if I'm not mistaken, the finishing tape on his overgrip says "head." does his gamma sponsorship not take overgrip into account?

Young uses the PT57A with the Youtek Radical PJ.
I have held many of his rackets many times...
Head shaped grip, too...

What strings does he play with?
PT57A already has quite a dampening/flexy yet solid feel to it. With a big worm dampener like that, must feel like a noodle lol. Unless he has poly on mains.

They're both "the blue one". One is the European version (630) and the other not (280). Like the difference between English and Metric.

I believe he said 260...whichis a different stick
Thanks for letting me know something I knew for a loooonngg time...

BTW, what does "280" have to do with the English system? (I know the answer, do you?) "630" is the metric equivalent of 98 sq. in.

It's more than likely a PT57A, as he used one when he had the MicroGEL Radical PJ (I held it a few times), and he would not have switched.

The Pro Tour was launched in 1993/94 as part of the Trisys line. In Trisys numbers, the Prestige Tour was 300, Pro Tour was 280, Radical Tour was 260, Lite Tour was 240... In answer to your question, the 280 in the "Pro Tour 280" is its Trisys number.

Now, do I win a prize?

I did not ask you, showoff!

Anyway, thanks for clarifying that for LPShanet...

What do these codes mean? For the average fan we have no clue what racquet you guys are talking about.

Discussed (TOO) many times...search button is your friend...
The PT57A is the Pro Stock version racket, old PT630 mold. It is made of graphite, no Chinese cheap junk materials put in today's retail sticks.
Therefore, the feel, sound, control, elbow/arm duration, power with these rackets are much different than the retail sticks. The PT57x are made in Austria (still) and available only to the top Pros, from Head. THerefore, they are rare and expensive.

Another nice thing about these is that they come LIGHTER than the retail sticks so there is plenty of room for customization.

These rackets will most likely not improve your game (by much) but may solve some of the issues for you (fixed my shoulder pain), while creating other issues (dried up my wallet)...

Oops...didn't notice he said "260". My bad if so. I'm well aware that you seem versed in the pro stock info...just trying to help the OP and others with additional info.

This isn't a contest, it's a board helping others with info. I didn't need the clarification, but appreciate that more info got put on the thread for others. And yes, I am aware of the lineup. Thanks for picking up my slack Racquetcraft. Coming to NY any time soon? Hope all is well with you!

BTW, dr325i, I'm sure Racquetcraft will vouch that I'm not clueless on the racquet info...I'm just trying to help posters by providing knowledge in the simplest way possible. To that end, I'll add some more: The numbers referenced (280, etc.) were introduced with the Trisys system, and were meant to reflect swing style. At the time of the introduction, they ranged from 150 (for the game improvement Discovery) to Trisys 300 (a.k.a. the Prestige Tour). Lower numbers indicated a shorter, slower more compact swing, and higher numbers were intended for those with faster, longer swings. Hope this helps.

Let me go on record by saying that this board is lucky to have OP's as knowledgeable and with the experience of LPShanet (and VSBabolat). Trust me its not only OP's who work in the industry that have credibility who post on this board. Granted, there is a pile of bad info that gets posted on this board and you can build a city with the amount of bull that gets tossed. Thankfully there are guys like LP and VS that bring some sense. So, my 2-cents is try to be friendly and encourage them to visit more often rather than scare them off with with the bull.
LP, will be back for the USOpen as usual. Sorry we didn't hook up last year but the down-under called. I'll shout out to you offline.

cheers,

A few years ago, Young was asked about which Head frame he uses. His response was "The old blue one", i.e a PT260.

It's a bit surprising that he's be playing a PT57 in the current cosmetic. Those bats are not generally available unless you are ranked in the ATP top 100, which is not the case for Donald. Even then, Head would prefer its players to move toward the TGK's. Perhaps he bought his bats on the TT classified section or **** (LOL).

There appears to be more PT57's floating around in the aftermarket sales channel than there are of players still eligible to get and use them on tour!

Hi, great thread by the way.

As you mentioned, it isn't set in stone with top 100 ATP Head players getting PT57's etc...from Head Austria. But it does help Head to reduce demands from players for "old" frames. It is only the type of player like Donald Young(still relatively young and american) that Head would like to keep in the team so they are happy to pj his racquets.
Obviously they believe in his potential and for the US market he is still interesting with a Radical PJ. That may change if he doesn't break through in the next couple of years.

Don't forget that Donald used the PT57A through out his junior career.....

To clarify your question -- I doubt he bought them on ...
Bosworth has about 20 hairpins in Donald's box (all YT Radical Paintjob), not customized yet. THe one I held in my hand was strung and had a Head-shaped grip/pallet on it. It did not have all the customization done to it, so I cannot guess his actual setup. He has a contract from Head and they supplied the sticks (still).

On the other hand, the other box had tons of the PT57A sticks for Grosjean, but with the MG Radical PJ. He's not sponsored any more, but he keeps his collection since it looks like he's trying to squeeze another season from himself...

interesting on Grosjean, hope he can get one more year!
PT 57A was a great frame (you obviously like them still!) and some habits are hard to break....

Yes, looks like Sebastian played this year's AO -- no one expected that from him...
Yes, the PT57A is one of a kind, I love it because of its softness, all of my shoulder problems are gone and because of the easiness to customize it to my liking -- I like a solid (not hollow) frame, like Prestige, bul less HL. Trying to customize retail stick for that brings the static weight too high.

Many Pros still stick with the PT57A, some with E... I doubt it will go away as the TGK lacks that soft feel...

Yes, a great frame! Classic! I played them for 9 years, with VS Gut they were awesome. I unfortunately switched racquet companies when I switched countries. also got older so I needed the hollow frame, lightness and swing speed that I lost with age.

Sigh...now there is no going back...

In case I'm not the only one unfamiliar with these things: Why does Head have a preference what its players use under the paint jobs?

LOL Good call CollegeBound I was not going to say anything but since you brought it up, that exact sentence was used by E Gulbis when asked what he's using...I doubt that both would say the same thing...:)

As RacquetCraft touched upon there is a problem on TalkTennis that a lot of folks here simply repeat what they heard and pass it on as a fact as if they are the one with experience/knowledge...

This creates this "Broken Telephone" effect(is that how you call this kids game here in US too where one whispers a fraze or a sentence to the other in line and by the time it reaches the last guy in line the sentence is totally different)

There are very few here that work/worked in the industry and probably those are the only "horses mouths" that I listen. All other is a repeat and it might or might not be wrong...

Leave it to Fedace to buzzkill a good thread. Trying to take your comments in the context of dry humor but....it ain't working. Some comments are better left running around in our heads and just as good that they don't exit verbally or in any physical form....posts included.

On a serious note. Thanks to all the posters for clarifying. I've read many comments on the pro stock frames being produced in Austria but what is the major difference. Is it just that the pro molds are 100% graphite and use the same mold as the retail versions? Also, what is the graphite in the retail versions being diluted with? D30 ??
