I downgrade shoes progressively. They start as my main matchplay shoe. When the tread goes, and I get a new pair, they become my practice shoe. Eventually, they only get duty when I'm hitting with the ball machine. After that, I use the remaining rubber on the soles to patch the toe areas of my current matchplay or practice shoe, where the holes always develop. Just cut bits of rubber off, and superglue them to the wear spots.

this kinda sounds like people that break their rackets because theyre sponsored because they want new ones. there are other kids and people out there that can use your used stuff with a better use than you can.

oh, and to answer the question, i usually wear them casually, once i outgrow them, i put them into the box for donation. it doesnt matter if the sole is worn, some people just need something on their feet

Nope I'm being serious. I understand donating lightly used clothing, but who the hell would want shoes soaked with sweat from months of use? That's just disgusting. Just because they are poor doesn't mean they deserve sh it.

Having shoes at all is better than going barefoot in the streets. You seem to think that shoes are only worth wearing while they're in immaculate condition.

Key words are GOODWILL (a store) and SELL (what they do at Goodwill).
Of course no one is going to buy ripped shoes. and of course homeless people aren't going to buy ANYTHING. they're donations, they're FREE. Some people barely get enough food in their stomachs, they're worrying about where they'll get their next meal, not if they're wearing outdated SB's.

I remember doing something similar with a campaign called Soles 4 Souls. Our shoes may look like beat up trash to us, but it could be a life saver to someone else.
Well think about it like this. Let's say you buy some fast food but have an extra burger you don't feel like eating. You see a homeless person. You accidentally drop the burger in the mud. Would you offer this to the person? You would probably if you consider giving someone bacterial infested shoes.

Have you ever volunteered at a food / clothes distribution facility for poor and homeless? If not, please give them 2 hours of your life. It would change your view of the world.
BTW, this will be a shocker for some guys here. But where I grew up, it was common practice to pass on stuff like books, toys, clothes, shoes and other sports gear to younger siblings or other kids in need. There were also enough skilled people available to fix most of the stuff and make it look like new. Unfortunately with modern "manufacturing" we have lost the art. But there are lot of places in asia / africa where you could replace the sole of a shoe for less than $10.
Donating tennis shoes is a great idea. Most of these shoes are in very very good condition except the sole. Replace the sole and you got a nice looking shoe. I hope the shoe companies do that with the shoes we send in for warranty replacement.

Again, I can't take credit for this. Someone else came up with the idea which I think is great. For those who say you should help a homeless organization, I totally agree. I spent a few hours serving lunch to the homeless one day when I was 18 years old and it just gave me so much insight into the problem. It made me realize how blessed and fortunate I am too.

This fails, because you shouldn't even buy the extra burger. Plus, people would think of other things to do with the burger. You don't always see a homeless, always buy fast food, buy an extra, and drop it in mud. Instead you offer something else if you have a sense of guilt. People think about cleaning the shoes before donating it. It's not the same thing.

Tsonga has a point in my opinion. I think you all are taking what he is saying and fitting him with as negative an image as possible. Seriously, what I took from his posts is that he believes that the poor deserve nice things, not that he is a cold-hearted, selfish waste of a human.

As far as wearing old shoes "casually," once my shoes convince me they're old they look pretty shabby. Actually I will sometimes wear a new or fairly new pair to a semi-formal "nice athletic shoes" occasion. But when I'm ready to replace them they usually have holes in the toes and I chuck them, unless I've kept a previous old pair that are even worse--always gotta keep an old nasty pair for emergencies.
I think, for people who replace their shoe more often at a milder point of wear, donating the old ones would be a fine thing.

What did you expect? What can you do with soleless, beaten up shoes besides wear them casually? Nothing lasts forever, and there are limited ways to recycle things.

I know that the Nike Factory Outlet near me has a box that people put old shoes in. I'm pretty sure nike just recycles the material to make new shoes, and definitely doesn't donate the old shoes directly to impoverished people.

Don't usually post in these sorts of threads, but jeez you guys are going way over the top here. This Tsongaali guy did not come across in any of the ways you mentioned above. He has a point you know.
We shoudn't just give the crap we don't want anymore to the homeless or needy. I've just thrown my previous pair of tennis shoes in the bin because they were worn out and passed their useful life. That is - they were worn through, leaked when it rained, and I'd worn through the insole into the air unit. No-one would be able to make use out of these after me and my local charity shop would have asked me what the hell I thought I was doing if I took them there - and they have refused things in the past!
It is a very good and admirable idea to have a scheme whereby shoes can be donated if they don't fit properly, or you're lucky enough to have more than one pair and need to clear out your wardrobe - but they should be in a reasonable condition.
Give they guy a break and stop making him out to be the anti-christ. There are a lot more people fitting of the title "scum" than this guy believe you me and the only loser is you for making such a snapshot judgemental assumption.

I grew up in an apartment building and the landlord, who also lived in the same building, used to resole his shoes with parts of old tires. just because he thought it would be wasteful to throw away a shoe that could be fixed. Funny how the attitudes have changed from the post-WWII area until today.
