There is some truth that Federer is feeding the press while not standing by it.
Sometimes it okay but he does it every time. You mostly see him play DC during his prime year and above at keeping Swiss in the World Group.
When it comes ROF16 and QTRS....he dissapears. If he does play, he blames Wawrinka for spoiling it even though it was his fault for losing to Isner and the dbls.

thank you kishnabe everybody is saying the reasons the swiss lost to usa is because of wawarinka. i think federer should play davis cup there's no reason to not too imo when your worth over 200m$ screw money do something for your country

Davis cup should be abolished. It's crap nationalism that keeps people poking away at Federer and Murray and encourages Nadal to kills his knees further in some meaningless competition. The only good thing it might have ever done is partly spur Djokovic on into having a great 2011, but then again he could have messed up his back trying to play Delpo last year and he might have had a better finish to the season if he hadn't.
I do agree though Federer should be honest and say "I am not interested in DC, I want to win individual titles, I don't care all that much about winning as part of a swiss team, we're not going to win anyway, if you're so patriotic about being swiss, would you rather a swiss davis cup winning team or a 17 slam champion who is swiss?" Yeah some people want both cos it's never enough. But yeah Federer should just admit he doesn't give a crap about it.

Ok, look here. Stan is telling the truth and nothing but the truth. Roger does turn up for davis cup if he feels like it. Everyone knows this. Roger couldn't care less about Swiss either.
Roger does care about himself though. and his charities, somewhat.
and I don't blame Stan for what he said since Roger blamed Stan for the loss to USA in 2012. Roger threw Stan under the bus.

Just like doubles, nobody cares about Davis Cup. Abolish it and centre the tennis season around individual players and tournaments. Davis Cup is an irrelevant nationalistic sideshow. The beauty of individual sports like tennis and golf is that the appeal of a player transcends the petty tribalism of team and national sports.
Ideally, doubles, mixed doubles and the Davis Cup would all be extricated from tennis. I'd extricate the WTA as it stands today too, but it is still pretty popular relative to the ATP especially in the coveted North American market and consequently must remain.

Wawrinka played 37 matches in his first 17 Davis Cup meetings from 2004 to 2012. Federer played 46 matches in his first 17 Davis Cup meetings from 1999 to 2008.
The only very good to upper tier players with more Davis Cup matches than Federer are Stefan Edberg (70), John McEnroe (69), Boris Becker (66), Mats Wilander (61) and Guillermo Vilas (81). By the time Federer retires, it's highly likely that only Vilas will have more Davis Cup matches than Federer.

He basically has said this. Back in his prime he'd say that in the future he'd prioritize the Cup more, but of course he keeps on delaying that future which is what I guess Stan is mad about.
But:
1) He did play last year, and it did no good.
2) It's natural that given his age, situation w/ the kids etc he wants to put all the energy he can into stuff that's more in his control than DC.
But I certainly can understand the frustration of Stan and the Swiss Federation.

Did Federer actually blame Wawrinka ? I thought the recent controversy was due to a wrong translation of his words. Something like "Stan didn't play bad either" was translated to "Stan played bad" in English and someone had posted a clarification here.

'Wrong translation' is the excuse that the Fedfans trot out all the time. Fact is that Roger threw Stan under the bus and Stan was so upset he didn't even show up to the arena the next day. The local media, who all understand Fed - no translation required - were all so negative that Federer had to have a special press conference when he got to the next tournament to try and explain himself and claim misunderstandings and out of context and all the other excuses in the book. Obviously Stan is still p.o.'d at Roger and understood what Fed said very well.

You have no idea what you are talking about. What happened was one of the French newspapers reporting on the event mistranscribed one of Fed's remarks, changing one word, which made it sound like he said Stan played bad when he'd actually said "not bad."
The bad article was immediately picked up by the English-language media and the story spread like wildfire. Since Fed's remarks were on tape, the journalists could of course play them again to hear what he actually said and the mistake was corrected.
What Fed actually said over the course of that tie was still not that great, but not nearly as bad as that first innaccurate story.
Moreover, he called Stan on the phone multiple times once the story broke to apologize/explain and Stan issued a public statement that things were cool between him and Fed.

And since you as many Nadal fans seem to be under the impression that Rafa is willing to die for his country while Fed cares only about himself, here are their DC records, just stats, no biased fanboy opinions:

Nadal: 22-5
So at this point Fed played 31 more matches for DC, of course it's kinda easier to have a team who can win DC by itself basically.
