well, under the rules, his draw would be:

128: Nadal
64: Nadal
32: Nadal
16: Nadal
QF: Nadal
SF: Nadal
F: Nadal

Exactly. And that's only for the first 3 calendar GrandSlams.
For the rest of the calendar GrandSlams,Roger has to invent a time-machine and go back in time to play Sampras and Laver in their PRIME and beat each 10 times, before he can be considered GOAT.

Great post. I agree with you re: Federer, but disagree with those posters who seem to be taking it personally that not everyone views Fed and his career accomplishments the same way.

How can someone be the GOAT if he gets dominated by Nadal? Sampras is still the greatest because he never lost a match, unlike this Federer mug who not only loses, but to the same guy multiple times.

I justed wanted to see how many *********s would still vote "No". :-?
Do you mean 100 (calendar year) Grand Slams, that is all four per year for 100 years, equaling 400 majors?

Well, yes then he would be. But I'll be dead before he finishes in 2110.

Nah. At that point, I'd be sure that he cheated in some way. He'd have to win all 4 grand slams for the next two-and-some decades - impossible without some medical breakthrough (which, in itself, would make comparison to former players nonsensical).

BP,

If you really want to know how far Federer haters would go, you should've proposed a plausible number of major wins like 25. I know Federer will probably win about 2-3 more majors, but it amazes me that some people on these boards will still say he's not the GOAT w/ 25 majors.

I myself am actually not sure whether he is right now, but a win tomorrow will def. make him the GOAT imo.

To win a 100 Grand Slams would take 25 years at LEAST (winning the calendar grand slam every year) and by the 16th GS people would get bored of tennis so by the 100th GS tennis would become an obscure sport only watched by the most hardcore of tennis fans and, ofcourse, *******s.

I doubt that there ever will be "undisputed" GOAT,we all have our own theories on who GOAT is and it's hard to compare eras anyway because of equipment, change of conditions and surfaces, competition etc. so I really doubt that there will ever be a definite answer who the best ever is.

No, since I can't look into the future or know the true strength of those in the past.

He's pretty awesome, though.

Well lets say Fed had won a more realistic number like 20 slam titles. Many posters on this board would discredit his accomplishments because of a weak era. The evidence would be that he would face very few players who have a slam title to their name. Its a Catch 22 really, if Fed is too dominant than his opponents are weak because they lack slam titles (because Fed is winning them all), but if Fed is not dominant enough, then it means he is in a strong era (with multiple slam winners), but he's just a good but not great player.

Yeah, sure. Sampras went 1,000,000 and 0 in his career, right?

I guess you missed Sampras' US Open finals against Edberg, Safin, and Hewitt, ans his Aus Open final against Agassi, and his Wimbledon matches against Federer and Krajicek, too.

Well, so far, 44% of the voters voted "No".

This just goes to prove how many *********s there are on this board.

Enough said.

It's possible for him to get to 100 slams, but even if he did, I'd question his GOAT status.
Here's what would hold him back:

His backhand is suspect and he shanks too many forehands.
He needs to switch racquets to whatever the guys here prefer.
He trembles too much, even on his way to winning.
He is a realllly lucky individual.
He's sliiiightly effeminate.
His wife is not really hot enough for most posters here.
He is really classy, but he's also arrogant at times.
He is physically fit and mentally tough enough to win a LOT of matches (100 slams), but deep down, he has too many complexes about macho, tan dudes who are way stronger in spirit, mind and body.
He has a fragrance line. THAT, my friends, is a dealbreaker!
And if that's not good enough for you.....I'll just pull out the serious dealbreaker. One word: MANPURSE.

Case closed.
Game, set, match: Mr. Laver.

If he wins the next 2 Wimbledon and U.S. Open titles (the most important slams IMO), he's the GOAT--at least in number of slams (judging that status on talent is another discussion).

Yeh, but that would only be like 17 or 18 slams. Not enough, given his poor records against Murray, Djerkovic and Rafa.
Roger is so weak in every other totally subjective category, he'll need over a hundred slams to sniff entry to the International Tennis Hall of Fame. I'm telling you, he needs a larger headed racquet. He's lucky he wears a headband/bandana. Can you imagine how bad his record would be if he still wore hats? Don't even get me started on the other stuff.

That one does it,no real need to list other reasons.Fed's quest to become a GOAT became completely fruitless the day he walked on centre court of Wimbledon carrying a friggin manpurse :).

Blazer? okay.
Cable knit sweater vest, even. Fine.....it's like Hoad/Laver/ Pancho....cool.
Long pants? Sure, Elly Vines/Fred Perry look. Very sharp, especially given the mild temperatures.
Shoes with his name on them and a bunch of cups? A little much, but...great. It was Phil KNight's doing, let's reckon.

But a quilted, white leather manpurse with a gold NIKE logo?
Sorry, Roger. Love you, man, but....sorry. Take it to the Gay Games in Germany next year. Earn your man card back and we can talk about GOAT status.

EDIT:
Speaking of earning his man card. I've softened my stance on Roger as he's about to become a father. That's one of the most blessed events ever, and I do wish him well. He's already one of the Greatest anyway. I wish him the very best tomorrow.

Allez Rog!

There isn't a GOAT because logically there can't be!

imo, there's only the best player in a decade or so. Borg in the 70's , Ivan in the 80's, Pete in the 90's. Federer is the best in this decade, and will probably also win the 2009 FO - in the unlikely event Nadal then wins the next 6 slams in a row, in which case it would be tough to call.

But if you really like a Fed or Nadal or any particular player, why not just like him for his tennis, his style, for himself? Why care about the number of things he has or doesn't have? Just enjoy the tennis. :)

One real Grand Slam would be enough. And a goat should not have a 2-6 record against his main rival in majors, and should not be embarrased 1-6, 3-6, 0-6 in a major final.

Nadal has more chance to be the future GOAT than Federer. I am not saying he will, in fact I think it is very unlikely, and even less likely now as he has already missed his shot of a Grand Slam this year which might have been his best. However given his youth and record vs all his main rivals thus far, still more shot than Federer would have of reaching it at this point.

they voted no because we all know its never going to happen
Then they didn't see the first word in the question of the poll, which is "If".

Thus, *********s will NEVER acknowledge Federer being the GOAT no matter what he achieves, even if he won 100 Grand Slams. :-?
