He's achieved his career slam. He's broken Pete's record. He's married now and has kids. Tennis is becoming less important in his life and the competitive fire is gone. He may not know it but he will not like losing to people he once owned in big slam finals. He's 28 but if he doesn't win a slam next year, he will certainly hang it up. Burn out comes not from winning but from losing to players that were never a threat. When Borg lost to Brian Gottfried, he say he didn't like losing to someone who couldn't hold his tennis bag. The old Fed would have taken Delpo. He played like crap because his focus wasn't there. He done wanting. He's satiated. Discuss.

Roger's good for another two. Keep in mind that the grinders/baseliners wear out at a much younger age than SV pros.

Fed is not a S&V'er. However he may have to migrate to that strategy like Sampras evolved latter in his career. Delpo, Nadal and other receive serves so deep to see the ball better and to slow the serve, Fed has to S&V ever so often to keep them honest. He gets frustrated that he's not getting the free points on serve that he tries to serve bigger and start missing 1st serves.

this is one of his best years in his career and made the final of every grand slam not to mention losing in five sets both times he lost. i don't see him quitting soon.

We've had these predictions for each of the years Federer has dominated and a lot of crow has been eaten in the meantime. You don't understand Federer if you think this guy has any interest in winding down. This year is not over yet, but expect another stellar year from Federer next year. Probably better than this one. It's quite amazing, when you think about it, had Federer served in the usual 60% range in the Oz and USO finals, he would probably have a Calendar Grand Slam this year. This kind of ability and success does not drop off out of thin air. I think the difference between Borg and Federer is Federer is the greater talent and plays the game considerably more easily than anyone else on tour. The matches he plays are mostly on his racket, so until a comparable uber-talent comes along, I do not see anyone capable of displacing him while he is healthy and motivated.

I remember him saying a while back that he was already looking forward to the Olympics in London. That might keep the fire alive...then again, with all that he's accomplished, adding a gold medal to his resume might not be enough to keep him going another three years.

I think he still has fun out there, though, so I'd be surprised if he retires soon.

However, I also don't see him sticking around much if his ranking drops too much, but I don't think it will.

its amazing to me anyone can stay hungry as long as he has. i doubt many of us can comprehend that kind of hunger and dedication. who are we to judge him anyways. if he decideds to do it, i'd bet he could get to 20.

I think other players have been as hungry it's just that it took too much out of them to achieve less.

Give him a break. He did just have twins which, as a father of 2 little boys, can be draining and it can lead to loss of focus on anything outside of your family. He'll be back. Of course he hasn't really gone anywhere after looking at is summer. He can't win them all.

I think I agree with the sentiment. I'm a huge Fed fan but when I watched him in the post match interview he seemed... satisfied. We didn't see the disappointment of his recent loss at the Aussie Open or the prior year's French open. No tears, no long face. He won't simply retire, he'll continue to play and play very well but he's finally mortal and more and more players will feel they have a chance against him. He may very well win a few more GS titles but it's all uphill battle from here. It really is just going to depend on how hard he wants to train, if his health holds up and if he wants to continue to put up with the travel.

Obviously if the hunger was not there, he would have battled Andy so hard and saved those 2 championship points against Del Potro. He would have just rolled over on the very first one. I predict Fed wins at least 2 more slams.

I believe he has two girls but otherwise you're right. But let's not say that the OP is a complete ****** now, while I wouldn't go about saying that Roger has absolutely ZERO motivation for grand slams, you can definately see that his competitiveness and hunger has slowly deflated from the glory years of 04-07.

Should Federer retire now? Hells no, Federer is only 28, he still has atleast 2 or 3 years left of brilliant tennis and considering that he didn't even have a first serve at 50% AND still brought it to five sets, speaks of conviction and confidence in Fed's ground game. While Federer's dominance ended two years ago, It would be hard to forget Roger Federer even if his ranking dips and begins posting more early round loses.

I think Fed still has enough for two or three more grand slams and who knows, maybe he'll hit jackpot and get a gold in singles aswell.

I think Federer is as good as he ever was. I just think the top of the men's game now is at an unbeliavably high level.

I can look at Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and del Potro and think the standard of play each of them are currently producing could proabably have made them #1 when Lleyton Hewitt's or Andy Roddick's reigns at the top were in place.

That makes 4 players currently playing better than the number 1 player of the era immediately preceeding the reign of Federer. In my humble opinion.

Sorry but I'm still not convinced on Andy Murray's credentials. For me I need to see more evidence of him producing the goods on the big occasions..

I tend to think Fed is more motivated then ever. If he were feeling devastated and distraught he'd not show up to Davis Cup this week. He's going to be a force the rest of the season and in Australia.

Look, I'm a Fed fan, he's my favorite to watch. I just think that when you lay down 2-6 in the 5th, your focus is not there. He let Delpo hit too many forehands!

The fire is gone. When you have been on top in the exquisite fashion that he has been accustomed to, you don't want to lose to guys you are 6-0 with. He lost to Tsonga, Warwrinka, Djoker. It's going to come more and more. He is captive to his own success. When Henin was #1 and she started losing dramatically to people she wasn't used to losing to. Then fearing that she had to defend her French title, she quit. Burnout never comes from winning. It always comes from losing to people you used to own. Safin is in this death spiral. Remember when Sampras started to not win titles? Then he started to lose to journeymmen and the fans and press started asking him when is it time to hang it up? No #1 wants to be embarrassed out there as the embarrassment is more public and more acute. When Sampras broke Emerson's record, that was the beginning of the end for him. Same for Fed although you won't notice it now but he has reached his pinnacle. All goals have been satiated. The kiddies need his attention now. Having kids will mollify his drive. Enjoy watching him while you can because the young hungry tigers are nipping at his hind quarters. The king of the herd is entering his winter. He may eak out one more slam and then he will hang it up. If he changes his game to more attacking and less baseline play, he may survive at the top longer as his backhand will be less exposed.

The only thing that would keep the fire going would be wanting to win the Davis Cup for the Swiss or the Olympic Gold for singles. Another loss at the W or USO final, especially against Rafa, and he's definitely done.

Dude, as much as I respect what you say and all that (and as I know who you are, I know you're probably one of the best players on this board thus one of the most qualified to speak your mind), Fed ain't done. Is he done winning 3 slams a year on average? Yes. Is he close to loosing his grip on the #1 ranking? Yes. Does he have the game to hang with the tour for a few more years? Certainly. Sampras won a few slams on the wrong side of 30, who's to say Rog, who is technically in his prime (26-29 years of age is the norm) can't do the same? And he is on record saying that he wants to retire after he wins gold at the 2012 Olympics, and retire after that. Why not let him do that, the place where it all began? It started at the All-England Lawn Tennis Club, so it's going to end at the All-England Lawn Tennis Club, and Federer knows it.
