Federer's String setup?

Is it guts in the mains and alu in the crosses or the other way around?
does he use string savers on 4th and 6th from top? because that's what I thought...
How does he use his lead tapes?

to be honest i love threads like these. because it sucks going through pages and pages of threads. lol.

ngut in main and alu rough in crosses was the last time i checked. 4th & 6th for string savers sounds right. he only uses one strip of lead at the 12 O'clock to reach 364g.

Vs team mains at 48.5/alu power crosses at 45.2lbs. Ten string a lings, 4th/6th crosses down, five each. Power pads at throat. (Wilson prem. is vs team)

48lbs? I'm surprised by that. I thought Federer's string tension was in the mid 60s

He wouldn't still be competitive in this era with string tension in the 60s (in a 90sqin head!).

Surprised by 48? It was as low as 46/43 at one stage IIRC.

I agree. Big time.

There's no way in the world, regardless of what material is presented AND by who, that I will believe he strings his racquets below 60 lbs.

I already said don't believe everything your told or read.

Question everything, including what I'm saying right now.

I don't believe it and never will, but I could be wrong?

Nah!

Here's a pic from Priority One, Rog's (old) sticks.
The number on the sticker shows the string tension.

incidently, 22 Kilos is equal to 48.5 Pounds.

I don't buy it!

I say this because I know how that racquet will play with that low string tension.

It will play like this. You will hit two balls then throw it away.

I used to have a ''True Tension" stringing machine .. it was very efficient ,too efficient by everyday standards.. I used to string 110 frame sizes rackets at 60/48 and it would feel like 65lbs stung on an Ektelon stringer .. maybe these newer stringers have the same kind of exact tension ,thus string at 48.5 feels like 60+ lbs on a regular standard stringer,,

You clearly either don't know what you're talking about or don't know how to hit a ball.

Well, you've clearly never used this frame, because that tension is just awesome in it. With the extra lead under the bumper, and with the gut mains, it just feels sweet. You dont overhit with the racquet, but you do get alot of spin and feel.

I use a KPS 88 strung at 42lbs and it feels great. It's not too far of a stretch to see one of the greatest players of all time enjoying a tension a bit higher then mine in a 90 inch head! :p

Well, I'm sure, at the level you play at, the racquet feels good.

federer does string 1.5 kilo mains tighter than crosses.nate ferguson of p1 posted a picture with a comment about rogers rackets strung for his match against nadal

haha, then you are saying Nate Ferguson doesn't have a clue of what he is talking about and he just spreads wrong info to all of us, FabFed has match used Federer racquets, same combination Babolat VS in mains at ~51 lbs. and Luxilon Alu power rough at ~48, he adds lead tape under the bumper at 12 o'clock to bring the weight of the frame to 364 g and a balance of ~32.2cm... Go, do your homework before coming in here and trying to deny everone's opinion, besides we have all the accurate and true info of Fed's actual setup

Wowww...You're the one who thought it would be a good idea to get the American K 6.1 grommet for an Asian version K 6.1 and finds it doesn't fit, and the one who created a thread on Federer's string setup when this has been discussed 100 times. Who's the idiot?

Fuji, this is encouraging to read your post of 42lbs on the KPS and you're enjoying it. Last night I strung my KPS with poly(M)/syngut(C) @ 40/44lbs. I hope I enjoy it. :-|

YES FEDERERBESTTENNIS.
PWNED.
SIT DOWN NOMADIC.

For the sake of this thread. I use 48 mains/51 crosses, syn gut/LXN BB Rough with my Donnay Graphite Borg 85 sqi. I never knew that fed strings his with the same tension. Through this thread I found out because I was curious today, lol. Anyway, I've experimented with different tension with this frame and finally got it nailed to this tension. Never thought it would hit like a dream. I would slap the ball flat and finish with a lot of spin during plow through, the ball doesn't go anywhere but down and quick.

federer´s tension is not 48/51. it´s 51/48

Fed Also Changes Frames Each Ball Change

Who of you playing Fed's setup actually change frames at his frequency? You need to take that into consideration when recommending tension preferences to the experimental curious. It will play great, probably even through a match or two, but a week or two down the road, you're gonna wish a slightly higher tension setup, say 54/51 or along the lines of my signature for you MPers.

well fed uses gut. at least the gut will hold its tension for a pretty long time

I love people trying to copy exact same setup as their idol, as if thats going to make them play better.

i can't say i disagree with kunohara 100%. I personally don't have an idol but i am a big fan of the game. Tension variance to me is more like how my arm would feel the day after. I don't think i play better or worst for that matter, it's just that it is comfortable for me since i use an 85 sqi frame. I tried 55 lbs before and this frame i tell you, it felt like 65 lbs.

Gut not Invincible to Tension Loss

well fed uses gut. at least the gut will hold its tension for a pretty long time

While the nattie is better at tension maintenance than anything else, it still is not impervious to it. The first overnight curve is steepest but every playing session contributes to tension loss. I measure my stringbed stiffness daily with a Beers tensometer and I can assure you of this fact... I lose about 8 to 10% on the first day and another 2% or so for every 2 hours of singles play. If I were to play a non-textured poly in the crosses of my hybrid (and I have done so to experiment), the tension loss from play increases slightly. If I haven't broken string by the third week, I'm cutting it out, not as much due to the tension loss but more because it's dead.

Just to experiment, I tried the reverse out on my new ps95blx and had rpm black code in the main and bad vgut on the crosses. I thought this was going to be a good combination but it was just terrible compared to the poly-multi hybrid I had been using. Strings do not grip the ball well and have a serious trampoline effect yet strangely underpowered at the same time. Also hard on the arm. Both strung at 52.

Will give the gut main a try.

Just wondering, do you think it could be a matter of string choice? I know Dolgopolov uses Lux 4G mains and Murray uses Lux ALU Power mains, so Poly Mains/Gut crosses are pretty popular (not as popular as Gut Mains/Poly Crosses), so there must be something to like about it (at least for Murray and The Dog). Do you think if you used a different string, and also varying tensions, the result would be significantly different?
I use Gut Mains and Poly crosses, use varying tensions, and it really does feel amazing and is definitely the best string setup I have used. However I am always looking at trying new things, but I don't want to waste all that money on gut if I end up hating the combo.
