Beijing has Djokovic, Ferrer, and Tsonga. Nadal was scheduled to play but obviously can't. The ladies are also around so I'm sure there'll be plenty of whining when their matches go long.

Tokyo has Murray, Berdych, and Tipsarevic. Not to shabby of a tournament either.

WTF and YEC spots are on the line. Djokovic winning Beijing would also make it very difficult for Fed to end the year at #1. We'll see.

The ATP Race in case anyone is interested. I'm not sure why Djokovic doesn't have his upcoming tournament listed.

Both of these tournaments have very good participants for a 500. I think the Tokyo tournament will be more interesting though, because there's a bigger potential for an upset with Berdych and Raonic playing. And maybe even Tipsarevic and Wawrinka, they are decent hard court players.

I think Djokovic is going to win Beijing. Don't know who is going to stand in his way. Ferrer and Tsonga have a small chance of taking him out.

Murray is defending the Tokyo title. He bageled Nadal in the final last year, continuing Nadal's streak of never defending a hard court title.

The cherrypicking in this post was inspired by NSK v.130

Interesting match ups : Tokyo Open

Tipsarevic vs Simon.........just recently met in Bangkok Semis.

Nishikori vs Soeda.......the top 2 from Japan squaring it off in the first
. round. That's a bit cruel for the Japannese.

Who scalps Murray?
Berdych doesn't really have much of a problem beating Murray when there is no typhoon in the area. Also, Murray can be vulnerable to an early upset in his usual post-big-final malaise.

I see Berdych as a clear favourite, though Murray obviously also has a chance to win it too.

Don't recall any typhoon when Murray straight-setted him in Dubai this year?

Also, Murray can be vulnerable to an early upset in his usual post-big-final malaise.

That's often been true although his previous post Slam malaises have followed defeats. This will be the first time he has played after winning a Slam. No doubt he will be a bit rusty and he is often a slow starter at the best of times but he should hardly be in a malaise on this occasion, should he?

Well obviously.

Well, he got straight-setted by Chardy after winning the Olympics, so it may happen after winning a slam too. No way to know really. Monfils isn't an ideal first round opponent either.

Asia might be the exception. After losing in the semis of the USO last year, Murray then won 3 tournaments in a row on the Asian swing: Bangkok, Tokyo and Shanghai. If he could that after losing at the USO, you can't help but wonder what he could do after winning it? Guess, we'll soon find out.

I thought this too; more potential up and comers seem to be in the Tokyo draw.
Not to speak of which, Ferru seems to have gotten the more experienced Spaniards in his half, while Novak got all comparative newbies.

Maybe it'll be windy. :)

What happened to Cilic? Losing to the #221 player, after having been a set and a break up, seriously?

Beijing: Tsonga beats Istomin 4-6 6-1 7-6(3)
He played very good at the end and hit a 155 kmh forehand winner at 4-3 in the tiebreak.

So this means it's been two full years since a title off of clay for Nadal?

I see Tastuma Ito beat Nicolas Almagro, good job. He's not doing too bad at the moment. Ranked #66 at 24 years old.

And Ferrer is out? He apparently retired against Lu. Does anyone know what happened? Must have been an injury.

Only 4 of 8 seeds survived the 1st round of the China Open:

(1) N. Djokovic

(3) J. Tsonga

(5) R. Gasquet

(6) A. Dolgopolov

Ferrer, Cilic, Haas and Verdasco are all out. I'm hoping for a Djokovic-Gasquet semifinal and Tsonga-Querrey in the other semifinal.

I heard he called the trainer and was looking nauseous, poor thing, but I didn't hear what the nature of the actual injury might have been.

He's had a long season ... US Open semis, Davis Cup semis ... when he got knocked out by Benneteau at the last tournament -- even though Benneteau is good, and was hungry, I didn't think Ferru would last long here.

:-(

That's an interesting point you make when trying to make a case for Berdych. Who is after all very well known for his consistency and not losing to random, lower ranked players as opposed to Murray.

Djokovic doing fine.

Well, if he wasn't, it would really be ridiculous.

Because now that Ferru is out, other than Sasha, who is always streaky in part b/c of his health, he doesn't really have any real opponents left, does he?

You know, there's that guy, I don't remember his name, I think he might have beaten Djokovic at the AO a few years ago. ;)

Lets admit it. Berloq's confidence is all time low after he blew the Davis cup final against Berdych for his country. Had he won that match, i would have picked Berloq to upset Novak today

I watched belocq's match in davis cup and he has the most annoying grunt ever (maybe he ties with granollers). I missed the djokovic match today but was his grunting like that as well?

Back on topic I think Djokovic and Murray will win their respective tournaments. Djokovic does have alot to gain in this asian swing and for the rest of the season. I just wish i could watch some matches but the time zone difference and other commitments are preventing me from watching them

Hope the winner of Murray/Wawrinka takes the title. As for Beijing, will Gasquet 2.0 emerge as the champion? It would be nice, but can't see past Nole 1.5.

Wawrinka can take it to Murray, who has trouble against single-handers. Even Gasquet 3.0 would lose to Nole 1.5 though.
