ESPN reported that Nadal will see a specialist Monday and get a report on whether he should play Wimbledon? The consenusus is that if Nadal plays he will still be playing less than 100 percent? Should Nadal play at less that 100 percent and have the chance at reinjuring or tweaking the injury possibly making it a lot worse, or should he play it safe and take time off for a full recovery?

I think he shouldn't even attempt to play. Sure he'll probably lose the #1 spot, but I think his career longevity is at stake here. If he plays at Wimbledon, he will most likely aggravate the problem far worse than it already is.

Knees are serious items. He doesn't just have to think about this from a tennis stand point but also a stand point of later on in life. If the possibility to inhibit future mobility is a risk, then he should not play at all.

he shouldnt so that your "boy" can win the title because otherwise if nadal plays and is healthy something tells me fed isnt gonna have a chance

Yeah, just like Nadal started this tournament 'fit and healthy' like a 98% favourite.. Anything can happen, and most common fans do not want a player to not participate. I would like Rafa to be there, even though I'm a Federer fan (who At the moment, couldn't care less about Wimbledon, there's only one match that counts), but it would be even worse if Rafa's career would come to an early end because of these injuries. He needs to take good care of himself.

Federer played for months with Mono nucleus at less than 100%. Maybe Nadal should turn up if it doesn't do him any long term damage. so he may suffer some difficult defeats like Federer did but he'll just have to take it like a man until he gets better.

Sad Nadal might miss it, love watching him play at wimbledon.

I suppose if he does miss it, then it will be for the best and I'd rather he not do anymore damage to himself and preventing him from playing well in the future.

It's all about the long term view. If the medics tell him thta playing might be painful, but he won't make things worse, then he should and will play.

If they tell him there are longer term implications, then IMHO he shouldn't play.

It's quite different ofcourse. being ill, it doesn't get really worse and people don't usually retire from it (Djokovic being the exception to confirm the rule). However, a bad knee should be treated carefully and could EASILY get worse. If it doesn't, he should try to play as defending champion. It's not like he should only go when he'll be 100%. If he can play at 80% and it won't get any worse and he can make 4th round, then he should go. As a defending champion you owe that a little to the public, the tournament, but mostly to yourself. That you know you've tried.

If he makes it worse with playing, then he shouldn't play.. but if the injury stays the same, then I think he should and will want to play.

He should not play if he is injured seriously. It will end up looking like the 2007 U.S Open, and he is lucky that effort didnt ruin his career. He seems to always want to please his family, coaches, promoters, everyone. He needs to put himself first sometimes.

honestly. if I were Nadal? I wouldn't play.

sure, people will start saying that "so and so played when he wasn't a 100%" and so on, but at the end of the day, Nadal is answerable to himself when it comes to questions of his fitness. just because the world wants him to play when he's not 100% doesn't mean he is obligated to do so (unless he doesn't think straight). ultimately, doing so might make you look like Mr Fantastic/Mr Soldier-on-despite-the-pain, but your body (and yourself probably) wouldn't be thanking you should do any nasty and potentially long term/career threatening injury. remember, tennis exerts a lot of stress on the lower limbs for movement, and having a pair of injured knees is like asking David Beckham if he could deliver them sweet crosses with his left boot. just not going to happen!
