I tend to agree to that. Tennis wants him back.

But I doubt he can ever be as good as his 2008.

I agree - it's important to see him come back and recieve regular beatdowns from Federer, Djokovic, Tsonga and Verdasco.

dam, i have problems with knees too it hurts hella bad after you do some hardcore balling. I dont see him lasting through the entire hard court season.

maybe he will skip lots of tournaments

IN fact I think Rafa should really really really rest those knees through the 2012 season. 2013 should be his target year to come back 100%!

Current ATP points Nadal 9285, Murray 8260. On Aug 17 Nadal drops 800 points, Murray 10. Points: Nadal 8485, Murray 8250. With a difference of only 235 points, Murray may pass Nadal after Montreal if Nadal isn't well and gets bumped out early.

Nadal's return is in no way, shape or form essential for tennis. The game existed before him and will exist long after he retires...the same goes for any player; Federer, Roddick, etc.

Like I said tennis will essentially NEED Nadal in 2013 - so he can rest up until then. Fish, work on his tan, get married to Xisca, pick his *** some more...

I wouldn't say it's essential by any means, he's only really missed Queens and Wimbledon as it is.

This years Wimbledon was one of the most enjoyable for a long time, there were some great matches (Haas v Cilic, Ferrero v Gonzalez to name two). We also had a Brit who stood a great chance and Roddick playing as well as he ever had. Oh and the final wasn't too bad either!

When Nadal's back everyone will be talking about his knee's, time wasting, excuses after he's lost etc.. Is that essential for tennis? Not for me, thanks.

How does it feel to have 2000 posts in 2 months? Must be a pretty awesome life; sitting at your computer all day trolling TT while living vicariously through your idol Federer.

I disagree. Nadalfan has 200-something posts. How many threads could he ruin with that? FedFan seeps into every single thread.

I don't feel that either the Nadal or Federer trolls possess greater intelligence.

True, none are better than the other but in this particular case, the post count does not tell the entire story.

I think that a lot of you are missing the point that the author was trying to make: Tennis needs Nadal right now because he is the only one that can cause Fed problems.Ok,no player will ever be bigger than the sport but let's be real about,tennis for the time being still rests on the shoulders of the Fed/Nadal duo.Fortunately we have young guns like Murray,Djokovic,Del Potro,not to mention veterans like Hewitt,Roddick and so on,but in the end most people still want Nadal-Fed matches because of the rivalry.

I don't think Montreal will be that relevant.Nadal is coming off knee injury and Fed has just become a daddy.However USOpen will lose some of its shine if Rafa doesn't show up.Again,this doesn't mean that we can't have great matches.For me the best match of WB 09' was Murray-Wawrinka and neither Fed or Nadal were a part of that.
But while we get entertained on the way to the final by the lower ranked players(and I used lower ranked loosely,because top 20 are very good players),most of us want to see the interesting match-ups from quarters on.And although some guys put up a great fight(like roddick this year) the outcome most of the times is that Fed wins,at least for the past five years.And I'm not just talking about the USOpen,I'm talking about most of the tournaments he enters.While this is great for Fed and his fans,for the rest of us it's boring.Tennis needs some unpredictability.Nadal has provided that for the last 4 years(if it were not for him Fed would have about 18-19 freaking slams) while the others have failed,at least at the Slams.

That being said,I think Murray and Roddick will be Fed's problems at this USOpen,not Nadal whom we haven't seen play since may.But still,Fed is favorite by a country mile.

nadal's return would be great to see. It would be the same for anyone else in the top 10 for that matter. If i were him though, i would rest until the last hard court tournament before the US open so that he would be more fresh

I agree, but maybe he is afraid of losing his no2 spot? He sure as hell doesnt wanna be on the same half as Federer in Us Open...

Tennis needs Nadal, no doubt about that.

After Federer's gotten old, he's the one that should keep Murray and Djokovic from winning slams. :)

@Steve132,let me rephrase that:USOpen 2009 will lose SOME of its shine if Rafa doesn't enter because he is the nr.2 seed and the only proven adversary to the five times champ,Federer.He brings some unpredictability in the mix and that's good for any tournament.Sure,there are other "wildcards" for Fed like Murray,Roddick,perhaps Del Potro,but those guys haven't touched Fed at the Slams,although roddick did get close this year.

Oh,and what had Rafa achieved at AO before this year? Not much. I am not implying that he will win USOpen this year but don't count him out for the next years.
