Fed fans, here's one plus

Djokovic winning this title the way he did, shows how much he wanted to win the WTF. Paris he couldn't care less about, but this week he came in pumped, ready to do battle, beating Murray, Berdych, Tsonga, Del Potro and Federer to do it.

This was not like last year where he was out of gas and looked disinterested, this was big time.

Federer has had great wins too, not least 2010, beating Ferrer, Soderling, Murray, Djokovic and Nadal with the loss of one set. But too long people have acted like Federer is the only player who cares about the WTF and they've insulted it by calling it an exhibition etc.

With Djokovic winning this you can see it's a big event that the top players value. It's actually great to see, and it was a great final.

As a Fred fan, I am very disappointed. He obviously wanted to win something badly before retirement. Djokovic just showed up for the endorsement fee, but cruised through anyway because of superior talent.

Yes, funny how he managed to lose from 6-0,2-0 up to Querrey in the early rounds of Paris and just a week later proceeded to go on a tear in London beating everyone in sight! ;)

This was not like last year where he was out of gas and looked disinterested, this was big time.

This time last year he was well and truly spent after terrorising the entire ATP tour for the best part of the year. This year, he paced himself much better, winning here and there and losing a little here and there and leaving enough in the tank to be able to run amok 2011 style in London.

Federer has had great wins too, not least 2010, beating Ferrer, Soderling, Murray, Djokovic and Nadal with the loss of one set. But too long people have acted like Federer is the only player who cares about the WTF and they've insulted it by calling it an exhibition etc.

Federer remains the undisputed King of the WTF for present day players. He nearly always plays some of his best tennis there. He always makes sure he has reserved enough fuel to do well there. He has been a finalist in London now for the third year on the trot!

With Djokovic winning this you can see it's a big event that the top players value. It's actually great to see, and it was a great final.

Of course, it won't ever become a truly great tournament until Nadal and Murray win it! ;)

I was under the impression that you supported Gabashvili. Was I wrong in assuming this?

Teimuraz is obviously a very talented player and I support him with all my heart. Glad to see you have finally figured out how to spell his name.

I agree Taymuraz is very popular and talented. I am not sure about his marketability though.

So,basically this is a Djokovic appreciation thread, not that there's anything wrong with that, just that there's a few lying around already.

the world tour finals has a proper identity after 40 years of name changes and even it used to be played at the start of the next year :confused:..

for instance if you didnt know...mcenroe got his 1984 mega season started in january by winning the masters cup, as then called..for the previous year 1983.. :-?

What utter patronizing drivel which does a disservice to Federer, his fans and the legacy of the Masters Cup/WTF. What people? Being an ignorant lout/troll doesn't automatically make one's ******** opinions universally valid. The tournament did not need Djokovic's "blessing" to elevate it's already highly esteemed (and second in stature to the Slams) status. Your post is merely an excuse to satiate your urge for Djokovician fanboyism.

He's a Federer fan too. A legitimate one at that. All he's trying to say is that there are too many people that downplay the WTF wrongly so, and mostly because Nadal hasn't won it, so even in Fed's loss today, it was proven that the WTF is a big deal because Djokovic obviously wanted it badly.

Too many people -- who? Non-Federer fans? What utter tripe! Djokovic's win has no affect the prestige of the tournament in one way or the other. It has always been and will always be highly regarded in the annals of tennis history by people who matter.

well Fed shouldve had this match really! two set points! was up a break in the first shouldve had it

Fed is too inconsistent in rallies. Too many UEs and Djoko played the angles really well. Fed would have had to serve out of his mind to win a match like this one. He did it for the first few games but couldn't maintain it.

As always, he screwed around too much at 5-3 on Novak's serve. He figured he's try to get cute and intimidate to win 6-3 and if that didn't work, he'd have an easy hold for 6-4. Well, that didn't go as planned... as it always goes against Novak when he's getting to every ball.

@Towser, not that I'm not glad for Novak (I'm certainly cool with him winning) but tennis didn't start with Nadal, Novak and Murray, seriously at times on this forum you'd get the impression that those 3 each have double the slams/overall career that Fed has or something while in reality he still has as many slams as them combined.

WTF/YEC has a rich history (at one point it was regarded as almost on par with the 3 of the slams and higher than AO actually), it is a year end show down between the elite that has been valued highly by every all-time tennis great basically, it doesn't need Novak's "seal of approval" to prove its worth (that it's a "serious event" valued by top players, I knew that before Novak even became a pro).

As for people who are claiming this event is an exo or the equivalent to a 250/500 tourney, well I sincerely doubt this changed anything for their ilk, afterall Nadal still hasn't won it (yet) and they can't really see past him so...

This post shows how little you know about the game. Fed served in this whole tourney way below his standards, and his serve failed him on this final. Both men pushed each other in the rallies but Fed was the one bossing Djokovic around the court more often, at least until Fed's BH broke down. Fed's FH wroked really well most of the match (except for the very end of it where he just rushed it hoping to hit winners), and Nole made quite a lot of big rally UE himself.

Don't forget it was Fed that initially dominated this match, in both sets, and at the end HE is the one to hand it over, Nole just kind of stuck around and letting Fed self destruct. And still Fed managed to make it extremely competitive with a very weak serve and percantage.

Well, surely Nadal can't be destroyed 6-3 6-0 at an event that counts, right?

Federer playe a really good match yesterday, can't really fault him for his baseline game (a few UE's are to be expected, especially when you're attacking all the time against a defender of Djokovic's caliber). In fact, he was really great in that department (footwork was pretty solid, too). However, I agree that his serve let him down big time. It was iffy all week, and awful in patches yesterday (one first serve only out of the six points played in the game where he was broken back in the first). With his "usual" indoor srving, a straight-set win was in the cards. Oh well, that's life. Pretty good match to end a great year for the men's tour, though. :)

Now that Novak won the tourney (for the 2nd time) Becker and Sampras must now truly realize the importance of this match they played:

Imagine if Murray wins it next year (or *gasp* Nadal) it will become a legendary tourney.

True, but imagine the horror if Ferrer, Berdych, or Del Potro win it, this will become even less significant than before. Maybe we should all root for Nadal next year just for the sake of the event to become not totally worthless

Well, Del Potro and Berdych became honorary members of the strong era in 2009 and 2010 respectively (when they beat Fed in a slam) but still you're right, we need Nadal wining the title to make this event legit (it still wouldn't even be close to Monte Carlo but maybe on the prestige level of Barcelona).

The value of the WTF is very well known. No need to wait for someone to win it, in order to elevate its status.

But, try that: Fed fans, here is one plus. Federer played good tennis throughout the tourney (including the final) and bowed down to the #1 in the world and only just.

I, for one, enjoyed it very much.

This is actually a good point because Novak has a tendency to just linger in a match where he's being outgunned in the beginning. It's almost as if he lets you get overconfident and then turn it around when you think you're at the end and about to close it out. He's basically come up with what Tennis should characterize as the Novak Rope-A-Dope. It's an annoying concept for players who play against him and can really mess with your mind.

He also bowed down to Delpo actually but yes that was a good showing in one of his favorite events.

one final and and victory in both his big favourite events plus another final in his hometown event and a third final in another important tournament this year.

you know what? I'd definitely subscribe this for the next year! doesn't sound too bad to me.
