I would like to watch horror flicks like The Witch.
It is not your regular horror movie. It is slow. It takes time to develop. Yet it has this tension about it which it maintains till the very end. It's a period drama with mind blowing camera work and authenticity.
It is set in 1620s Jamestown(the first permanent British settlement in America).
Quite easily the best horror movie I have ever watched.

Forget those OLD movies. Download Steam, buy The Witness, and play it.
Haven't videogames surpassed movies in the amount of money they make a while back already? I found a few old games my brother had left behind when he moved out a couple of years ago, and they are actually very good (as in atmospheric or cinematic) and I was surprised how much they get you involved in the action. They are pretty old, so maybe nobody has heard of them (Max Payne and Ghost Recon.) I also got into a more modern game last year that somebody recommended to me which is very well made called The Cat Lady. I used to be dismissive of gaming as a legitimate genre in an artistic sense, but there is a lot of artistry put into some of these games, and they can create on the player a sense of, should we say, exaltation?

Oh, I loved this one when I watched it. This is my type of horror movie. I can recommend to you (first thoughts):
The Others
Session 9
The Machinist
(I am not sure whether you would call this one a Horror movie or a psychological thriller, but it's exceptional anyway.)
Angel Heart (Back when Mickey Rourke's face didn't single-handedly (single-facedly?) make any movie the scariest horror movie you had seen up to then.)

I found a copy of The Cranes are Flying and I am watching tonight or tomorrow night.

But I already planned your night!

Here's the room for your television:

The room comes complete with drinks, films, and music!

Good Lord. I will bequeath unto you my rope and my stool (the four legged one, the other type I will invest fully in General Pro Players Discussion .)

Concerned for @Northern's sanity, I was going through my mental catalog of more uplifting films, starting with the Danish, Swedish, and Russian films in my mind. This probably won't help brighten his mood:

See, I watched this one in December (2 months ago) and it has stood with me since then. It's beautiful, tragic, and poignant. It's the type of movie that makes you wish you could disembody and reincarnate as a character in the movie to be able to sway the characters' tragic decission course. And it makes you think. In a sense a good movie is like a romantic heartbreak (and yes, it brings you one step closer to suicide too HEHE.)

I just like solving puzzles. The Cat Lady is an odd title for you to have picked up - who plays point and click adventures these days? If you actually like it then try Thimbleweed Park. There's a ton of P&Cs I could recommend but haven't got around to playing The Cat Lady yet.

If you want "artistic sense" then get The Witness or The Talos Principle. Or pick up all The Room games for your phone. They are highly inventive.

Men In War 1957
(Robert Ryan, Aldo Ray, Vic Morrow, A.J. Edward)
Very gloomy movie set in September 1950. Korean war started June 1950.
It is a about what is left of a rifle platoon now just trying get back to their lines deep in enemy territory.

Robert Ryan in real life was a Marine drill sergeant in WWII and college boxing champion. After the war, Ryan went to Dartmouth College.

Vic Morrow plays a coward!

Aldo Ray plays a hard case sergeant trying to get his shell shocked Colonel back to their line so he can be back to normal.

A.J. Edwards plays a black soldier in 1950s.

Director was Anthony Mann, famous for his westerns. Anthony Mann was disapointed with the end result of U.S. version.
Thank you, another one to add to my list.

When I was a child my parents were playing an old movie on our local TV station and I vividly remember a dramatic scene where a main character (I think it was Kirk Douglas but it might have been Burt Lancaster or somebody else) said something to the effect of "I wish I could reach into my head and pull out of my brain all the horrible things I've seen." Which makes me believe it was a War movie, but it could have been a different movie (police drama, perhaps?) Anyway, if somebody knows what this movie is, please let me know. ;)

I am not particularly into "Point and Click" puzzle games. But then again, I'm not particularly into games. I like it because of the atmosphere more than anything. And that's something that I feel some of these old games (I think TCL is probaby 10 years old, if not more, but probably not as old as Max Payne) do have quite a bit of. Maybe a case for Orson Welles' quote "The absence of limitations is the enemy of art." Thank you for the recommendations, I hadn't heard of ANY of them, as normally games is not something I seek out, but I do like atmospheric or artistic games.

12 Angry Men, Night and Fog (short film/doco), The Holy Mountain and maybe Martyrs.
Thank you for these recommendations. But isn't Martyrs a French horror film that has nothing to do with war? Or maybe the cult in that movie is caused by war? I saw it a while back and I don't remember the details, but it's a very good (and very hard to watch) movie.

