We knew the day was going to come where he just couldn't do it at the same level as the Top guys, and I think the AO showed it.

He could have lost to Tsonga, and was basically running the entire time on defense. Then, in the Murray match he had nothing left in the 5th. He just doesn't have the ability to play at a high level over 5 sets anymore. I am not really upset. I accept it, and thank him for the records he has set and the amazing finals he has put forth against the best of every generation he has played in. He'll win some Masters and maybe get to some more GS finals but I really saw a MARKED decrease in his level this year at the AO, and I think anyone would have to be blind to not agree.

Yeah, I felt sick over his losses to Djokovic @ the USO. And the loss to Berdych.

Was easier to take the Murray loss...Roger was flat outplayed.

I don't see him winning another slam outside of Wimbledon 2013 and 2014.

How many times has the Mighty Fed been written off, starting in 2008 when he had mono? Every time he loses a match people start writing him off and he keeps proving them wrong.

Dude i hate the living guts out of Federer and want to see him lose every match but i assure you he is not done he will continue to give murray and djokovic tough matches and he would sweep a major or 2 Federer is basically right in their with murray and djokovic

well fed is asking that very question. he's had his share of dream draws. the odds are catching up with him. the question is now if he keeps playing his H2H agains the other big 3 are gonna look weak. djok may end up with 10 slams.

Let me get this right, he lost in 5 sets but won his previous match in 5.

He lost a 4 set match to Berdych at the US Open but spanked both Murray and Djokovic at Wimbledon.

But he 'just doesn't have the ability' anymore? Perhaps it's you who's blind, or you just have a wishful memory which doesn't recall anything past the last 4 months.

well last I checked 17>10 so that doesn't worry me and I doubt Federer's losing any sleep over it either. It's all gravy from here on out.

Fed fans we've had a great run... a slam is going to be the exception rather than the rule.

If he doesn't get another one, i'm 100% satisfied with his career... if he does get one more, that's fantastic as well! If he actually got 2-3 more it would just be an embarrassment of riches for his spoiled fan base.

He can still play great (even as close to his peak level in patches) but he won't be able to bring it to every match they play. Being in your 30's does that to you I'm afraid.

Agreed; I have a feeling he still has one more slam in him, and somehow he will be there on the podium proving us (nay-sayers) wrong again, :)

Exactly! I think it was because of a bad back as evidenced by him wearing that compression undershirt throughout the tournament. If his back issues go away and he gets his serve back - WATCH OUT! Federer almost never gets out-served in a match, not even by Roddick, ever, but both Murray and Tsonga easily out-served him in this tournament.

He just needs to keep making semis. You never know when someone will be out injured, someone will fall early, someone will have an off day or — best yet — Roger brings out the magic like he did at last Wimbledon.

Roger keeps putting himself in a position to win.

His serving was terrible and got worse as he continued through the AO. Federer relies even more on his serve to make up for wear and tear of growing old.

I think the surface was his enemy as well. They sped it up from last years extremely slow to this years very slow but nowhere enough still. Roger needs to be able to penetrate with winners. On this court it is very difficult to do that. Suits younger guys who can run all day. Tennis with this slowing down of surfaces is becoming a kind of ping pong.

He isn't going to be among the Top 2 favorites at any slam other than at Wimbledon... but who cares? I was thrilled with the W last year and the No. 1. Gravy time.

He's made every slam semi minus a few quarter losses since like 1995, and for some reason this time, it's all over for him, okay!!!!!!

I actually agree with some of the commentators who say that Federer hasn't exactly taken a step back. It's just that the other players are really stepping up to nadal and federer and closing the gap.

Djokovic with his health and fitness and Murray with his fitness after losing to Nadal a few years back in Wimbledon and now more recently, his mental game after hiring Lendl.

You need some perspective and change expectations. He made the semi's with such a tough draw. He clearly was not 100% for the Murray match. He came out wearing his vest. He has been having back problems but he doesn't complain and make a big deal of it.

He still took Murray to 5 sets when he looked like he didn't have much left in the tank at the age of 31.

Given the right draw and conditions he is going to win one or two more grand slams.

Hmm... let's see if I've got this right:

No secret that the Fed man is a living legend in the sport, he's still competing at the highest level, and just lost in the Aus. Open semis after playing (according to the talking heads) the first back-to-back five-setters of his entire career.

Good luck with that omnicient declaration that he's all done. My prediction: repeat that one long enough and you'll eventually be right!!!

It doesn't matter. Luck will come sooner or later and when Federer draws Tipsarevic in his quarter (or somehow gets Youzhny like last year LOL) he can GOAT in the semis and finals to win another slam.

I'll count Federer out of contention for any given slam when he's retired. Before then, I'll always assume he's got a decent shot at winning it.

Well, Agassi won his last slam at 32 years and almost 9 months (thanks to a pretty soft draw, one has to admit). That's the record to beat for Fed (if we except Rosewall in the early 70s)

You can have bad serving days without being injured. I'm sure if you go through the archives you'll see Federer has had bad serving days in the past when he wasn't injured.

Perhaps for one match in a tournament and even that was rare. At this AO, Federer served poorly in EVERY match. He also wore that compression undershirt in every match to help his back, which he has never done before.
