Show Us Your Dresses!

I'm so excited! I now own a tennis dress.

I got this little number here at TW for -- wait for it -- $15. It's a Yonex from the 2007 US Open series, and they just happened to have one in my size.

I wore it yesterday at practice because I've never worn a dress before. It felt OK, except for one thing. I got a whole lot more sunshine up my skirt when the wind blew than I am used to.

The other cool thing was that there were four guys playing on the court next to us. They were maybe 3.0s. As they were leaving, one of them asked me: "Are you an instructor?" Ha! Must have been the dress! :)

Anyway, I ordered pretty much every dress TW stocks that looked like it might look good on me, and I learned a few things.

First, dresses by Tail are very loose and not as fitted as I would like. They kind of hang straight down from the upper back to the butt and come off looking a bit boxy on me.

TWPEPED-1.jpg

Second, I was very disappointed in a Reebok dress because the picture made it look like it had little mesh cut-outs on the back. In fact, they are rubbery appliques that made me look a bit reptilian:

RWSURD-PK-1.jpg

I am still on the fence about this Yonex dress. It is very cute, but I wonder if it is a bit juvenile for someone who is my age:

[see next post for a pic of the blue dress]

Anyway, I think I may start moving toward dresses. They are very cute and fun, and there are no issues with weird-fitting skorts.

One gripe I have, however, is about the shelf bras. The blue Yonex, for instance, arrived with a shelf bra with cups, and the cups were all bent up. If someone came up with a dress with a removable shelf bra, I'd be a fan for life.

Here's the blue Yonnex:

Also, I tried this blue Nike, but it fit very tight in the abdomen and looked a bit too youthful:

You wear bike shorts underneath, and you jam the ball between thigh and bike shorts. Same as when you use a skort.

Show us you WEARING the dresses!

I have no clue about tennis dresses - but on a woman with the right figure they sure do look very nice on the court  .......... :p

My GF uses dresses from Nike on occasion, and some of the guys at the club stare a bit too much for my taste, when she plays in them

But I'm no better - I only wish there would be more women (not girls, but women) playing tennis in my club.

They are nice to look at, they create good atmosphere around the club - and if they wear nice tennis dresses - there is one more good reason to come to the tennis club more often to play.

As it is now, the courts are empty more often than not - tennis is not very popular among women (and to some extent neither among men) in my country at the moment

Hmmm. Men seem more interested in tennis dresses than women. Hmmmm. :)

Only if there is no food or beer.

I love mixed doubles, you get to hang around, BS, drink beer, and eat all kinds of great munchies, and sometimes play tennis.

I don't even have to be on the team, it is great just going to the practices and being the mascot.

It is hard to jam the ball in place and sometime it just falls during play. I always wear a ball holder at my back.

I can't wear a dress. :(

Regarding wearing a dress, have you tried? I was surprised to see the variety in how various styles and manufacturers' dresses fit.

Regarding jamming the ball in place, I guess that could be a problem if you have very thin thighs. More likely the problem is with skorts, which IMHO often have miserable compression shorts.

I do very well with the Bolle compression shorts they sell here at TW for $18. They last a long time, don't ride up, and I can put 3-4 balls under on one leg during practice sessions. It's not a good look, but they do stay up there.

Tina, that dress is really cute. What is the fit like (which is a gentle way of my asking "What shape are you?")? :)

I have this one coming tomorrow:

And I ordered this, which is on sale. It's a Yonnex and those fit me really well, so I have high hopes:

And I am trying something from DUC for the first time:

I like this one, simple and practical.
I tried to jam balls in the skort and it didn't work well (I might need to practice more as I don't have thin thigh problems. However, I don't think it looks good with bumps on the thighs. That thought prevent me from trying though I do love dresses.). So I don't dare to try dresses. Do dresses come without compression usually?

Cindysphinx

G.O.A.T.
No, you definitely have to buy separate compression skorts. They do come with those useless shelf bras.

Any bike short will work, so if you have one already you're good to go. The biggest challenge is finding one that doesn't ride up. I bought an Under Armour pair once and it felt like I was wearing an oversize thong. Yeouch.

And no, it doesn't look good with the bumps on the thigh, but I am hoping my startling natural beauty will distract my many admirers. :)

Seriously, I had always avoided dresses in part because of cost. Any dress with "Sharapova" in the name is over $100, and TW is selling one dress for a whopping $134. Well, most of the dresses I am trying run $50-$70. Since a skort can easily be $50, dresses are reasonably economical.

Here's the dress they have for $136. It's beautiful, but way over the top for the circles in which I run -- mostly public parks and county facilities. It would be the tennis equivalent of wearing a ball gown to go to the supermarket.

^What? What's ugly about it?

Maybe this would be a good opportunity to find out what the fellas find attractive in tennis attire. Are some colors better than others? What do guys think about the stuff Maria Sharapova tends to wear. Like this one, which I think is attractive but I would never in a bazillion years consider wearing:

sharapova needs to go home and stop being sponsored. that dress is ugly. its like trying to do so much. i prefer more elegant stuff like the ones on page 1:) the black one is ugly too because its like all gaudy and stuff.

I think Sharapova's green dress is interesting, in the way high fashion is interesting on the runway. Just because something looks good on a runway doesn't mean ordinary women will buy it, though.

