MELBOURNE, Australia -- Justine Henin has been granted a wild card entry to the Australian Open in what she is targeting as her comeback to Grand Slam tennis.

Henin, who won the 2004 Australian Open among her seven major singles titles, announced last month she was returning to the women's tour after more than a year in retirement.

The Australian Open has up to 12 wild cards to issue in each of the men's and women's 128-player draws.

Henin will not have a protected ranking when she returns to the tour and so will need to get wild card entries or enter qualifying to get places in the main draw. She announced her comeback soon after fellow Belgian Kim Clijsters won the U.S. Open, only three tournaments into her own comeback from retirement.

That's awesome. I can't wait to see her in action. She was the only female player (besides Golovin, because of other obvious reasons) I liked to watch.

Nice!

Would love to see a Justine-vs-Kim final after the Belgians vs William Sisters Semis.

I have a feeling that Serena might get suspended for her outburst at the US Open.

What tournament wouldn't give her a Wild Card entry?

Unless she isn't getting any wins... I don't see how she wouldn't.

Can't wait to see her knockout someone like Jankovic in the 2nd round.

I doubt Serena will get suspended. As much as I disagree with her outburst, the love her/ hate her attitude people have towards her is a marketing dream. She generates too much revenue for the WTA to suspend her.

lmao yep
i would hate it if i was one of the higher seeded players and an ex-#1 wildcarder comes in and smashed me in one of the early rounds due to the draw

Its really good news and I hope the time will go fast to reach the Australian Open...
I would give also wildcards to Monica Seles,Martina Hingis,Jenniffer Capriati and Martina Navratilova (she was playing double mixed matches not long ago)...

Justine-Jelena match would be interesting.

On the one hand, Jelena has never defeated Justine. On the other hand, on the last few matchups, Jelena was on the verge of defeating Justine and missed by a hair.

Now that neither is in their prime shape, it would be really interesting how they would play each other.

I would also want to see her match with Dinara Safina in which she would win 12 love games in a row...

2010 could be a great year for women's tennis!
The Williamses, the Belgians and hopefully Sharapova again.
:)
I hope that the Williamses will calm down their Al Capone's moods because if they behave like Serena they should be disqualified...

1 of Clijsters, Henin, or Serena will win the Australian Open. I gaurantee it.

Of course they got a good chance of winning it, but nothing is guarantee.

I'll save this post for you just in case someone wants to bump this thread up next year.

the bad news is, for american tv viewers, espn2 is probably going to show mostly the williams sisters matches and we won't get to see any of justine henin matches unless she goes deep into the draw.

Henin was nowhere near her best when the two played. She would have Safina for breakfast if they meet next year.

Why does everyone believe Henin will be at her best when she comes back? She'll definitely be a top 10 player, but no way will she dominate the tour like she did in 07.

Who believed that Clijsters would win the USO and beat not one, but both of the WS during the course?

Yeah just like your predictions on the Clijsters comeback were so accurate. I would say stick to mens tennis, except that you know squat about that as well. :)

never say never.

if justine is motivated enough, it is possible. She is still not too far physically from her prime.
this break from tennis if anything probably might reinvigorate her.

She will be fresh mentally and physically.
