Has any athlete ever dominated a sports event more than Nadal?

If he won in such a horrible physical condition with Djoko being at his best means only one thing: Nadal is using PED's and him winning has nothing to do with proper tennis

Weird how that horrible physical condition didn't come out until after wimbledon, and weird that he was running around like a rabbit during the FO.

Actually you'll find Rafa won most of his slams in intense pain. He's spoken about it regularly. He said he enjoys the pain and its challenge. 2009 Australin Open is the best example. He was still in shreds from 2008. But in 2012 it was announced by Uncle Toni that there will be 'no more bandaid solutions'. That means no more playing in pain. If Rafa used the old approach he would have played the Olympics and the US Open this year. Now he is planning on 2016, so he knows he can't afford to play in pain. He'll play Roland Garros at 100% in 2013, because he won't take unnecessary risks at Miami.

Let's get this straight. Nadal dominated the clay season, that is it! He never dominated tennis like Roger Federer. You can't dominate the sport when you haven't won a non-clay title for 2 years, and never defended a non-clay event in his entire career. And he only ranked 100 weeks at #1.

The OP is hyping Nadal.

52-1 at Roland Garros. Federer is not even close at any of his best slams. Not even close.

Probably because he doesn't skip every third major.

Are you comparing Nadal at Roland Garros to Federer at Wimbledon?

Nadal never skipped Roland Garros, except for 2004 when he broke his foot.

Federer lost in the 1st Round of Wimbledon 3 times. That's his problem.

Nadal 7 RG finals.
Fed 8 W finals.

Until Nadal makes another final, then they are equal.

No question Nadal owns the clay, but Federer owns the grass and hard court.

Didn't Fed win AO one year w/o dropping a set? Which one I don't remember. In any case, all that claims that Rafa will win not only next year FO but many others are simply...laughable, to say the least.
Take a good look at Rafa now. The guy is 26 year old, and has hobbled on one leg the last 2 years if not longer. I don't give a damn if he only plays on clay from now on. He may as well play on water, his knees will still be his undoing...soon. Too bad, I like him as a player.
Second, Djoker and now Murray will give Rafa a good run for his money in the next FO. I'm not even betting on the next FO, make it less the next 5 FOs!!!

Losing 3 times in the first round as a young pro is a real problem with you have one the most prestigious tournament a record 7 times (tied with Pete)
Where is the double face palm for the stupidity of this post?

Michael Jordan went six for six in the Finals of the NBA. Nadal has gone seven for seven when making it to the Finals of Roland Garros. IMO Jordan's record is the only one that compares in terms of sheer domination (assuming that the 90s was just as competitive as the 80s and the current era).

Again, that's only clay which I agree. Next time refer Nadal to clay, not tennis as a whole.

Capiche ?

This thread is about Nadal at an EVENT. Has any athlete ever dominated a sports EVENT more than Nadal? Did I have to spell out the name of the event?

Capiche?

Federer has lost an awful lot of matches at Wimbledon. Including the 1st Round, 3 times. And more recently he lost in TWO quarter-finals. That's not domination by Rafael Nadal standards. It's a mess.

Except for Armstrong who doping issues aside had to rely on an entire team working for him to win all those titles I agree with your other choices.

Nadal at the French is definitely the most dominant tennis player ever at any of the slams apart from Court at the Australian Open back when it was a fraud slam.

Allison Fischer in billiards. I believe a 22 time World Champion or #1 for a year in some form of snooker, 8 ball, 9 ball, she was amazing. Well if you consider billiards a sport that is. Her nickname was Dutchess of Doom. She could intimidate by her eyes alone. Often when she got up to the table she could run racks in a row and you might not even get to play.

It's not just the 3 times in first round. Fed has lost 7 times total at Wimbledon, some of them recently and to 7 different players. Absolutely no way you can compare that to Nadal's domination of RG (7 titles for 1 defeat) since his teenage years.

Looks like this thread is an annual event for the OP.

I'll reiterate my thoughts on the subject posted previously

122 races — Edwin Moses (400m hurdles)
75 races — Emil Zatopek (long distance running)
4 consecutive Olympic titles - Al Oerter (discus throw)
65 consecutive competitions - Carl Lewis (long jump)
140 to 150 competitions — Iolanda Balaş (high jump)
90 — Julio César Chávez (light welterweight boxing)
103 — Jimmy Wilde (flyweight boxing)
93 — Pedro Carrasco (lightweight boxing)
91 — Sugar Ray Robinson (middleweight boxing)

187 consecutive matches including 1964 Tokyo Olympics — Osamu Watanabe (Greco-Roman wrestling)
Note: The only modern Olympian to go unbeaten throughout his entire career.

13 years including 3 consecutive Olympics titles (1988–1996) — Alexander Karelin (Greco-Roman wrestling)

555 matches — Jahangir Khan (squash)

418 matches — Esther Vergeer (wheelchair tennis)
Streak started January 30, 2003

and Saori Yoshida, a female Japanese wrestler who has lost 1 match in 9 years

Yes Nadal is exceptionally talented. His reign at RG is one of the most spectaular career performanes in world sport. In terms of dominance however it is not unique and I have shown just a small sample of other athletes' dominance in their respective fields.

Also weird that despite that horrible physical condition he was slated to play both doubles and singles at Halle following FO.

Yep we should only count federer's desperate quarter-final achievements....
Humm, a bit of bitterness and sarcasm there, I see.
Someone else mentioned Lance Armstrong? Did he just step down from his chairmanship of his cancer foundation? I'd worry about any comparison between Rafa and Armstrong given how the latter fared lately.

Yes, Babe Ruth may be the greatest athlete ever compared to his contemporaries. My father did an analysis of the number of home runs he hit versus what all the other players in the league hit at that time. It is staggering how much better he was than everyone else. It would be like one player hitting 150 or so home runs these days.
Not only that, he was possibly the best pitcher in the league, too.

There is also one lady most people here don't know about, that is Deng Yaping (table tennis).

Deng won three world championships in singles and doubles, four olympic gold medals (two singles/two doubles), as well as the world cup. She was ranked no.1 for 8 straight years, and retired by the age of 24. She is essentially the Borg of table tennis.

If only Rafa could last the entire year every year the way Roger Fedoper does at age 31, then you might have a "case" (I use that term very loosely).

You basically answered to the OP with your own answer then.
And if you refer to FO as the SINGLE EVENT that Rafa dominated, then let's just not forget that Fed made it to the final of the FO also 6 times. He only won 1 just because Rafa was in his way. Only Rafa, not any other player. The same can't be said about Rafa vs Fed in any other GS: Wimby, USO, or AO, or even WTF. At least not with the same numbers.

The problem with Fedoper at Wimbledon is he lost in the first round 3 times, and in 2010 and 2011 he lost in the QFs. Fedoper has needed to participate in 14 Wimbledons for his 7 titles. Whereas Nadal has only needed to play Roland Garros 8 times to win 7 of them. The comparison is like night and day. As far opposite as 7 titles can get.

Not only that, Nadal only dropped ONE set this year at Roland Garros. A good chance he won't drop any sets in 2013 with a fresh frame. Fedoper isn't even in the picture as far as domination of a singular event goes.

if that's how you feel, but he did dominate the tour for a number of years, only losing 4/5 matches in a year on a few occasions. I agree with you about rafa his success at roland garros is unparalleled no one will be that dominate at a slam.
