andy murray season likely over

With a serious left wrist injury, it looks like andy m. season may be over. this continues the poor luck with wrist problems which also ruined his 2007 season(right wrist). With continual physical problems, it is unlikely andy m. will win a major in 2010.

No, following his amazing rise to no. 2 in the rankings it;s suddenly all looking a bit grim for Andy (and another major wrist injury = big problems)... and I can imagine seeing del po winning the US would have hurt. Just goes to show how the fortunes of some top players can fluctuate so.

And Murray revealed he may need a break, saying: "I need to take some time off and let it try and recover.

"I can't make it worse every single day and then by Sunday be struggling."

The world number three added: "I don't want to sacrifice the lot to play in the tie and end up hurting myself so badly that I can't play for a few months.

"Every time I play on it, it's making it worse. You never know how much damage you can do to yourself, you just hope it doesn't get so bad you can't play"

"Four or five days [rest] isn't enough."

In summary, the left wrist is bothering him so he won't play DC dubs today. Still expects to play tomorrow, then he'll see a sepcialist in London on Monday - the same guy that fixed his right wrist.

I'm with batz. Ross, nah, just wordplay on the OP's name...and the fact that 2010 is a long way away and it is wayy too early to count anyone out of contention (especially a proven contender like the Muzzer).

I do think it's spin...to get him some slack for likely skipping Davis Cup.

I also think (and this might just be me) that mentally/emotionally, it benefits guys to pause their season in some ways after the US Open. Especially a disappointing one. If you've already qualied for the year-end ATP championships, the indoor season is meaningless.

I see Team Muz giving him 3-6 weeks off, training him good and hard, then he plays a few indoor events, and builds steam for London.

Just like how Djokovic was one match away from the number two ranking last year, then suddenly dropped very swiftly back into the 3/4 role without ever really challenging the top 2 spots since.

Though with Federer's decline coming soon and Nadal's injury problems both of those two and several others could very realistically battle for those spots soon.

I'd be surprised to see him before Valencia, even that might be a stretch. I doubt he'll play London if he hasn't at least played Valencia/Paris. Which is a shame, as it's nearly a complete sell out - 240000 tickets sold!

The 'season likely over' statement would seem to be stretching things. He's still down to play DC singles tomorrow.

Then he sees a specialist Monday. INteresting situation. I wish him well.

Tenuous situation. For Londoners I mean. They lost out on a Michael Jackson tour. They WILL get the Muzzer.

Spot on with the Djokovic comparison.

Yeah, you've got to fear for Rafa with his way of playing and his history.

And as someone pointed out to me recently re Fed's slight diminishing of powers, you can't help but wonder on the effects of fatherhood (and I mean psychologically and in the deeper sense more than physically) ...

Its weird when you think about it, Murray and Nadal are probably the 2 fittest (with Fed) players in the top 10, they still are the most injured! Change of style of play, maybe?

I think it has to do with over-training,both of these players train long and hard. I can understand Rafa having problems because he chases every ball like it's match point but that is not the case with Murray. Andy hits with moderate pace and energy consumption, unlike Nadal who puts everything he has into every shot, and only chooses to go for broke when he has a big opening. And although Murray has started to retrieve more balls he doesn't run around like Nadal.

Murray only pushes himself as hard as he needs to in order to gain victory so I don't think his style is as brutal as Nadal's. This wrist injury is probably bad luck, just like Rafa's abdominal problem.

Yeah, thats a good analyzis. Murray might be over-trained and Nadal needs to find another way to get through his matches or i think he will retire before 2011-2012

Poor Andy :-(

I hope he'll be healthy for the rest of the season. I want him to win the next slam (after Fed of course).

Murray said that he doesn`t have trouble serving and playing with his forehand but on the backhand he is hurting.Obviously he doesn`t need to play his best tennis to beat low ranked polish players but playing with injury even if it would guarantee him 2 points isn`t worth it.Pretty much every time Murray plays it`s 3-2 for the opponents.Until a decent player comes to get a point here and there it doesn`t make any sense for Murray to play Davis Cup.The way things are going for the british tennis it wouldn`t surprise me to see them playing in 1 or 2 years against the mighty forces of Armenia,Ghana or Cameroon.

It was a different wrist and he suffered sudden trauma too it. This time it's tendinitis in his left wrist. Not great, but not comparable to his right wrist injury from 07. For a start, he'll still be able to practice everything except his 2HBH.
