Hawaii Five-O

Anyone else catch the new version/re-make of Hawaii Five-O on CBS on Monday night?

I thought it was AWESOME and maybe even better than the original series. It was like watching a big budget action movie.

You can see what made this series so popular in the 70's (ran for 12 seasons): Beautiful scenery, big waves, sunny beaches, babes in bikinis, cool cops, etc. And, of course, the iconic line that became part of the American lexicon - "Book 'em, Dano!" Also the best opening theme music/song in TV history! :)

Loved It. Little late though.

Not ready to heap the same praise as BP (except for the theme song - undisputed GOAT). But they did a solid job. Will keep watching (via DVR). Hope they don't pull the plug too early - going against Monday Night Football on the other coast...

I couldn't watch more than 10 minutes of this utterly formulaic smooth cop nonsense. And I'll take the "Mission Impossible" theme music, thanks.

"Mission Impossible" theme was killer...

I don't know if I'll be watching the new Five-O, hard to get interested in series TV these days. I remember the old show rather fondly, but what was with the occasional episode with "criminal mastermind" Wo Fat? Generally they did pretty straight cop stuff but now and then had this James Bond villain thing.

I was more partial to old Tom Selleck in Magnum, P.I. for my Hawaii fix.

Wow...another cop show. and a remake. How original.
Have you seen it? I didn't think so.

CSI: NY is "another cop show". Hawaii Five-O is very different. It's more like Die Hard with more babes, beaches, exotic scenery, big waves, machine guns, and muscle cars. :)

Actually, I watched the first episode the other night....just because someone had the gall to disagree with you then they must not have seen it? Open up your mind grasshopper....

Like I said....another cop show, a remake? Wow. Nothing special and not very original. Next.

I got it on my DVR. Will probably get to watch it tonight or tomorrow night. I'm also going to give The Event a shot when I get around to it.

Sounds very different. Novel idea. Very risky stuff.

There's this new restaurant near my house. Claims to serve burgers AND fries. Even rumored to have "wings".

If you think it's "just another cop show", then I'd say it's you that needs to "open up your mind".

And if you're not interested in seeing "another cop show", why did you even bother to tune in for a whole hour?

Oh, and it's not supposed to be original. That's why it's a re-make. How can it be original when they used the same title name for the series and the same names for all the characters and the same occupations and locations?

Yes, and you must often see exotic scenery, big waves, surfers, beaches, babes in bikinis, and muscle sports cars on Law & Order: SVU and CSI: NY, too, right? :???:

Maybe "Centered" will come by this thread and let you know which logical fallacy you are guilty of.

The scenic setting in Hawaii is the best part of the show and what makes it different than just another NYC cop show. The Hawaii scenery is stunning in HD. :)

Loved the music, loved the scenery (female & otherwise), loved the show. But then, I've got a real soft spot for the Islands -- spent my formative years there (1st 4 years of school). Take me back to my little grass shack...

BTW, did anyone pick up on the subtle difference in the name of the new show? Hidden answer below:

1968 show: Hawaii Five-O
2010 show: Hawaii Five-0

Yes, but I read it. Apparently it refers to the fact that Hawaii is the fiftieth state so it should be 0 not O.

I must say that Dan-o's ring-tone was hilarious!!!
What's even funnier, and of course appropriate, is that Dano drives a 2011 Mustang GT with the, yup, you guessed it - the big "5.0" emblem on the side of the car. That emblem is not on the 2010 Mustang GT since it still uses a 4.6L V-8 engine but with the new 2011 model they went back to the venerable 5.0L V-8 (totally new design of course from the old 5.0L engine).

So maybe that's why the show is now called "Hawaii Five-0"? LOL

Actually, at the end of the first episode, they are all sitting around the table trying to come up with a name for their special unit and as of the end of the show, they still hadn't thought of an appropriate name yet. Who wants to bet that they will eventually call themselves - "Hawaii Five-0"? :) LOL

I give the new show an A-, only because Jack Lord was one of a kind as McGarrett. The new guy might grow into the role, but let's see.

This modern take on the Five-O series appears to have an improved character development -- more back story (or side story, if you wish). Hoping that they continue to develop this facet of the show, the interaction of personalities, without making it a soap opera. Something along the lines of NCIS or House would be good.

There is room in this world for both the MI and Five-O theme music. Other favorites include the Mike Hammer theme and the Peter Gunn theme. The latter has been a staple for rock bands for several decades. Check these out:

You are correct. I was a kid living the in the territory of Hawaii when it became the 50th state. Did not know what all the honking was about until my mom clued me in. Hawai'i actually expected to become the 49th state but Alaska beat them to the punch - the Hawaiian punch (groan inserted here). In fact, I recall a record label that released a lot of Hawaiian music that went by the name, 49th State Records.

My Dad informed me that the opening sequences of the pilot episode, that were supposed to be South Korea, were actually filmed in Hawai'i. He would know since he and my Mom were born and grew up on Oahu and Maui. He recognized some of it as Ka'anapali (on Maui) &/or possibly parts of Oahu.

I don't know how anyone can replace Jack Lord with anyone let alone an Australian. It's sacrilege.
I watched the second episode. I am VERY glad they kept the original theme song-read somewhere that they wanted to tweak it a little.:) I think these characters are way too cocky for my taste-I want to smack them sometimes. J. Lord's McGarrett was tough-you didn't even think about breaking the law in his town!
Overall, I think it should last at least 2 or 3 seasons.

Have seen a little more than half of the 2nd episode. It looks even better than the pilot ep. A good balance of action and story/character development. It seems that the writers have improved a bit from the 1st ep -- starting to hit their stride? A bit of humor and warmth mixed in with the action. Hope that the series writers, actors and production team keeps up the the level that they've demonstrated in the "Ohana" ep.

2nd episode was entertaining. But the Dan-o - McGarrett bickering is getting a little old. Scott Caan sounds like a short, whiny girl.

Despite the bickering, the task force is evolving into more of an Ohana (family) -- which is the title of this episode. Noticed that the IMDb users have given this episode a respectable 7.7 rating (compared to a 7.6 overall rating of the original series). Ohana review:

Network TV seems to be trying to make an effort to produce better programming these days- lotsa new shows. That "Wo Fat" sinister Asian mastermind was puzzling to me too. And this went on for many episodes. Fu Manchu and all that. Looking back at it now, I figure they could hire a bunch of Asian actors living locally for cheap, so why not incorporate it into the story line? Just keepin' it real.

Wow, given your surname, I am surprised by your post. In the original version, McGarrett ordered around "Chin," as if Chin were his butler. "Chin, check out his record, or Chin, call the coroner." I wouldn't have been surprised if McGarrett ordered Chin to pick up his laundry.

Man, can't you see the difference with the current "5-0" show? Daniel Dae Kim's character is definitely more empowered and masculine than the original guy. (apologies to the original actor, I know you had to work within certain constraints)

Oh that's so clever of you to point this out. In case you haven't been aware of network TV for the last 20 years, risky doesn't work for the popular taste. Out-of-the-mainstream stuff on TV usually goes onto independent film channels and other avenues.

Jeez, I thought tennis players were more sophisticated than this.