Why Nike thought many people would actually buy it -- especially since it is so closely associated with Maria and few of us resemble Maria -- is beyond me. Still, I love seeing the pros wear things the rest of us couldn't get away with.

Some of the dresses Maria S wears are a bit too much for me - too weird and confusing. I prefer elegant and simple design - in either pale or flashy colors.

Maria S is slim and tall, yet some of the dresses she wears make her look like an overweight lady.....

But the one on the front page of TW USA right now looks classy on her - yet I suspect her face is photoshopped prettier - she no longer has a face that good looking, so I say she is photoshopped on that photo.

I think the Stella Maccarthy dresses are a bit too messy and confusing. Ana I and to some degree Caroline W looks OK in them, but they don't look great in them.

Just wish there would be more female players at my club, especially females wearing proper stylish outfits - I would play more often, if I had some beatiful female players to look at while playing tennis :D

I hope you learn a little bit from my post. I'm a guy in my late 30's, and I never get tired of looking at beautiful females in good looking stylish outfits - NEVER !

I love women in short dresses/skirts. I used to play mixed tournies with a very attractive friend of mine and she was always dressed in either a skirt and top or a dress... and when serving and returning serves there were often times I found it hard to concentrate with her hunched over in front of me.

Long legs short skirt.. firm... someone slap me out of my stuper.

I wonder what affect it had on our opponents..???

What is with this giving of "stars?" I have never understood it, and it sounds like something that belongs in a high school somewhere . . .

Do you have any of the Stella McCartney dresses? From a guy's perspective, those seem the best and they seem to be flattering to a wide arrange of body types. Sharapova's dresses you need to basically look like her proportion wise.

Usually I like girls who wear black or white, and am a sucker for the skirt. Not a big fan of the booty shorts, dresses are nice if they fit well, and don't have all kinds of superflous crap hanging off of them (like that Sharapova dress).

I like simple clean lines, no crazy patterns, and THE DAMN CLOTHES HAVE TO FIT. Buy stuff in YOUR SIZE, not what is on sale. If something is on sale, and it doesn't fit you right, leave it on the shelf for the next person. If you don't know what fits you right, bring a friend.

Oh, and there is just something about a girl in Barricades. I can't explain it but it is a magical thing.

Cindy could be the dresstester. :) I didn't see any feedback from customers regarding the apparel at TW website. We Canadians need to pay shipping and returning fee so it is risky to buy dresses online.

It is a good deal to buy dresses when they are on sale, even cheaper than buying top + skirt + compression skort.

Oh, really? That's a bummer about the shipping costs. Around here, there's just no place to try on dresses, so all you can do is order on-line.

I just got my second box of dresses from TW today. I'll go try them on and see if any look right. Wish me luck!

Then all the rejects go back in the mail tomorrow.

OK, CrystalClear,

Here's the latest batch of dresses:

BWLIRD-RD-1.JPG

This is a beautiful, striking dress. Everything I have ever seen from Bolle has been awesome. Alas, I am sending it back. The cut is just a bit to straight up and down for me, so it comes off looking boxy in back. For anyone with even a bit less junk in the trunk, it would be perfect.

DUCWDD-CA-1.JPG

Close, but no cigar. Fit was just OK, but it lacked style, you know? The white accent wasn't helping.

FWE9D-NV-1.JPG

A bit ho hum because of the color. Biggest problem was the shelf bra. It goes down to almost my navel. It is in no sense of the word a "bra." It's just a bunch of fabric that is completely in the way. What the heck?

Ding ding ding! We have a winner. It passed inspection from the front, side and back. It even earned a "Mom, that's cute!" from my 16 year old.

Again, the shelf bra is superfluous -- I can't see how anyone could feel comfortable in this thing without a sports bra -- but the flimsy foam cups are removable, so it's OK. $30.

It's nice to know the good people of Yonnex have folks like me in mind! :)

Now I have to decide whether to throw $15 at this little number:

YWFOD-1.JPG

What do you think could be going on with this dress? Are the straps really going to rest on my carotid artery? Is that snakeskin on the sides? Can I possibly get away with wearing that color?

For $15, I guess it's worth it to find out. Stay tuned.

Cindy -- who might just wear this pink dress in tomorrow's singles match

Thank you Cindy for the detailed report. :)

I like this one from Yonnex too, especially the removable cups. No need to worry about the straps. The LuluLemon line I like all have removable cups. I wish all tennis apparel should come with the device. What about the size? just normal size? small is small? medium is medium?

The blue one is cute if it comes with the removable cups.

The best of all is the price. You can't get wrong with that.

Sizing on Yonnex seems to run fairly true. I wear small tops and medium bottoms in most brands.

I think the thing with sizing for me is that the skirt part of the dress has to have some extra yardage, if you will. If it flares a little (as the pink Yonnex does but the red Bolle does not) I will do OK.

There is one issue with the pink Yonnex. There is maybe one inch of extra material around the top of the bust line in back, where the tag is. That leaves a gap that looks like it needs to be safety pinned. I'm going to take it to the dry cleaner tomorrow and see if there is an easy way to take it in a tad.

You can see from this picture that anything designed to look right on an upper body ripped like that is going to gap a bit on li'l ole me.
