I will be going and I am not looking forward to the mid 90's heat of July.

Mobile or Columbia in July - both hot- both humid-

Bring a 1/2 gallon cooler, lots of towels, and plenty of shirts for the matches - those frogg tog towels in a cooler of ice really help this time of year

Congrats to you and your team winning at 4.0 state ! Well done !

I just finished playing our state tournament in Mobile this weekend and will be playing there again in August in sectionals for an over 40 team. It was absolutely brutal for me at least. I cramped up in my second match of the first day at 2 pm so badly I couldn't play at all the next day. Yesterday, Sunday, I played a singles match at 8 am where, though I didn't cramp I felt awful and had no energy or wind and from the looks of it my opponent felt equally bad. The big difference is my drive home took 15 minutes and his was going to be six and a half hours.

The heat, I guess, could have been worse as at its hottest I think it was between 85-90 but combined with the extreme humidity and full sun it made for some pretty tough playing conditions. I drank so much Gatorade and another electrolyte, over a gallon per day, that my eyeballs should have been floating but I never had to urinate as it all just sweated out. I have one of those froggy towels g4driver mentioned that I kept in a small chest of ice which helped a good bit. I even brought a golf umbrella to the 2 pm match for changeovers as the vast majority of courts have no shade. Unfortunately I couldn't carry it out on the court while playing so it was of limited help overall but it did make the changeovers bearable.

And I get to do it all again in August--whee!

Sorry for the thread semi-hijack.

Mobile in the summer time was pretty brutal in the past, and I'm sure Lexington will be no different in late July.

I'm guessing most of the states are done with their state tournaments. Have all the state champions been decided? Anyone know who gets the wild card, or how that is decided,. or when the draws are expected to be posted?

Seems like Alabama has dominated all levels of sectionals in the recent years. Maybe with Southern's moving Sectionals away from Mobile, it will give another state some luck and we can start to see some new winners representing Southerns at Nationals.

Might consider GU Chomps -

Orange or Lemon flavor seems to be my favorites - watermelon might be ok also

These are better than Cliff Bloks IMO (Cliff has a margarita with salt flavor- I don't recommend these at all) - too salty

I eat a few of these chomps on changeovers and chase with water then Gatorade -

Started using these in tournaments and then playoffs when you play a lot of matches back to back - they really help for singles players IMO

Both available at a m a z o n . c o m

So, who are the odds on favorites this year?

Who knows....the Alabama teams seem to have either won it or finished second in 4.0 men's the last couple of years. Sure they will be a contender.

The Georgia team in this year's field has a number of the same players who won it 2 years ago and went to Nationals, so they will surely be a contender as well.

I know someone who plays league in South Carolina and they seem to think the SC team has a really good shot this year (although, like most of us, he has no clue how the other teams are around the South).

yea looks like a lot of parity this year. What part of the south carolina region is your friend? did he see that team actually play or just hear say?

He lives near the coast, but I don't know what league he plays out of. I don't know the basis for his statement....if he just watched or played against them. Just said that the team that always wins won their state and that this might be their best team that has gone to sectionals.

Arkansas did get the wild card. The winning team is a repeat from last year. The wild card team is young and talented. The side of the draw with GA, SC, NC, etc looks to be the tougher side to me.

Looks like most of the teams in both brackets are a repeat team from some recent sectionals. That's how these sectional tournaments are...usually the same captains bringing a team either back to back or every couple of years with some of the same prior players with some new non-bumped up players added to the mix. That said, since all won their respective state tournaments, I'm sure they are all tough teams for their respective level. GA, SC, and NC will at least all have the advantage of being closest to Columbia and one would think they would have most of their players available to play. The other states who are flying distance away may not be in a position to bring all of their top players.

I know several players on the SC team- some of those guys also won the 8.5 Combo last fall and played in a Mobile in March -

I have played against several of them in 7.5 Combo and 4.0 matches

One of their better players was bumped to 4.5 after winning all is singles matches at state last year -

They have a few 4.0S players like most teams at State - one guy that I played was at least appropriately rated IMO-
