Way to go Deiton took out Hamanka number12 in the country first round.Then took out Matsuya number6 in the country.He then lost in the semis to Restrepo number 4 in the country in the semis.He did all this even after hurting his back in the first round.I think this should shut up all those critics that said at best he will play division 2 college tennis??? i dont get what the big deal is? why is there hype about a freshman in high school? tbh i doubt its a big deal that a top 20 kid beat another top 20, they're all pretty similar in skill at the top.

I think it is a job well done. But it is expected. He's a 2nd half 14 soon to be 15 and the others were 1st half except for one and he's a 2nd half as well.
Time will tell on this one.

In this type of tournament, its the norm for players to play in their age group. Is it his fault who is put in his side of the draw?
Deiton is a good player and has good results playing in higher age groups.
Also is coming back from a serious illness.

I saw his first two matches in the tournament. Deiton competes hard and he's a solid player with a big forehand. He did hurt himself when i saw him play against Toshiki. Restrepo is a nice player too, however; the lopsided score makes me think Deiton was hurt.

First you can't take the W's away from him. He did earn them. Having said that he is playing little kiddies. His TRN results reflect low level older age group wins, same birth year wins but spotty, and lower birth year blue chip wins.
Bottom line he's beating the best of the year under him. Still kiddies, but like I said time will tell now as they get older the birth years won't matter so much.
I hope he does well but my guess he'll be plagued with injuries and "reasons" to w/d. Which by the way I see a lot of.

Deiton did hurt his lower back in the first round.Restrepo is a smart player he knew Deit couldnt hit a backhand at all.I honestly think if Deit wasnt hurt he could of won the tournament.Im not saying Deit is a world beater but he will be a good division one player.

I agree with ga_tennis. The kid is competitive with top 10 nationally ranked players and he is getting ridiculed here?
Anyone at that level in the 14s-18s has the potential to go pro depending on their weapons. Only time will tell.

The kid can play tennis and he's a good kid. I saw every kid in the 14s play at the tournament. Deiton would have been my pick to win. I'd pick him again too.

TCF... As you know I'm the voice of reason and always give credit when credit is due. His wins are NOT to be taken away from him that would not be cool at all. However, the kid is over 6', specialized in tennis from a very young age so by definition he should win.

Very true, success at this age for a boy who may have had his growth spurt early does not guarantee anything long term. I have seen to many highly ranked tall boys in the 14s come crashing down as they get older to make any bets on the future success. The truth comes out in the 18s.
But I am just glad the kid got over whatever nasty virus he had and is playing tennis at a high level again.

I disagree with the height comment. It's not how big you are, it's how big you play. In the 14's especially, I've seen many a jack rabbit take down a giraffe.

or maybe because ive been injured the past 9 months and have nothing else to do :-|. Look dont get me wrong, Deiton is a good player, he gave me a beat down 1 and 2 a couple of years ago in the 12's, his wins are just sort of expected given his height and skill level.
edit: just looked at the NJT draw..he didnt even win the thing...zandrix did, hes the one who you should be hyping up :lol:

It depends on the kid of course. I have seen many boys who get their growth spurts early dominate in the 14s than fail in the 18s when the other boys catch up. Other boys who are shorter use their speed in the 14s and then get slammed in the 18s because they do not have the power.
The bottom line is none of us know which 14s boys will be great in the 18s.
Will it be a Deiton, who has been tall since a young age? Or a Kozlov who is smaller? Or will both of them succeed even though they have different body types? Or will both falter?
Thats why the juniors is so interesting. We can all speculate but its all going to be proven one way or another when they reach college age.
But both boys are winning now and should be congratulated.

And don't forget all the positive stuff. Because of the way this kid competes, I suspect he'll do just fine regardless of where he goes in life (tennis or no tennis).
I believe the reason that so many people talk positively about Deiton here is because a handful of people talk negatively about him. And as long as people continue to question this kid's accomplishments, you're going to get people jumping in to his defense, and rightfully so. Remember, he's still just a kid. And regardless of his height, he's on the back side of 14, etc.. he can still play tennis.
He can certainly play tennis and play it well enough to beat some decent competition. Is he the next big thing like his dad is promoting? No, he is not! But he is still a pretty decent player!

And pontificate he does! No one minds! Pontificate away, you can join him if you would like. Did you happen to watch any of his matches? Supposedly, he destroyed his competition in the first two matches and then got hurt.

I did get to watch him play. He gutted out the win against Toshiki and he was hurt. Good win there as Toshiki moves so well and will make you hit a lot of balls. Deiton has a big forehand that puts him in a strong position. I'd like to see him come in more. Had he been healthy, I think he would have won the tournament. Bu that's part of the game too.
Did you get to see some 12 year old kid, not Kozlov, there? Coaches and players alike are talking about him. He is from Maryland, I think.

Francis Tiafoe from Maryland. Yes. He's got a "great" feel for the game. He needs help with movement...but who doesn't at that age? What about Kozlov? The kid has moxy, feel, great hands BUT, personally, I think the gap is narrowing there and it will continue to narrow. Kids his age are starting to blossom.
