What Federer has achieved in just one tournament

My traditional thread after Fed wins a slam is back.

- won his 16th slam
- tied the record for 4 AOs won
- made his 23rd consecutive slam semi final
- won his first ever slam as a father
- won his 9th slam on hard courts
- beat 3 top 10 players in a row, losing only one set in the process
- served two bagles in the tourney (surprisingly both in the matches he also lost sets in)
- Gained some atp ranking points which should keep him safe at the top for the time being
- improved his career H2H against Andy Murray to 5-6, however he's on a 3-0 streak against Murray not to mention 2-0 in slams. Murray has yet to win a set against Roger in a slam.
- First title of 2010

You guys added:

-Only player to win on a slam on (Decoturf, grass, clay, plexicushion and Rebound ace) - All-rounder
-Has won a slam at least once for 8 years - DarthFed
-currently a slam holder on all 3 surfaces - icedevil0289

Feel free to add your own :)

Now that I think about it, maybe Fed wanted to punish Igor and Nikolay for taking sets off him, so he Fed them some bagles.

That's awesome. In the process, he beat the hottest player in the game and also the most talented.

Hey Agassifan, I was interested in reading some of your post-match comments and couldn't find any. I remember you were not very positive about Fed's chances against Murray before the match.

Nah, it's not, just felt like calling you that. A one time thing don't worry ;-)

And point well taken - bagels it is.

lol, i'm not worried. I quite like it. it's similar to how people somewhat gave me a nickname by adding y to my real name. instead of usha, a lot of people call me ushy pronouced as sushi of course.

For the immediate future, this one is important, too. It proves that he's not winning Slams against clown competition; one of the major criticisms of his Slam wins last year was that he didn't play anyone in the top four. After his destruction of the hottest player in the past 3 months (Davydenko) and the hottest player of the tournament (Murray), I think even the most ardent critics are finally silenced.

Federer played the most matches against top 6 players in 2009 and also had the best record, therefore the critics are wrong. I think I made a thread about it back then.

yup. Not to mention he is currently a slam holder on all 3 surfaces.

Right, though I don't see him winning another FO this year. Last year it was nearly mission impossible even without Nadal in the picture. If Fed will lose early in a slam this year, it'll probably be the FO.

But there was a lot more pressure last year, he said nadal being out ADDED to that right?

that's true, but for now he is. come FO that might change.

and @darthfed, yeah he did say with nadal out he felt the pressure or something like that

Maybe, but you could see he's not having an easy time out there with his game. He was pushed by guys like Acasuso and Paul Henry who he should own, and he was facing a virtual match point by Tommy Haas, not to mention a tough 5-setter against Delpo in the semis. I still can't believe he actually managed to win the thing at the end.

I still can't believe all of us managed to survive all that and we weren't all bed ridden in the hospital after multiple heart attacks. Well in the end he did win it and imo the hard road to the final made the win all the more enjoyable.

After Nadal went out, Federer said he had to mentally approach each of the four remaining matches(Haas, Monfils, Del Potro and Soderling) like they were slam finals.

Yeah, those were two tough weeks for Fed fans, and Fed had no mercy on any of us. I remember that break point against Haas in the 3rd, I thought Fed was done at that point, and suddenly he comes up with this sick inside out forehand that told the tale afterwards. I think his title win was based on that one tiny shot.

yeah but definitely two weeks I'll never forget. Will definitely never forget that winning moment, where he looked so happy, tears in his eyes for finally winning the one slam that eluded him and ofcourse the rain as well.

The winning moment was great, but Fed had to test our hearts once more just a month or so later when he was down a set and 2-6 in the TB against Roddick at Wimbly. Sometimes I get the feeling Fed likes to do it to his fans just to toy with us the way he sometimes does with his opponents. The Federer "hearthouse".

Anyway, off to bed, good night everyone (or day, depends on where you are).

well if fed had lost wimbly, it wouldn't have mattered much anyways imo. I would have been happy for roddick. But FO for me was like once in a life time, do or die situation. good night.

Basically ensured he will break Sampras's weeks at #1 by this summer. No way he is losing the #1 ranking until atleast Wimbledon now (not that I think he is going to lose it at any point this year).

According to shadows the top10 will look like this come Monday:

1 Federer 11350
2 Djokovic 8310
3 Murray 7800
4 Nadal 7670
5 Del Potro 6400
6 Davydenko 5290
7 Roddick 4150
8 Soderling 3375
9 Tsonga 3235
10 Cilic 2970

Fed will drop the following points between Monday and July 5:

1. 360 points at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Indian Wells, drop date 22.03.2010 (semifinals)

2. 360 points at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Miami, drop date 05.04.2010 (semifinals)

3. 90 points at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Monte Carlo, drop date 19.04.2010 (R16)

4. 360 points at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Rome, drop date 03.05.2010 (semifinals)

5. 1000 points at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Madrid, drop date 17.05.2010
(winner)

6. 2000 points at 25.05.2009 Roland Garros, drop date 07.06.2010 (winner)

7. 2000 points at Wimbledon, drop date 05.07.2010 (winner)

In total 6170 points to defend.

If we look at the pack of brats in pursuit (points to defend for the top5 from Monday + Davy):

Djokovic: 3940
Murray: 4070
Nadal: 4760
Del Potro: 2050
Davydenko: 910 (!)

With a 3040 point lead come Monday, and the fact that 4000 of the 6170 points are from slams, Fed should have a real shot at this. Anything could happen though.

Nadal have a lot of points to defend this spring, Del Potro has some convincing to do (has had since Us Open really), Murray and Djokovic will fight hard for no 2 (no 1 even) and Davydenko could possibly interfere with the top 5 if he plays well (he has been a beast in best out of 3 tournaments lately).

Good thread, thanks P_Agony!

You're welcome :)

So basically, let's say Fed losses in the RG semis, and wins Wimbldeon. In that case, all he has to do is keep being consistent in the Masters events, no?
