Spanish to sue French broadcaster over Nadal drug skit!

They released another video today. Casillas, Gasol and Rafa are using syringes instead of pens. Rafa has the biggest one, of course.

So pathetic.

Well, I am convinced, this is clearly damning evidence against Spanish sports.

They wouldn't put out a second vid if they didn't have any evidence, right?

:)

BTW, if a down to earth guy like Casillas(who doesn't have that huge ego that most footballers possess), who seems genuinely nice, is doping then football is doomed.

Wow, I am surprised they would continue with this, they must really want to push this for international attention. I would have thought the French tennis federation would have told them to halt if they don't condone this.

Don't worry, the Mallorcan Mafia got this covered.

They said they get those kind of complaints daily. They insult many people and not just from sports. Can't do anything about it because it's "satire", therefore it's accepted.
They will get sued for using those Spanish Federation logos.

I can't wait to read Uncle Toni's response about the French after this? Maybe he will force Nadal to boycott the tournament.
Toni has commented in El País:

Google translate:

Toni Nadal, Rafa's coach and uncle, refused to be taking legal action against the release of the images. "The French can wait forever," he said in reference to a possible case of positive tennis. "There is no chance, zero. If you want to wait, wait. Each act according to his lights. It is curious that not mess much with Rafael and Spanish sport. I think this video is a way of being funny," said Radio Marca. "I have not discussed this issue with Rafa. It is as if we were talking about someone who wants to make funny imitation. The federation has the right to take action, but we will not."

so they go on with this stuff... :?

a skit about the nadal is fine (many other athletes, french or not, received a similar treatement with the 'guignols') but i don't see the point in making such insinuations about spanish athletes in general. it's getting a bit embarrassing... as is the reaction of people making the confusion between this show and french people in general.

LOL. I can see I'm getting moderated the heck out of for very painless posts. It's alright chaps you can cut me some slack.

It's amazing how this thing has blown up, really. Though the show was apparently a comedy show the skit was still pretty outrageous.

No, but the fact that he is a supposed freak of nature in the tennis world combined with his unsportsmanlike conduct against many players at the FO, along with the fact that most of his compatriots in other sports get literally free pardons for abusing PEDs all together make the French hate him.

It is a combination of multiple things. He is not a likable personality, he obviously has no sense of sportsmanship on the court (consistently abuses time rules, injury timeouts, etc.), and is the #1 poster child (maybe 2nd to only Djokovic) for doping investigations in tennis if it were to ever happen.

I am no fan of him or his habits on court, but BS should be called when you see it and this Drug charge is one of them. Drug of abuse for an athlete at his level is a very strong charge, and I dont care about his nationality or what team they are in. I dont know where you come from but no one can be hold responsible or accused base on what their "compatriots" have done or which country they live in. Stereotyping is not what you want to hang on to when accuse people with charges this serious.

Before 1990s China wasnt even participating in swimming competitions and suddenly in 1994 they swiped 4 golds. 11 of the swimmers tested positive for drugs that year. Can we conclude Li Na doped? The first Asian to win a major title coming from no where? At her age? Or maybe since he is cute and lovely on court we can give her a pass?

Nadal isn't white.....he is latino......mild brown....more hazelnut!

There's not a "latino" race.

Latin was the language of the Roman empire though. And I guess you could call "latino" someone who was born in the Latium at the time.

Are you from Canada? Sometimes it seems Atlantic Ocean leads not to another continent but to another entire planet.

I know Latin is different. Isn't there two types of Spanish. Normal Spanish and Latino Spanish....in South America.

Nadal colour is similiar to a Latino and I wasn't saying he was Latino.

No, but you can bet that if suddenly Nadal is doing superhuman acts in tennis, and his compatriots are getting free pardons by the Spanish Federations for doping, that there WILL be suspicions. Period.

The French really hate that the Spanish produce tough match winners and they produce talented losers.

Paul Henry Mathieu is just as talented as the top four, as anyone who follows tennis knows, but chokes. Leconte got to the RG final and choked, Pioline choked against Sampras in two slam finals, Tsonga choked in a final against Djokovic. Gasquet can't get beyond a semi final due to choking. How many times did we see Amelie Mauresmo choke?

Monfils is the best athlete on the tour and too stupid to win at the top level.

The French players get to just as many slam finals as the Spanish (discounting Rafa) but are too mentally weak to close it out. Are the Spanish injecting concentrated confidence into their veins, or is it something else? The French do have a national history of surrendering under pressure do they not? I'm serious by the way.

I don't pay my taxes to have my already useless enough government in pursuit of doping evidence in the international sports events, making a job that international federations should do. There's much more important stuff to do that playing the Sherlock Holmes for ya.

BTW, I don't get your Contador comment. If he took PEDs, let's the racing federation ban him. What exactly do you want the "Spanish institutions" to do and what exactly do you mean by "Spanish institutions"? The literary Cervantes Institute is a Spanish institution.

You do understand that Contador got a free pass from the Spanish Federation for Cycling, and it took two independent parties to appeal said ruling, and another trial to put Contador away right?

And the Spanish institution as in the government. Spanish prosecution are the ones that have all of the Fuentes files, and to this day refuse to cooperate with the WADA regarding those files.

There is a reason even the worst baseball player on a team in the majors makes 2 million per year.

If anyone can find reason in an mediocre baseball player making $2M a year, they sure got to be from texas. Crawford anyone ?

The federation is suing, not Nadal, and French law on these things is no where near as draconian as English law.

