Rachel Getting Married
Don't watch this movie
I watched the Shawshank Redemption last night, definitely was one of the best movies ive ever seen.
i love you beth cooper. not sure how bad it is yet
Well, happy anniversary Tina.
Amen, brother, amen.
Seven Pounds.
Hope it's not as bleak as the book. A real downer. Let us know what you think of it.
I've no real dog in this Rachel vs. The Shawshank Redemption fight, but whatever philistine sensibilities I may harbor got the better of me with regard to the later as I've never watched 'Shawshank if for no other reason than the name reeked of self-important pretense. How flimsy is that logic? lol^^^
Rachel getting Married is better than this over-rated middling fare.
The SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION....oooooh....."THIS is an important work of art."
That said, ever see the movie "Morgan!" ?? It's an amusing (if off-beat) watch.
(David Warner, Vanessa Redgrave)[/size
The wife and I wanted to see that as well, not a lot of free time though.
I told my co-workers I wanted to see it and they acted like I was Hitler reincarnated. "Dude, Tom Cruise is a scientology nut job, why the hell would you want to see him?"
I was like "does he play a nutjob in the movie?"
I could give two $hits what someone's religion is, I just like action movies and I like Tom Cruise. I find it amazing that people won't go see a movie 'cuz Tom Cruise is in it, yet they'll cheer on Tiger Woods since "they like him as the athlete, not the man."
DO watch this movie. It's much better than most movies today.
Tina, seeing you post this makes me question our future together.

Well, when you've finally formed an opinion of what you've seen, please let us know.
As for "Shawshank..." I saw it again on Blu-ray recently. Not the masterpiece some make it out to be (perhaps it gets some hate because too many people have it in their top 10 ), but still a fine film with Capra-esque qualities. It's interesting to note that it was relatively overlooked when it came out, in a year where "Pulp Fiction" and "Forrest Gump" were plastered all over multiplex screens. ...
Too late! Where the heck were you about six months ago?
I don't recall. Refresh my memory please?
Overlooked in theaters, not by the Academy. That year, it became known as "the best film (almost) nobody ever saw".
You are of course entitled to your opinion, but the aforementionned "Forrest Gump" is, imho, far more "overrated" than Shawshank.
I'm not sure Forrest Gump IS overrated. It may have performed very well and won some awards, but I don't think film critics and the like take it entirely seriously and routinely include it in retrospective "best films" lists. I think Shawhank has better lasting critical acclaim, and I'm not sure it's warranted.
The Last Airbender...
I don't watch the cartoon of The Last Airbender but to the guys that have seen the movie and so far, had negative reviews about the movie, is it just a bad adaptation of the TV show or just a bad movie altogether?
just finished 'The Hurt Locker'
Not bad. Another war film about Iraq/Afghanistan.
Ending was a little weird, but jman gives it a 7.5/10.
Same here. So much tension in that movie but the ending was bit odd.
Then we obviously do not share the same definition of "overrated".

Well, I use the standard and commonly understood definition of "overrated". If you use some other, strange one, then perhaps we don't share the same definition.
1. For a film to be "overrated", it must be highly rated by both critics and the public in the first place. Ok we have that.
2. For a film to be "overrated", it must also have, over time, developped a critical mass of reviewers/movie fans with a contrarian opinion, i.e. who can offer sensible arguments as to why they believe a film is "overrated".
As far as Shawshank is concerned, I just don't see that critical mass anywhere. Not amongst critics, not amongst moviegoers, and not on movie related forums.
You've got it backwards. The very fact that you haven't seen a critical mass of people calling the film overrated is the very evidence I would suggest demonstrates that it's overrated. I.e., people rate it "highly". Overly so in my opinion. Hence, I call it "overrated". Got it?
The deterioration of Ellen Burstyn's character was just horrific. Truly scared me, it did...Also as im posting this im watching requiem for a dream which is in my top 5 movies of all time if you havent seen it i would reccomend it, but prepare to be horribly depressed...the first movie i have seen that as the credits were rolling i just sat there thinking oh my god what did i just watch.
Yes it's your opinion which, on it's own, has no bearing whatsoever on how a film "rates" without the above critical mmass.
Furthermore, you just stated that "The Hurt Locker" is overrated when it's another perfect example of a film which routinely gets criticized and has achieved a critical mass of detractors. Since you're contradicting yourself, you really need to make up your mind...
Of course it's my opinion, you ninny. Where did I ever write -- and more importanty, WHY would I ever write -- something like "There is a critical mass of people who think Shawshank Redemption is overrated"?
I make my own judgements and recommendations to people. I don't rely on reguritating what others might have said. ("Should I see 'Shawshank Redemption', heycal? I've heard people like it and it got some great reviews." "Gee, I don't know Bob. I could give you my personal feelings about it, but aren't you just better off googling this, and following whatever advice you see there?")
Say what? There is no contradiction at all. If The Hurt Locker routinely gets criticized and has achieved a "critical mass" of detractors, it's news to me. While I can't claim to have done an in-depth investigation into it's current status among the "critical mass", it seems like I've spent the last year subjected to heaps of awards and critical praise bestowed upon this movie.
Now I realize I might sound a tad anal about this, but it's a pet peeve of mine. No reason to get so snippy, it's not good for your blood pressure. Here's a funny movie quote for you:
