A couple of conclusions from French Open 2009

1. To all the men on tour, excluding Nadal, Federer is still the man to beat in a slam. Sure some can beat him on a master event, but on the slam stage best of 5 matches, no one (except Nadal) is really at Federer's level. Federer's game has dropped when he is under pressure. That is for sure. As he said himself, he can not play freely when the score is close. And today he said he has played 3 or 4 French open finals this week, under the tremendous pressure on him. If you follow his matches, if he lost the 1st set, the match will be a nail-biter for Federer fans. But most likely garanteed, as long as his opponent is not Nadal, Federer will prevail at the end.

2. In the final today, Federer has pretty much the whole world on his side. "Every one wants you to win this year", said by some of his opponents including Monfils and Del potro, even Nadal said himself after his loss to Soderline "if anyone deserves to win this year, I hope it is Federer". When was the last time in sports, that the match result becomes almost the focus of the whole world? It is as if Federer's win is not only for him, but for the whole man-kind. I think it is because of Federer's never-give-up fighter spirit for the French open title. He has been trying for 5 years where the first 4 trials failed by one single opponent (Nadal), after the final 2008 it seems Federer's chance of winning the title is getting more and more slim. Yet the man didn't give up, he's got his goal and he is still fighting for it, and he finally achieved it today. This touches everyone, who didn't have failures in his/her life? and who didn't cherish the success after years and years of hard work and numerous failures? It is as touching as a hollywood drama.

3. Nadal is only human, even on the red clay of Roland Garros. Nadal's future is not looking too great, at this very moment. His knee finally is taking a toll on him in a slam. No one can be sure if his knee is 100% fine would he still lose to Soderline or not. But one thing for sure is his camp really have to work out a better plan. I am not a Nadal fan but I surely wish him recover soon.

4. Soderling is not much of a weirdo. From today's match when he made sure Federerer was ok after the Jimmy Jump incident, that shows he's got enough respect for his opponent. Sure he had his problem with Nadal and such, but well, who doesn't have problems with someone when they are just 21? Remember, Soderling is only 24 now.

5. Del Potro will soon become a real threat to the "big 4". This man deserves great respect. JMDP seems to be improving his game (and more importantly his mental game) faster than Djoko and Murray.

6. Most of the goat talk is endless, and meaningless.

7. The security in French open is a joke. Had Federer pull a "Monica Seles" today, I wonder if that would become the most tragic moment of sports of all time. Seriously, not just for slams, for any ATP event these freak incidents should NOT happen. What are the securities being paid for? Sitting there like a duck and respond slower even than the match umpire?

Good observations Michael. I noticed that all of them are about the men. Is it because there are no rock-star personalities among the women? Or is it that none are that beautiful? Or is their talent so far below the men that no one cares? I don't know.

Maybe they ought to have snipers posted to take out people who run onto the court and get too close to the athletes (unless they're children).

Give them tranquilizer guns, and put them close to the court.

I was very glad that this guy was only goofing around and had no malicious intent; but you can't know that when he's running towards the player.

All of the above.

Sorry I didn't write up much for the women's matches, as there were less drama, and much less attention really put on the WTA tour, I am sorry. I, however, do feel sorry for Safina, I was root for her to win her first slam, but she failed. She does not have the heart of a great champion yet, not like her brother, who took out Sampras at the age of 19 in US open final. But Safina is still young, she has more chances to prove herself.

I watched the Wimbledon match in which Soderling and Nadal had that confrontation and agreed that Soderling was a bit of a weirdo.

However, today during his runner up speech, he seemed like a normal 25 year old guy. He told a pretty funny story about his practice yesterday and was laughing all during his interview. He seemed like a really nice guy during his interview and not anywhere close to the weirdo I wrongfully thought he was.

Overall, I think he was simply pleased with having made it to the final and knew that Federer was the better player this day. He wasn't in the least bit deflated or dejected that I could tell.

