Nike Hates Serena Williams

Yep, Nike hates Serena. That is the only conceivable explanation for her current outfit at the Medibank Sydney tournament. Here is the front:

Here's the closest thing I could find to a back view:

The bottom of the outfit in the back, from the waist down, is very close to Serena's skin color.

I have to hand it to Serena. She has clearly lost weight and looks very fit. Trouble is, Nike has put her in an outfit where it looks (from a distance) as though she is playing Bottomless Tennis and is naked from the waist down.

As a woman, I thought the rules were clear and well-established. You don't wear fitted, flesh-colored clothing because it makes you look like you forgot to get dressed. I learned this lesson myself as a teen when I went off and bought my first swimsuit without the aid of my mother. I returned with a flesh-colored number and my mom explained that I would likely get arrested for streaking if I ever left the house in that swimsuit.

It's a shame. It's a flattering outfit on Serena otherwise. Is there any chance that no one at Nike thought about this problem?

Cindy, are you looking at the same picture I am? Her skin color and her skirt color are two very different colors, IMO.

There’s nothing wrong with the outfit(except she IS overweight). I see plenty of outfit that looks worse in the WTA.

My only comment is that if someone thinks she looks "in shape" in that outfit, our definition of healthy in this day and age is incredibly skewed.

I would be surprised if Serena does not choose and even design her own outifts... both her and her sister have worn some pretty less than appealing attire over the years.

I have also noticed over the years that there are some overweight women that actually believe that something tight on them makes them look better. This is not a shot being fired at women... but I don't remember the same being true about men... men tend to hide under something loose and baggy.

And I don't think Nike hates Serena... I am a member of that club and they are not on the list.

I have nothing against her. If she likes what nike gives her to wear then let her be. And for those who's making fun of her being over weight, how many overweight women have had as much success as she has? I give her props. Her attitude is a different story

I'm sure Serena gets a say in what she wants to wear though,
she usually wears something that is not flattering on her anyway,
so nothing new

As far as I can remember, part of Serena's deal with Nike was that she designed or had a significant say in her clothes. When she wore the hideous white diaper outfit in Miami a few years back she was quoted many times talking about her designs and Tennis-x.com had many comments about it back then. It's possible Nike has taken away some of that control because she designed so many horrid outfits, but I think she is very involved in what she wears.

Dang, does this have to turn into an "I hate Serena" thread? We've had enough of those, eh?

Fee, you might be right. Maybe she did design it. From what I have seen, she is not an especially talented designer.

The problem with the outfit -- and you really need to catch the back view on TV to appreciate it fully -- is that the front of the skirt is red, but the back is brown or purple or whatever it is.

So it looks exactly like she went to the bathroom and accidentally tucked her skirt into her compression shorts, and nobody has bothered to tell her. I don't think Nike will be selling many of those outfits.

So youre telling me Serena is not in shape or healthy? Shes a world class tennis player and is in better shape than you and me combined. Not to mention she would murder us in tennis. I wish I could be as out of shape as her, if thats what youre implying. That hate on her gets ridiculous at times.

I don't think many of Serena's outfits have sold well lately. My sister says that they are all just a little to one-sided. By that, she means that they aren't versatile enough that you could see any woman other than Serena wearing them.

''In Shape'' Is that a magazine? What is 'in shape'? What does it mean?

She is not thin.
She is strong.

She is not light.
But she is quick and agile.

She looks nothing like a marathon runner who is 'in shape' -- a different kind of shape (no thanks).

She is currently (kind of sadly) the top player in women's tennis today.

I agree with you if you are saying her body type will not age well, or that she could have some health concerns in her 50s and 60s.
But for right now, I think she is pretty strong, quick, agile and .... if she had a cuter face, I think she'd be found attractive by many. If she had a personality like Clijsters or the Wozzer ... even more?

Now, if you want to talk about the definition of 'in shape', I think it's a long discussion....and your point could be taken to the extreme either way (from dangerously razor-thin models to the average chubby sophomore at the cafeteria who stopped playing sports and has discovered beer and entertanment websites...to the average American female grocery clerk).

