I will miss Federer--when he has retired.

No, I do not know anything secret or special, but of course we know that one day he will retire.

I will miss the one-handed backhand.
I will miss his "elegance" and stoicism.
I will miss that occasional classic style of play (with lots of net-play when appropriate).
I will miss those forehands with impossible angles.
I will miss his flowingly smooth movement and footwork.

I already miss those god-like performances.

Well, the good news is that you'll have endless hours of high quality video, unlike even Sampras.

Federer will be missed when he retires. Don't we all wish players we have enjoyed watching over the years can maintain their top level and never decline? Beautiful smooth movement. I might enjoy that more than any of his shots. Hopefully it will not be for a while.

For a lot of casual fans, Federer is tennis. It will be a sad day for the sport when he retires.

Yeah, right. Somehow I get the feeling that if he wins another slam soon you'll change your tune very quickly and get back to crapping on his achievements/competition/era.

Of course now when he seems harmless enough(as in nowhere near a slam title) you like his game and you're supposedly gonna miss him.

Fred will un-retire when Nole and Rafa run each other into the ground and the weak era resumes.

This is a transitional strong era with two transitional real champions.

I already "crap" on his competition: one-dimensional bashers who are afraid the net will bite them.

If he wins another slam, then he will have out-dueled his age and earned it. That's why he ranks so very high on my all-time list.

I do/shall not miss his shanks.

Just watched a rerun of Connors beating McEnroe at Wimbledon in 5 sets.

Did Connors have unusually long arms, or is it just the shirt he was wearing? I had never noticed before, but especially when he raises both arms in the air, his arms look, well, long.

Easily getting to the semis of a slam is pretty darn good.

I thought he looked very good in the first set against Nadal.

I don't know about Connors but Pancho Gonzalez, one of his mentors had unusually long arms.

Sad but true....I don't think any one will play the net game or an extreme aggresive game that Federer plays. No more one handed backhand slam winners....or great slice backhand.

All 2 handed topspin or flat drives with heavy loop forehands.

I remember in his prime, Fed would be hitting the ball so early and so close to the line that he sometimes would pluck deep balls out of the air before the bounce to hit it back...a swinging volley from the baseline.

Well said. Unlike Rafa or Djokovic, I will watch Federer play anyone (no matter what their ranking) with great anticipation just to see the great man in action.
I can't summon the same enthusiasm for Rafa or Nole and never will.
A Federer match for me is an "event" and one not to be missed.

Of course he's can win majors. He really only has trouble with two players in majors and only a couple have an outside shot to beat him. He's a tremendous player.

You completely missed my point.

It's not about whether Fed can or cannot win majors at this stage of his career & life (it's guesswork either way, he could have lost to Benneteau in 3d round), rather it's about Hoodjem's (predictable)sharp change in attitude towards Fed when he's back to winning them compared to when he's in a long period without one (and when it appears he might not never win another one).

In short, he likes Fed when he isn't winning **** for 2+ years but as soon as Roger gets another big title Hoodjem starts whining again.

I was surprised, too, Bturner, to see this hostility. But you do see it a lot on this forum (I mean the whole forum), whenever a Slam event is over. Fans of the winner recall old fights they had with fans of other players, and now that they have the upper hand, they want to say how those other fans were wrong, or biased, or hypocritical. When Nadal wins his next Slam, his fans will show up in Federer's fans' faces with the same attitude.

As a Federer fan, I was thrilled to see him win #17 and become #1 again (though I was simultaneously disappointed for Murray -- if you can't understand that, call me hypocritical if you wish). But I don't know, maybe I should take a cue from this thread and point some fingers at non-Federer fans.

I admit that I didn't expect Fed to win another major. But, I did think that if he was to win another, it would be at Wimbledon. Grass is more forgiving over a 2 week event. And the lower bounce of grass is more accomodating to Fed's Eastern forehand grip than Djoko's and Nadal's near full Western grips.

If you think about it many greats get that last hurrah major, when even they barely expected it Martina. Steffi and Monica got one, Sampras and Agassi got theirs.

I somehow suspect this is the last hurrah for both Serena and Roger.

I was maybe 70% confident that he'd win another major. What's really astonishing is that he's #1 again, at 30 (I know a lot of people have made that comment, but still).

Yes at Wimbledon I figured he would always have a great shot. Also on the DecoTurf at Flushing -- though that was more up in the air, in my mind, because everyone plays great on hard court these days.

Federer's net stats in the final were another great surprise. I was stunned. He's been hanging back for years now, so for him to come in 68 times over the course of four sets, and win 53 of them -- well let's just say I was 100% surprised. And the way he pulled off some of those volleys. It was just great to see. Great grasscourt tennis -- nice to see Wimbledon won that way, not just by diehard baselining.

