what happened to safin in 06 and beyond?

He was world class in the early 2000s then had a little slump and came back in 05 when he beat fed in the AO.

but what happened after 05? he was still only 25/26 or so and was pretty much an average player till the end from then for several years(ranked between 25-80).

what happened?

Safin's defeat to the world no. 512 Wesley Whitehouse at Indianapolis in 2006 was a particular low-point. His 2nd round victory over Nalbandian at the US Open a month later was very entertaining though.

Gonzalez was a big nemesis for him that year, beating him 3 times in a short space of time at RG, Wimbledon (when Safin was leading by 2 sets to love) and LA.

Really injuries mostly. After fighting back from major injuries and missing a whole year more than once it is natural you lose motivation too, especialy when you were one who struggled with mixing your tennis and mental commitment to partying, women, and off court life too even at the best of times.

I was at that Safin Nalby match. Really great match the crowd got behind both players. Very entertaining.

Regarding the question, I think that he just didn't have the same motivation. I don't think he believed either that he could beat players like Fed or Rafa in the majors anymore.

safin had a knee injury in the second half of 05 and was never able to move that well afterwards. if you look at his matches later one, very often he'd miss because he couldn't set up properly and still wanted to take a big rip at the ball, especially on the forehand side.

His FH got much worse after 2006 or so. I'm not sure it's entirely related to poor movement, often he'd miss easy shots where he was in position. I remember matches shortly before his retirement where he couldn't be trusted to put 2 consecutive FHs in the court, it was really bad. Seemed like he was opening up his hip prematurely, I wonder whether it was injury related.