I think The Big Lebowski is the quintessential cinematic treatise on war-induced PTSD.
If my psyche is ever scarred by the ravages of war I want to take the slow and easy way out perusing the Dairy aisle in my local supermarket at 1:00 AM in my bath robe and slippers as well. The Dude showed us that Chill is so much better than Kill.

Some where in the past I saw a movie where Tilda Swinton was in a love scene where she total naked and I must very impressed by her figure. Just had to mention it since I a big fan of hers now because of her exposure!:giggle:
Tilda is something special.
Think I’ve watched all her movies. A great actress. I love her icy cold expression. Jepp. She god a good figure indeed. She is almost not from this earth in a way. She is like 50 years old too, got roles playing 20 year olds now as well.
Tilda is really talented and has a strong theatrical background. Her husband was an artist and I think she's now dating a painter; she approaches film as an art form and makes interesting choices in film roles. As a bonus for @Harry Wild, she is comfortable with her body as an actress.
Tilda, Tilda, Tilda. Yes, she is special. She is like a hyperborean swan gliding under the moonlight over a frozen field of snow.

P.S.: In what movie is she naked? Just asking out of artistic curiosity. ;)

A thousand apologies.. couldn't help myself.
HEHE. I didn't mean my dismay to be taken literally. I thank you for all your recommendations.

I'd like suggestions for a movie similar to Zombieland... but with more nonzombie female nudity.
Have you tried searching the interwebs for that most rare form of art (precariously represented however in some hard-to find websites) called The Female Form?

I thought you were recommending me in particular movies where the psychological effects of war were showcased, since you quoted me. I think the object of this thread is to give recommendations on specific requests, but a little branching out and free style is good too. Great movie, yes. But really hard to watch. On topic: If you like that type of movie, watch Kill List (or not.) And definitely do not watch A Serbian Movie (even if you like that type of stuff.) If selective memory deletion was a thing I'd pay to have this movie erased from my mind completely.

I have already watched The Machinist multiple times because Bale is my favourite actor and it was a very good watch. And yeah not exactly a horror flick but more of a psychological thriller.
A mindfuck similar to The Machinist is Triangle. It is a psychological horror thriller. It has a few flaws but saying anything more will be giving spoilers. But I am sure you will love it.

I hope you enjoy these movies, I know I did. They tend to be depressing though (especially Session 9 and Angel Heart,) so watch out for shrink bills.

Triangle is also a favorite of mine. At first it seems it's going to derive into cliche and cheesy territory easily (no pun intended on "derive" HEHE) but it is really good and engaging.

BTW, a similar one to Triangle is Primer (in the time travel component, anyway.) Primer is a very low budget movie which became sort of a cult film, and that has spun whole websites theorizing about the time travel components of it. it's a little challenging mentally, so it's one of those movies you need to watch multiple times.

The director of Primer (Shane Carruth) released a few years ago Upstream Color. I like this one as well, but beware that it is so heavy with symbolism and open to interpretation that many people hate it because of it. I didn't, as I like movies with open interpretation.

I would really like to believe that nothing can disturb me as far as cinema is concerned but yeah this one was a bit too much. After some time I realised that there is nothing to watch in it but I sat through it because I was kind of curious about how far they can take it. And they took it pretty far lol.
The Human Centipede Part 1 was like a walk in the park for me. It didn't bother me but the second part is really disturbing but surprisingly funny. It is shot in black and white and the lead character is just all round cringey. It's a nightmare of a movie especially if someone doesn't like the gore.
But I would say that it's a much better experience than A Serbian movie which is neither funny nor meaningful.
There are plenty of negative reviews for THC 2 but here are some of the positive ones and I mostly agree with them.
Giving it a score of 7 out of 10, Bloody Disgusting writer Brad Miska said the film was a "brilliant response to critics of his first film. It makes a strong statement that it's just a movie and that people take his work way too seriously, while also implementing a unique concept". Miska added that he "found it an intensely engaging and absolutely hilarious meta experience that gets its point across with flying colors", but was critical of the script's lack of depth.[39] Entertainment Weeklywriter Owen Gleiberman gave the film a B+ rating, stating that viewers "may feel gripped by the horror of what you're seeing and the terror of what's coming". Gleiberman noted how "The scatological climax would have the Marquis de Sade gagging into his popcorn."[40]Writing in the New York Post, V. A. Musetto gave the film 3 out of 4 and said Full Sequence"is sick, disgusting and vile. (but) It's also demonically funny, stylish and ingenious."
There are plenty of disturbing movies out there but nothing quite like the 1990 movie Begotten. If any movie deserves to be put in the Experimental genre it's Begotten.
I don't really have words for it.