Federer also played great indoor tennis, under the roof. Under those conditions is when he's really best at disrupting the rhythm of Djokovic or Nadal.

Laver said this week that Federer's win was surprising and that only Nadal, in good form, could have beaten him. I agree Nadal, on paper, is the best candidate to beat Federer. But I really wonder how a Nadal-Federer match would have played out under the roof, considering Nadal's poor record indoors vs. Federer.

I expected him to win another major also. Outside of Nadal and Djokovic, Federer has shown the he usually beats anyone else in a major and he's capable of beating them in a major also. So you figure that if at least one is upset he has a good shot to win a major.

Enjoy him why he last, dudes. He is almost 31 which is ancient in men's pro tennis. They are not long, the days of wine and roses..........

It is sort of a shame the best of the best in tennis is normally washed up by 30. Fed is the exception to the rule; yet another plank in his GOAT platform. But, that is the nature of men's singles which is so very speed based.

Are you people purposely misinterpretating the point I'm trying to make?

I repeat once again, this has nothing to do with whether Hoodjem (or anyone else) thought Fed was gonna win another major or not, those who thought he wouldn't have, had perfectly valid reasons for believing so and were within a hair of being proven right about this Wimbledon as well given that as I said Fed could have easily lost in the 3d round to Julien.

I myself thought that Fed would never win another Wimbledon again and that #17 had the best chance of happening at USO (if it ever did happen) and I certainly never envisioned him getting back to #1 at this stage of his career.

My point was about Hoodjem's completely different attitude toward Fed depending on whether Fed is winning majors or not and nothing else, if you can't spot the difference that's fine but don't make this to be about something that it is not.

I'm a longtime Fed fan but I would have been perfectly fine had Murray won the match because:

-Murray finally winning his first major in front of a home crowd with Lendl (who failed in his quest to capture Wimbledon) in his corner would have made up for a great tennis story.

-It would break the monotony of having 3 players win almost every major there is for nearly a decade, I prefer parity, as far as I'm concerned Murray (or Tsonga, or some young gun etc.) winning a major would have been good for the game.

However, I still see this as a step forward Murray because this time around he competed well, was playing aggressive and made his major final opponent earn it instead of freezing up mentally like he did in his other major finals.

Well one can't deny that Fed doesn't get much(if any) love in this forum, the "Laver Forum". I don't know how he'll be miss by some folks when they have hard time giving him credit plus minimize his achievements just to put him lower than their idol(e.g. laver, rosewall, etc.). Frankly, I think they don't miss Roger winning, and hope that he doesn't.

Oh we got it, you changed the focus of this thread from a Federer thread, to a Hoodjem's 'attitude' towards Federer thread. That is when the hostility began to seep in to which we refer. It became about TF politics right then rather than Fed. There was tons of directions you could have gone instead. Just seemed silly to me.

Now back to Hood's OP, If Roger could have found an effective end game vs Nadal on slower courts , think of where that rivalry would have gone. More of those matches would have gone down in history as the sports best shotmaking duels. As it was I wonder why that divided surface exhibition ( half the court was grass, the other clay ) was not made a yearly event, looked like a fun premise for lots of combinations. Had anyone thought of it before, we could have had some fascinating matches w/ Borg/ Mac, Evert / Navratilova, or Connors/ Vilas.

I will miss Federer too , just like I missed Sampras around 2002-2005 then Fed became Fed & I still miss Sampras's clutch play , his serve .... Probaby a player's greatest achievement is that he can appeal to his fans even after they are long gone - the weeks at no.1 or how many slams just don't matter - I miss Safin as well , but I WILL DEARLY MISS FEDERER mostly because I don't see myself watching idiotic baseliners slug it out for nearly 5-hrs in Finals ( I Like love Rafa .... ) but yes that grace on court by Fed also the variety - just the guy is such a superb athelete - he made me watch Tennis more. I will miss him & hope to dear god that he plays for atleast another 2-yrs caz I'm not ready to give up tennis yet.

It's very strange to think of the grass courts of Wimbledon as an indoor venue. I suppose that's what it was, but, I don't think it had much to do with Federer's win. Federer's game is the most amenable to grass among the championship level competitors today. The only things that I can think of that would prevent him from winning there are his mental focus and his physical conditioning.

You gotta say, this Federer is one opportunistic frakker. 2009 RG and now 2012 Wimbledon.

When you are as consistent in reaching the semis at majors as he hqs been over a decade, your first success is to make your opportunity to be opportunistic over and over again. Luck has little to do with it.
