Nadal Perfect Sweep

It's hard to imagine that Nadal can actually earn more points during this clay court season than he did last year. He actually didn't enter in this clay court 500 event in Barcelona. He is no longer just defending points, he can actually distance himself even further.

Sadly, I don't see anyone who can even give nadal a flinch. Minor characters might include Ferrer, Almagro, Montanes, Verdasco. Once the clay court season hits, there's no drama or question who's gonna win. Would love to see someone who could scare Nadal, but nobody out there. We all know the ending. Almost like why bother tuning in?

What makes you think he will defend Rome, Madrid and even the French? From the opponents that he has been facing it's really too early to come to any conclusions. The Murray match would suggest that Djokovic would take him out if he plays his best, but Rafa at Monte Carlo could have been still adjusting to the clay... ,no?

I was wondering how Nadal's improved HC and GC would effect his CC play. We will have to wait to make the judgement, however at this point it looks as though it has made his play that much better.

IMO, current Federer does not want to play Rafa on clay as it will just be another win for Rafa in their H2H. However, in Madrid, Federer will probably have to once again go through Djokovic and then Nadal or lose to Nadal in the SF (assuming all 3 players make it to the SF round).

I smell an upset.....the opportunity is just to big......so many gamblers will want to cash in. No one is gonna bet against Nadal on clay......but if someone does and wins....instant millions!

I don't think Federer cares about the head to head he must have by now accepted it isn't likely change much.

And when you think about it he has nothing to lose if he gets beat well everyone expects that, if he wins it's a bonus and he could carry some momentum, which might ultimately free him to play better and beat Rafa at RG?

Dunno if people are watching the same matches I am, but IMO Nadal doesn't look anywhere NEAR as unstoppable as your post makes it to be. It's pretty clear that he's still working on his game, and his ball lacks the action it had last yr, and he's still too defensive for my money.

Contrary to your post, I think the clay season will be the most competitive in recent memory. I'm sure Djokovic will get Rafa in at least one of the masters before the F.O.

And then unless Nadal enters in the terminator mode during R.G, he will be pushed hard by Delpo and Djokovic. I don't see Nadal winning F.O this year, without dropping a set, not given the way he is playing so far.
And if he gets injured by overplaying, he might also lose in RG..

Tough to say. I hear the clay court season has been kind of rearranged? How so? Because I can't see him clean sweeping if it is as it was. His losses at Hamburg/Madrid have come after he's win Monte Carlo/Barcelona/Rome, and he's been exhausted by the time of that 4th event, considering the way he looked in Miami...well, I'm not super confident, especially with Djokovic still sitting home biding his time.

This is an interesting question. Last year wilander suggested at the FO that nadal is now more vulnerable on clay because of his aggressivity. Entering the final nadal had more winners than soderling and imo he handled soderling quite easily in that 3rd set because of his improved offense.

Wilander gives these statements and makes himself sound like a fool.

When Nadal goes on to the attack clay, he becomes a far better player. The increased offense and improved court positioning on grass and hards have HELPED Nadal's game on clay not detracted from it.

In fact in F.O 2008 and MC 2010, where Nadal TRULY looked unstoppable, was when he was the most offensive on clay. I recall thinking in F.O 2008, that Nadal was actually practicing for Wimbledon on the dirt..

But how confident are you about Djokovic? He needed a 3rd set tie-breaker to beat Nadal at Miami and also lost the 1st set at Indian Wells. If Djokovic struggles to beat Nadal on hardcourts then what does his future hold on clay/grass? This is the first year Nadal has ever made the final of both Indian Wells and Miami!1

I agree. I think they should all buy tickets and just watch Nadal play. Even if Nadal is playing clay tennis against a brick wall on the other side of the net, I'm sure he'd still win.

I have to agree with this 100% Good post.

Agressive Nadal on clay is just a Juggernaut. Once he gains momentum, he is impossible to stop.

Wilander was right in a way, but the flatter, deeper, more aggressive game helped Nadal against a flat-hitter like Soderling.

That's not necessarily good. I think the point of avoiding Barcelona last year is that uncle Toni didn't want him to peak too soon to be on the down slope in Roland Garros.
