Ask me anything about being a professional tennis player

Wow. Awesome to have a real player on this board and that too a slam winner. Congratulations on winning junior Wimbledon and US Open and reaching finals of Australian and French.

I have a few questions:
- In the slams, do you guys share the same dressing room/environment as the top players. Or is theirs a different world.

- How tough do you feel is to break the top 100 or top 50 at pro-level

- Is prize money enough to sustain all you expenses and coach. Does ITF tournaments pay for travel and hotel.

Thanks

Thanks for all the insight on the tour life - this thread is a very good read

congrats on your results in mexico - best of luck on the next tournament Filip

Did Lucas just win back to back challenger events? he must be building some confidence as well
No worries. No they were just 10k futures.

do you think the gap between the top juniors and the top100 has become larger?

5-10 years ago we had 17yo kids like nadal or becker beating the top guys. usually by age 19 most top players were in the top50.

so it would usually take 1-2 years after the last jr. season to make the 100. but to date non of the 2010 to 2012 guys has made the top100 (the highest is sock around 150). and even if you extend to 09 there is only 1 junior winner making the top100 (tomic). that is 3 years and only 1 made it.

why are juniors taking so much longer to get to even borderline world class (top100)? is it because the competition is harder?

Davis Cup is coming back to your hometown for the second year in a row! Do you know whether you're going to be part of it? I would have to assume that it will still be Pospisil in as #2 singles, but will you be on the practice roster?

This is from an article on tsn.ca on Nov 20 about Davis Cup.

Martin Laurendeau:

Laurendeau feels the opportunity to play at home again with more experience under their sneakers will help make his players more competitive. In addition to core players Raonic, Pospisil and Nestor, the captain plans to deploy Filip Peliwo of North Vancouver, currently the world's top-ranked junior, somehow.

He clearly lacks the experience to go against the world's best on the sport's top level. But Laurendeau said it's important to include Peliwo, who trained with the squad last February in Vancouver and during the September win over South Africa in Montreal.

Great news. Way to go, filip.

Another question, which may have been asked, but I'll drop it anyway.

Do you have any sort of career plan? Say, what kind of goals do you have for next year, and the year thereafter, when do you need to start making a profit, when do you expect yourself to break the top 200/top 100? Do you have any sort of goal that you see as realistic right now (e.g. top 50; top 20; top 10; to win a/your favourite grandslam?

Would be cool if you could share.

Also: What does your calendar for next year look like?

Thanks and have a good off season :)

I think the game is much more physical, as well as there being a lot more depth in the top 100, now than it has ever been, so it is taking a lot longer for players' games and bodies to mature. That is the main reason in my opinion.

Hello just wondering if you follow women's tennis? If you do follow women's tennis who are your favourite female players?
I don't really follow the womens' tour that much, at least not compared to how much I follow the mens' tour. I like Radwanska, as she is Polish and is really crafty :)

I'm quite sure I will be there as a practice partner.

We generally don't share the same areas/dressing rooms as the pros. (exceptions, Suzanne Lenglen locker rooms at French, US Open players' lounge, (Wimbledon Aorangi/Practice court lockers)

At the moment it is very difficult to break the top100, and even more so for the top50, although it is certainly achievable.

Prize money alone is not usually enough to sustain a player's expenses. That is where endorsements, outsides sponsors, and federation support comes in. Many players do not have that kind of support, so they struggle to break even financially.

Well, I try to take it year by year, but the ultimate goal is to be the best in the world and win slams.

I would like to be around top 250/200 by the end of next year, and playing slams on a regular basis in around 3 years.

If I had to choose one slam to win, it would probably be Wimbledon.

As far as next year goes, I am playing some Futures in Florida in January, followed by Davis Cup against Spain. I'm not sure what position I will be in there, but it will most likely be as a practice partner, possibly playing a dead-rubber match after the tie has been decided. I don't know yet.

As for the rest of the year, I'm not sure what the plan is yet.

Hey Filip! Great to have you on the forum! I was wondering if you could give me some advice, I am a high level player and hit with great players in college midweek, but my training partner at the weekend is a lower level junior so I was wondering how I should maximise my time at weekends? Are there any feeding drills or anything your coach does with you that does not require him to be near your standard of tennis? Or anything you have seen other players do with thir coach?

I hope you understand my dilemma and can give me advice as to what good players generally do in this situation?? Thanks, I really appreciate it.

Have you any serious injuries that preventing from playing for limited time in the past?
Do you have regular physio or massage treatments?

I finally read all the way through the thread. Thanks for answering all of our questions!

1) You know how we're always told to play it one point at a time but how do you really do this when you're at 5-2 and serving for the set or when you're down 5-2 and are in danger of losing the set?

2) Do you have a structure for each point you play or do you just play the high percentage shots?

3) How do you feel about cheat sheets and the like? Say a laminated sheet of bullet points to look at during change over or shafty bands / stickers / etc. with certain words on them to remind you of what to do?

Yep thats me

Congratulations in helping to put Canada on the tennis map.
In another thread, someone asked about the role of Bob Brett in helping to coach and develop you, Eugenie Bouchard, and Milos Roanic as juniors.
Did he play a significant role?

Thread & Filip deserve a bump back to page 1 prior to Xmas...hope your seasonal break is going well and you get the batteries recharged for a great run through Futures/Challengers circuits in '13. Will try to get up to Palm Coast if you're playing there...just over a month away!

Word on the street is that you played a tie-break against a couple of 4.5s. Rumour has it that you took a beating, blamed it on the racquets, and smashed them around the video editor's head in a bid to keep it secret before heading off to find a new sponsor.

How much thought goes into it when switching your equipment? Did you trial Tecnifibre racquets before signing (and if so, for how long), or do you just assume that there'll sort out something you like? I associate them more with string than racquets - are you also switching from the Big Banger Original?

May you have a Jerzy Janowitz type breakthru on the tour!

As far as music goes, I'm definitely a rocker! I do like some hip-hop, but more of the older stuff, none of the new mainstream rap. My pump up song for a match, about 99% of the time is One Step Closer by Linkin Park. I do like almost any kind of rock though, including classic rock like Led Zep, Queen, and the Beatles, and also a LOT of 90's rock and alternative like Pearl Jam, STP and Our Lady Peace. Hope that cleared things up regarding the music I listen to :)

respect.

Havent read through the entire thread but thought id ask.. whenever you lose, do you bounce back pretty quick mentally? Do you analyse footage from your matches with your coach to see what you could have done better in certain situations?

Do you ever use gamesmanship in the warm-up? Pretend you're worse than you are or intimidate the to other guy or something like this???

Nadal apparently hits much harder than everyone else in warm-up.

Get as many sponsors as you can and have 5 year contracts if you can get them at all for $$$$$$$$. That will keep you going to the right restaurants to eat and have some time to go up the ladder.

Good luck!

Just like to say...tough loss the other day (Or was it today? They don't post match dates). Good luck next week.

So, do you hang around the tournament & hit with other players? Or do you pack up & head out to the next tournament?

Stringing at the $10K Futures in Sunrise, Florida and came across our very own, fpeliwo. As you all know by now, he made the finals of all 4 Junior Majors, and won the Wimbledon and US Open Championships last year. He is sure to be around for a long time on the ATP and definitely has the game to be a serious contender. Really smooth player on the court with amazing power, placement, change of pace, and the foot work is like he is skating on ice. SMOOOOOTH!

Very down to earth, genuinely nice guy, and great sense of humor. Really enjoyable to be around. Oh, and really great dancer. Just kidding, Filip.

Anyways, thought I would share.
