Best tension holding poly main?

Hey all,


Throughout the winter I'm looking at trying to replace my PHT/Gosen hybrid with something new for match ready sticks! So I'll need some of your help, I don't know too too much about the poly/syngut combos and what people are using these days.

Pro's of my set:

-Softer feel off the bed
-Decent pop with solid spin
-Lasts up to 10 hours of hitting (ideal range)
-Doesn't bother my arm one bit

Cons:

-Price, PHT is pretty expensive here and I can't order Babolat any more!


So yeah, basically the only downside is the price. I'm looking for a solid tension holding poly that's a "comfortable" for up to 10 hours in the mains provided they don't pop before that. Stringing them up in a Youtek Rad Pro. I'd prefer a poly that dies into more of the "springy / mushy" death, rather then the "hard as steel" death.

Thanks everyone! The only brands I cannot order are Head/Babolat. Any suggestions from possibly Tourna / Weisscannon / Volkl that might fit my bill?

I would try Black code 17, My favorite string and really holds tension well. I used to use RPM 17 but did not like how after a couple days of hitting the tension was so loose I could not stand it. Or like I said in the other post 4G is very good at holding tension too.

I'll definitely have to try Black Code out. I'd love to use 4G but reels of it are bloody expensive!

I'd try out b5e, though it does die more of the hardening death than the springy death. It will last your 10 hours though. One of the strings I'm really digging right now is SPPP Hex, but the regular is good too (so long as you don't mind the orange :)).

I don't know about cyclone, as its tension maintenance left much to be desired for me. While a pretty good string at first, focus hex does die the hardening death. I've heard great things about iontec but still haven't tried it, and definitely I suggest trying the b5e.

They all lasted a couple of hours better for me as a hybrid.

The Iontec Black continues to impress, it dosn't notch very quickly and doesn't stiffen up.....Plays very well and at a fantastic price.

Prince beast xp have best tension stability from polys i have tried by far.
SP Hyperion is second.

^^^ Very good, but still not as good as the Poly Plasma variants. I do prefer Tornado, however. Truth be told, you'll be hard pressed to beat Signum Pro in any of their lines as far as tension stability goes.

I read about SPPP, and it seems to fit the bill, but the only issues I've read are the constant breaking while stringing? What's up with that?

Also, I'm playing indoor all winter, where it floats at around 30 Celsius, so it's definitely hot and humid conditions.

Fuji, I own reels of both SPPP and SPPHex, and I've never broken a set. It seems to be a batch that was sent out at one point.

That's reassuring to hear! I'm looking at getting a reel, so far it seems like SPPP really hits all the right notes for me. Tension stability, really low cost, and everything else seems to be "above average" which works well for me.

Quick question also, what is the most efficient syn gut cross for comfort? I've used Gosen for a while, and while I find it pretty comfortable, I've been wondering if there is another syn gut that does the job better for poly/syn hybrids?

just playing with you man. lux is bad for tension. recently though I have been playing with babolat revenge. it is pretty decent with tension. It is also a very nice price right now at tw.

Babolat N.Vy is pretty decent, but you can't get Babolat anymore :D haha

Same here..I tried SPPP with Gosen....for some reason Gosen strings feel not right for me with SPPP..My next try is with TNT2 as a cross..I think that might be a good hybrid combo although TNT2 is not a cheap string.. Also I usually dont like full bed polyester but Gamma Zo Verve made me change my mind..but still would prefer to hybrid with syngut for $$$..Zo Verve is not as cheap as SPPP but has more power, feels better in the arm and holds tension as good as SPPP.

If you're going with SPPP, I have a few comments. I have a reel of 1.23.

First - excellent tension maintenance, as others have said.
Second - not sure what you're looking for, but SPPP is sort of a "jack of all trades" string, not really strong at anything in particular.
Third - if you find you have too much pop or stiffness with the string hybriding with Gosen, or that you keep them in too long (yes, they are poly, they do die), try a multi. I hybrid SPPP with Dunlop Hexy Fiber 16, and it really softens the stringbed. It also breaks, so I have to string on a proper schedule.
Fourth - the first sets of SPPP I bought, I had one snap on the frame during play and another snap on the stringer. I have a reel of the same string, and I've never had that problem with it, so I believe in the "bad batch" theory.

Enjoy. It's a nice string to hybrid. I have a love/hate relationship with strings, but to be honest I haven't found anything better and I have experimented with everything TW sells in that price range. I don't think you can go wrong with SPPP.

I am tring hybrid SPPP vs TNT2 as well. I am currently using full bed SPPP at 54lb.

Thanks for the reply! Durability isnt a huge concern with me, but I enjoy strings I'm able to milk 8 hours of good play with that dont break, 10 hours is awesome if the last few are just practice sticks.

Is there another syngut that you would recommend over gosen? I find it plays pretty soft and is actually "durable" in that most poly Doesnt eat it alive in a few hours.

Quick question for anyone who can answer!

My coach is recommending I try BHBR16 instead of SPPP, as it offered "better playability" for the amount of time it lasts for me. 8-10 hours, anyone who has tried both would you be willing to comment on how they compare in playability?

Thanks very much for sharing. I have a reel of SPPP as well. I kinda hate it at higher tensions such as 56lb and 57lb since lack of power. I found 54lb works for me. And I am starting trying to hybrid SPPP with other strings.

Try AlphaGut2000 as a cross. Softer than synguts, better string than TNT2 IMO, more comfortable and better performance, and doesn't cost much more than syngut.
Full bed durability isn't great, but as a cross will last longer than it takes for the poly to die.

You are welcome. My main problem with Gosen OGSM is that it lasts a bit longer as a cross than I'd like, and I often play it past the point of arm-friendliness. That's why I went the multi route.

I'd seriously give a multi cross a try. There are relatively low cost options, like the Dunlop string I use, and they will keep you honest as well as providing a softer feel than synthetics overall.

As for BHBR, my experience is mostly with BHSR, which I found I had to string a little higher because it's higher powered than SPPP. When strung 2 lbs higher, it had fine performance. I haven't played with BHBR, but from memory the reason I avoided it is that like Cyberblue, it is a little softer and higher powered. I'm trying to avoid stringing higher, and honestly I get all the playability I need out of SPPP without having to...

Forten Sweet16 and regular Gamma Syngut 16 both work well as crosses.
I find that the OGSM17 pairs well with the BHBR17.
I haven't used the BHBR16.

You can probably toss TF RedCode and Solinco Outlast into the good tension maintenance mix as well.

I'm actually going to toss in my vote to prince beast XP as well. It really does last quite a long while. It plays well too, but the main downside that it probably doesnt stand out at anything other then tension maintenance at it's price range.