It's satire, which means it makes no claims to truth.

it simply uses the conviction of Contador to lampoon satirically certain other famous Spanish stars.

For Nadal to take this seriously would be a huge mistake.

The Spanish Federation is worried that its commercial brand will be damaged, so it maybe has a point.

Toni Nadal, the uncle and coach of Rafael, reacts to a French TV spoof of his nephew that alludes to alleged doping by saying he is clean and that he’ll take no legal action against the station.

"The French can wait forever (for Rafa to test positive)," he told La Marca. "There is no chance, the chance is zero. If they want to wait they can wait. It’s funny that they mess so much with Rafael and Spanish sport. All elite athletes pass the [doping] control tests, it is impossible to cheat. Rafael had 20 and I think some were a surprise, it is difficult to cheat."

Toni Nadal downplayed the significance of the comedy routine of Canal Plus’ show "The Puppets," saying they were just trying to be funny and that it was unimportant. He also said that Canal Plus had issued an apology to distance themselves from the comedy show and that Rafa had not seen it. The Nadals will not take legal action against the station, even though the Spanish Tennis Federation had said it would for using its logo.

It depends entirely on the law (ie its completely arbitrary) where satire ends and defamation begins and I think personally I favour satire, even though this instance of it is not a good usage.

The more I think about it the less likely it seems any litigation will be successful.

There have been so many other high profile individuals in politics, sports and entertainment that were attacked with satirical and even straight up defamatory remarks in the press and media over the years and I can't recall very many seeking and winning lawsuits in similar circumstances.

Uncle Toni's approach to ignore it is probably right.

That's a pertinent comment, unless you happen to be the object of the "satire". If repeated often enough it becomes pop culture and everyone gets used to the idea that Spaniards are all juiced up. If you sue and all their defence is that "it's satire" you might have a chance to contain the damage. If you ignore them you can only hope people will forget about it and go on. Until the satire gets up the following morning.

If Nadal was on something they would have caught him by now.

French Broadcaster must be stupid to try this stunt.....it would have been better to play on Contador than Nadal.

The Spanish Tennis Federatiion is not suing because of the use of Nadal in the skit, they are suing because of use of their logo.

And if Nadal was on something even if he was caught 50 times that info would never see the light of day.

Not sure how W has anything to do with the crazy pay scale in American Baseball......it's just a fact that the worst player on a major league team is making millions......it's a crazy hard skill to hit a ball at the pro level thus they make sick money. I'm not even American and hate baseball but admire the ability to hit.

It's a fact alright, but I think it's screwed up. Reason has nothing to do with it. No ball-hitting skill in the world justifies the kind of money made in sports like baseball or football.

The W pun was in regards to the place listed in your avatar. Don't take it seriously.

Agreed and as much as I hate to admit it that is probably a good thing, in tennis I would say Nadal and Federer are untouchable not only would it hurt the sport but it would trickle down and hurt a lot of innocent people.

Nadal and Federer for sure are protected by all concerned such as the ATP, ITF, Nike and IMG. That is a lot of power to have on your side.

Again says who???? Maybe in the states but your dealing with French cable TV - laws in France and Spain are not the same.......you cannot apply USA standards and attitudes.

The article I read specifically said that the Spanish Tennis Federation objected to the use of their logo and that is why they are suing, that is how I know.

All these "the French hate the Spanish players" post are the most moronic ever. Same for all this the French hate Nadal BS.........not true period.

As for the show that aired on Canal+ IT'S A SATIRE show.......the whole point of the skit and the show is to skew the famous. Trust me Noah and Leconte and even Gasquet were nailed in the past. I'm sure most none of you here have ever heard or read "Le Canard Enchaine" an almost 100 yr old paper that is pure satire - very rough - they nail everyone and everything. Very political and very leftist. But it's part of the French culture.
Nadal has never been supported well by French crowds, or by French media.

That's why I don't think it's good satire. If they had of shown a variety of nationalities it would have been less contentious. As it stands, its just another joke based on ethnic stereotyping.

This is exactly why this kind of satire is such a joke. There have are no rumors regarding Spanish football....

And why involve Pau Gasol:confused:. Perhaps because Spain crushed France in the European Championships:-?.

So it's ok for folks at Saturday Night Live rip into Carter or Ford or Reagan......and Palin most recently. But where it concerns sports stars its not ok? The show Les Guignols has been doing this for YEARS - and trust me French stars get raked over the coals even worse. But because it's Nadal all of a sudden the fanboys come running out screaming slander and the like. Maybe you need to understand the standards are not the same as the U.S. for slander. Jeez the Brits had a similar show back in the day called Splitting Image that did the same thing and they ripped into folks like McEnroe and Conners.......

Palin's act was just an imitation. She really is that stupid.

However if SNL put down Palin as corrupted and repeated this all season they would be in trouble. Exagerating character traits is different than defamation.

That's why people are annoyed. First there was Noah making allegations toward ALL Spanish sports players without proof and now there is this. It's not a standalone act.

L'Equipe also wrote an article on FC Barcelona and doping. After the club sued them it it turned out also this was written without any proof. They had to pay for it.

But it's the various Spanish sports that have been in the news recently.......that's the point.

True. Also in the news, coming from France more than anywhere else, there have been satires or comments (voir Noah) regarding Spaniards.

Outsiders may be tempted to believe the French may actually have some facts as well. If there is something going on - why not present the facts? Suspicions - that we can all come up with.

I personally believe most top players are on some sort of juice, but I don't have any facts on that.