If I was federer I would have smashed my racquet ino the guys head.
Federer is smarter than that. Remember that Federer is worth tens of millions of dollars. All of that could be gone in a massive lawsuit if he seriously injured or even killed the guy.

great post ! Agree with most of the points.

Slight disagreement with (1) - i think Federer may find it difficult to get past Murray as well. I am eagerly waiting to see what transpires in their next Grand Slam meeting.

Totally agree about JDMP -- i predict he will break into the top 4 within the next 6 months, with a good shot at number 1, within a couple of years. I expect Murray/JDMP to step up with a rivalry to their own.

Great post OP, and the 7th one is so true. Anyone who comes out on court is either going to hurt no one or going to hurt Roger Federer. Even the chair umpire realized he needed to 'protect' Roger Federer. Why is security that slow. I thought it was quite funny by the way that he ran around the linesmen, and the linesmen still stood there looking at the lines.

Very Nice Job - Lines People at FO

this is really a big issue that i have forgotten about regarding security. i watched a sharapova vs. williams match at the staples center in los angeles, ca a few years ago and they had a guy say something really sexists to sharapova from the stands and (literally) within 1 minute, that guy was gone. this was just a verbal issue.

for a grand slam tournament to wait that long to respond to that guy approaching federer is very sad BUT EVEN MORE SAD was the lines people standing there. did you see how they just stood upright and put their hands behind their back? it would be nice if these lines people could also be security people as well. you have one of the best players of all time standing there needing help and all you do is stand up and put your hands behind your back...come on now?!?

The French men and women are real sissy's . The linesmen were just standing there doing nothing. I would have jumped from the stands and stopped the guy myself. This wouldnt happen in the States.
Morever the crowd in my opinion was not fair to nadal as well.
They seem to have n air of arrogance. The French Open only gained prominance because of Rogers inability to win it. Otherwise its just t the level of a Masters tournament.

Just one question, as a lot of people seem to be saying that JMDP will move into the top 4 by the end of the year.

Who will come out of the top 4 then?

If I had to pick one person, that would be Djokovic.

We are in for interesting times though. If one is to believe the news reports, Nadal is injured and may miss Wimbledon. Regardless, there are clear warning signs that his grinding style has finally caught up with him. I am not saying that he will drop out of the top 4, but if others want to make a move, then this is their best chance.

Federer has achieved most of his career goals, and it will be interesting to see if he remains as motivated to improve upon his GS legacy - with the baby on the way, I don't think he will be as driven.

JMDP/Murray seem to be the most motivated/consistent of the trio (them and Djokovic). I can see either of them winning at least one of the next 3 slams.

I think JMDP may not be able to get into the top 4 this year, but he could really beat one of the top 4 in the 2 slams remaining this year.

Agree the men's tour is now a lot more interesting. It is no longer just the routine Nada/Fed show. Del Pooter has definitely arrived. Murray and Sod could always have a peak run and win at W or USO. I look forward now to the upcoming Majors.

It is because none of them would win a single set from any of the men in the draw.

that's because they are women. :D
i know thats a giant disappointment to people like you who believe, along with professor higgins, "why cant a woman be more like a man"?

for centuries now, the women compete with the women in most sports, poor dears, and the best women win the women's sports. what could be simpler? centuries. try to comprehend it!

Not at all. I never said women should compete with men. I was just answering the question how come no one cares about WTA final. Same reason why no one cares what junior won the final. Totally different level of tennis.

A great post and I agree with everything except for #3.

I think people are too fast to bury Nadal. I remember people saying Fed should retire or Fed is done just when he lost Wimbly and the AO. The same happens with Nadal now - he losses one match and people are all over him. I think Nadal's future is looking great. He is a huge player and is still very young - he can do everything. Yes, his knees are bothering him, but they have bothered him before and he prevailed. I think Nadal will soon return to show us all just what a powerful player he really is.
