Yes, but the bowing is different too. In Thailand, it is polite way to say hello or goodby. It's everyday custom between people.
Thailand is constitutional monarchy, same as United Kingdom. Thai people love king, and treat him as a father. It is nice to know something about other country (culture) when you go there.
oooops ... not exactly ...
it's not about bowing to people as a form of greeting or acknowledgment.
it's about the "cult of personality" that proves the drastic difference between gasquet's bow to the king/god Rama IX and the polite buddhist bow of greeting ...
maybe it once, somewhere in history, was "same as United Kingdom," but that is not the case now. For example, the Queen of England pays taxes ... the King of Thailand does not pay taxes. Just one small difference.
The Thai monarchy (Chakri Dynasty has ruled since 1782) has a lot more cultural power than does the House of Windsor (founded by King George V in 1917).
Can't you see the difference between the two bows? One is to a person. The other is to an image. One is to a monarch. The other is to a god. In fact, was there ever a UK monarch who was culturally regarded as "god," in the same way the Thai king is? Big difference, despite the fact they're both called "constitutional monarchies."