They say that ASM was a symbolic invective against modern Serbian society. LOL. To me it was just a pile of disturbing garbage, but what do I know.

THC I watched but didn't like too much. I didn't like the Saw movies either. Normally gore is not something I like, but occasionally I have enjoyed some movies in that genre like the Final Destination series or The Collector. Neither of these are recommended for the faint of heart.

You have piqued my curiosity with Begotten, will have to watch, thanks.

thankfully you stopped before the 15 minute mark.
I have watched many movies about the holocaust but most of them are survival stories like Schindler's list and the Pianist.
They are masterpieces but they don't completely capture the pain and suffering of all those people.
Those movies are about the few hundreds who made it out alive but this documentary is about the millions who didn't, which is why this is more painful to watch.

I'm finishing The Cranes are Flying which @Mike Bulgakov suggested and it's a very good film, I'll give my thoughts in a bit. Thank you for the Threads suggestion. Kill List is a very, very harsh film. In a way it's the most shocking movie I've seen besides A Serbian Movie (which was beyond disturbing and in my opinion didn't serve any additional purpose.)

I just finished The Cranes are Flying and it is a very good movie dealing with loss due to war in a very dignified way. I think part of it has to do with the way the movie serves as a political statement as well (not political in the sense of trying to further the interests of Communism, but rather in the way of serving as a statement about how the U.R.S.S. could go forward after the massive losses in WWII and put that loss into a meaningful and purposeful context.) To do this it doesn't focus on massive war scenes showcasing the carnage, but on a very particular personal tragedy and how it affects the people at home. There is a fair share of class commentary in it as well, as is to be expected, embodied in the contraposition between Boris and his cousin and their respective behaviors.

Cinematically speaking it is a very interesting movie, some of the camera angles, lighting, etc feel close to expressionist cinema. A few very memorable scenes including the air raid attack which is one of the dramatic climaxes of the movie. I won't give an spoilers. Thank you for the recommendation, Mike.

It largely depends on what you like about There will be Blood.
Is it Daniel Day Lewis's performance?
Or is it the tone, the setting, the tension of the movie?
So because I don't know what you are looking for I will try to give an answer that covers all of it.
First of all watch all the movies of Paul Thomas Anderson if you haven't already.
More specifically his first three feature length movies- Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia.
They don't have the same themes as There will be Blood. But the magic is same.
Also The Master by PTA is awesome.

Similar movies to There will be Blood by other directors are:
The Assassination of Jesse James(2007).
True Grit(2010).
3:10 to Yuma(2007).
Django Unchained(2012).
Meek's Cutoff(2010).
Matewan(1987).

Again watch a lot of stuff from the director of the movie. Coen brothers in this case.
A similar movie (in the sense of having really strong protagonist and antagonist and being a great thriller) is Heat(1995) by Michael Mann.
The Dark Knight(2008) is similar in that way too.
No Country for Old Men is first and foremost a thriller. It is dark, violent, suspenseful and has everything one wants from a thriller and it still feels realistic and kind of western. It's what you called a modern western. It's one of the few near-perfect movies I have seen.
So based on all that sometime ago I myself was looking for similar movies and I found these:
Hell or High Water(2016).
The Searchers(1956).
Touch of Evil(1958).
Bring me the Head of Alfredo Garcia(1974).
The Place beyond the Pines(2012).
The Hateful Eight(2015).
Sicario(2015).
Gone Girl(2014).
Jackie Brown(1997).
Gangs of New York(2002).
Miller's Crossing(1990).
Chinatown(1974).
The L.A. Confidential(1997).
The Usual Suspects(1995).
Mystic River(2003).
Mud(2012).
Blue Ruin(2013).

David Fincher has a similar style to the Coen Brothers.
Some of Fincher's movies which are absolutely brilliant thrillers are:
Se7en.
The Game.
Fight Club.
Panic Room.
Zodiac.
The girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Gone Girl(already mentioned above).

thanks!! for the big reply! watched almost all of these - great selection. I didnt watch Blue rain, The searchers, Touch of evil. Will let you know how i like them! :)