I think she is most definitely in shape. She is just built very muscular. I know plenty of skinny people who are not in shape. Ask them to run a mile and they cramp. In shape to me has more to do with stamina and endurance compared to body fat. There are tons of over weight people that are in shape.

I am not saying that she is over weight at all, Serena has a thick body build. and is in great shape.

when Serna finally retires from tennis...she is going to blow up.

She is teetering now... I always wondered how two sisters could look so different... I guess one takes after dad and the other after mom. I wonder if Serena actually pictures herself looking like her mother someday when she reaches for yet another donut.

Serena’s body is not an ideal curve that look good in any outfit. She’s not in shape to be a model, but she’s in shape to be a tennis player. Sharapova is in shape to be a tennis player AND in shape to be a model. That’s why she gets $70 million contract for being in shape but not Serena. Ha ha.

I think part of it is genetics... but you can sculpt the body... if you are willing to do the work and practice a strict regimented diet. My significant other is a prime example of this... her genes are not kind to her but she works extremely hard to maintain her body shape (and has become a marathon runner and is now into circuit training as well). The hardest thing for her is diet... and it is hard to live with someone that can eat whatever they want, whenever they want... and still be in relatively good shape. Well at least look like it on the outside... who knows how bad things are on the inside.

the fact that serena is playing when she wants and winning majors while being a bit over weight is due to either her having so much talent that she can over come her weight or the quality of the other women is so poor. IMO a bit of both. imagine how she would dominate if she were in better physical shape?

He told you. And I'm seconding him. She's carrying more fat than a 'world class athlete' should. Look at Dementieva - she's in shape.

...and is in better shape than you and me combined.
Early leader for the 'idiotic statement of the month' competition. How would you know? There could be people on this board who work out a lot more than they play tennis. My body fat is between 9 and 10% - her's is not - look at the picture.

Not to mention she would murder us in tennis.
No one said anything about her ability to hit the ball. And most of us probably didn't have nearly the amount of world class instruction she received. Try to stay on topic. And don't be so thin-skinned.

Fee pretty much knocked this one out of the park. Serena has input. Ergo Nike is off the hook.

Dear All,

Trust me, Serena decides what she would like to wear and works with Nike to create the product. The color does not look anything like her skin so whoever saying this must be a bit color blind. Top athletes at Nike does not have to wear anything that they don't want to as they work close to everyone at Nike for all of their outfits. Period.

Oh I get it, youre a fitness expert. You know how much body fat she has? Give me a percentage fitness guru. Yup, you cant. Youre also not a world class athlete, so how do you know how much fat one should carry? Nope, you dont know that either. Seems like she does just fine against her more "in shape" opponents. If youre in better shape than Serena and it makes you feel good about yourself to call a much more successful person than you fat when they arent, thats cool. Clown.

How many times will idiots keep posting on the body image of Serena, James Blake, and Monfils?

Yes, they are Black, meaning they are built differently. Our women have thighs and large buttocks. Our men have big butts, wide shoulders, and extremely powerful legs. What is the issue?

Do we need a thread every other month pointing out the obvious?

Theres nothing wrong with Blake or Monfils bodies, actually I believe most people would like to have their physiques.

We have had threads with Blake and Monfils being compared to monkeys because of their faces and butts in the past.

She's in great shape. She looks phenomenal. Nothing like she looked in the early 2000's, but still pretty damn good. A few years back she was overweight. Not anymore.

Curiously, what is your definition of healthy?

Wow, I would love Nike to hate me and pay me millions to wear their crappy stuff. I certainly won't mind. Haha.

Lol...funny how you assume the people who post the threads are white.

The OP, by the way, was posting about Serena's *outfit*, not Serena.

Has it ever crossed your mind that she's just ugly ? or Has it ever crossed your mind that she never had ANY fashion sense or color coordination abilities EVER ? Nike is probably wrming upto her advice all the time providing her hideous dresses - it's probably her request - NOT nike's . Whatever the case - even god will have problem Serena look good , ( I'm a colored guy so spare me the criticism ) - I'm all for the booty - even to me Serena looks kinda robotic & un-appealing , I cheer for her as a player but GOD help me - I have 3-HD match-videos of her & even her most prominent feature ( her trunk ) is full of stretch marks & is just a plain nightmare for a guy. So please don't blame it on Nike.
