List of short ATP Tennis players

If top 100 is high (which it clearly is), you got the Rochus brothers, Santoro (retired I guess), Phau...

I think Olivier Rochus is the shortest of them all, being 1.68 meters tall. (5'6")

Way shorter than Ferrer (1.75 meters or 5'9") or Kolja (1.77 meters or 5'10")

under 6 feet and top 100
Personally, I wouldn't call 5'10 and 5'11 short, even for a pro tennis player. There are lots of pros that tall/ short. The other issue here is that most short tennis players lie about their height. Like Davydenko says he is 5'10 (I think) and I've stood next to him - he is not 5'10"....

How about some previous world #1 Lleyton Hewitt? I dunno how tall he is, but I highly doubt he is 6 ft or taller.

Not even close. Chang is 5'8 or 5'9 I think. Rochus is the shortest guy in the top 100 that I can think of. He stands at 5'6.

It's rumored that Rochus might even be shorter than his official listing.
Yeah, actually almost all of them are. Hewitt was listed as 5'-11" but he's not either. It's very interesting to see these guys in person if you have the chance. The TV evens everyone out - I remember being very surprised at how tall and massive Berdych actually is.

That would be an interesting thread too - which players appear different on tv vs. in person...

Seen a few athletes in my day, and they are always shorter in 'real life' than listed in media print. For example, saw Isaiah Thomas (basketball) and he used to be listed at 6'1", but really he was like 5'10"/5'11".

Dunno if you all mind, but Marcelo Rios is listed as 5'9" and I've stood next to him. His listed height is correct.

Haven't heard of somebody shorter than O. Rochus in the Top 100, not now or ever, for that matter.

He's shorter than my girlfriend! :D

I've stood next to plenty of pros and heights are mostly all legit.

This Guazelli guy seems to think Marat is over 6'4'', he's no more than 6'4''.5

Just cause you're not actually 6'4'' doesn't mean he's taller than 6'4''.

I haven't seen him live, so I'm basing it on what HE has said out loud. He has said several times he's actually 196/197 cm, which is a tad over 6'5''. I cannot say if it is true, because I have never stood next to him.

As for the argie guys, I've stood next to pretty much all of them. Half of them are not as tall as listed. And the other half is.

And this is me, November 2007, with 6'1' Sergio Goycochea, former Argentina's national team goalkeeper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergio_Goycochea)

Safin has never said he's 196/197cm, he's said that he was measured when he was 17 and he may be taller.

Look at photos of him next to Ljubicic and Berdych from the 2005 Paris final, photos of him next to J. Johansson and Del Potro. He's definitely not over 6'4.5

He does look huge in person, he looks more than 6'4'' if you were to see him just walking not so close to anybody, if i didn't know his height I'd probably go for over 6'5'' but i'd be wrong.

Do you guys think short people have to put more effort into training so they can compete with the top players?

It is definitely more difficult for shorter people to compete at the high levels of tennis, but I think training is training. I'm - well, not tall - and don't train any more or less than someone taller than me, but I know that when I go to net, if I don't end the point with that shot, chances are VERY GOOD that he will end it with his next one.

OTOH, I just LOVE to play against very tall guys, 'cuz it's such a GOOD FEELING when I beat 'em!

(a 4 - 4.5 :) )

Well maybe the listed height of these players include their height with shoes (which add about an inch to and inch and a half). NBA heights are ALL listed with shoes on (for example, MJ is listed as 6'6" but was measured by the NBA as a little bit less than 6'5" without shoes).

Solomon seemed closer to Chang's height, around 5'7".
AlbertoBarasetechi might be the real shortest, at what BudCollins called a real 5'4".
Shortest top 100 Womens? My vote for AmadaCoetzer.

O.Rochus constistently beat up badly Fed in junior tours when they were of average height. We knew how this ended up-with also Fed saying :I don't get beaten by dwarfs

Not saying that height was the only factor of course, but it's not a coinsidence that the average height of the top 10 is what,1.85? :)

One more reason to appreciate Olie.

When I first started watching tennis I thaught Federer was quite small (like 5'9) and that Nadal was a good bit taller. Federer is actually a bit taller than Nadal. You're right, I think it's a combination of the T.V and the clothes the different players wear; probably the shorts and maybe even socks.

The rule is Male athletes lie upward on ht and wt. Size intimidates.
Female athletes lie downward in wt. Serena at one time claimed she was 135...
Most tennis pros are no different. I stood taller, next to Rosewall who was supposed to be shorter than Laver. Laver is listed at 5'9". I am 5'7". Connors looks maybe 5' 7", in his Laver match they are same height almost.

Who was the shortest guy ever? Chang?
Chang is about 10 cm taller than the shortest guys, not even close.

Two Jewish players, Dudi Sela and the Schwartz (who is playing great recently) are two recent players who are much shorter than the rest.

This guy too, but he's retired probably.

I wonder if schwarzmanns listed height is correct. He is listed at 5'7 but he looks even shorter when standing next to other players.

Short guys always wear heels when doing a weigh-in.

Or they cheat by tippy-toe.

Fact is that we tend to believe the shorter guys are much shorter because of guys like Isner.
