Right now.....The French Open.

Nadal's stranglehold on the tournament has made it the hardest to win in the last decade. Players know they have a chance everywhere else (however slight). Djokovic is desperate for the French, and I think he feels that as long as Nadal is still in good form, he may never get it.

Before that. probably Wimbledon.

I think that historically it has to be Wimbledon, obviously. USO has always been a cheesy money grubbing slam and Aussie doesn't have the same weight (despite being a fantastic tournament). The French Open was always a second tier major as well probably until the mid 80's. In the present, every year since 2005 I think Roland Garros has been elevated in status to the point where its reached mythical levels. Federer's quest to win the tournament over the years and Nadal's brutal dominance there made it a very high profile major. Now Djokovic's ascendence and Nadal's continued domination of it add more drama. It seems like top players are always trying to win the French Open (Federer, Serena, Djokovic, even Sampras).

Outside the typical top 4 guys you mean? Lets see if any of them can win ANY slam first.

I think a "must have" for any of these mid-level bums is winning a slam in general regardless of what it is

I did not have Novak or Murray or anyone in specific. Obviously this would be French and Wimbledon.Let us take someone like Berdych or Wawrinka, who are accomplished on all surfaces. which major would add more value to their career ?

I doubt either player will win a slam so it probably doesn't matter

RG is the hardest slam to win.

just ask johnny mac, newcombe, Connors, Sampras, and so many others.

this is really the one they all dream about.

next comes Wimbledon.

Ok, forget these two. The next guy outside of Murray, Novak and Fedal - which major should he win ?

:):) I can't think of anyone outside those 4 right now trutfully who have a shot in hell of winning a slam for the next 2 years anyways. It probably be someone we aren't even aware of now.

Maybe Dimitrov? A wimbledon win would be nice from him

I agree. But I also feel Novak will win it before he retires.

Lendl gave up everything in his quest for a Wimbledon. Henin came back from retirement for that. Does this prove FO is relatively less important ?

dimitrov is not even good enough to win a masters title, let alone a slam.

his problems:

1. single hander
2. zero testicular fortitude
3. does not move well enough

Roland Garros in terms of difficulty(tends to be the one that so many "goats" are missing). Gotta be ready for intense grinding and rallying, etc, etc against numerous specialists. Along with nadal who im hoping djokovic will beat next year.

Wimbledon in terms of prestige.
2010-Nadal
2011-Djokovic
2012-Federer
2013-Murray
Nice variety going thus far too.

Roland Garros is the hardest, for the top players, simply because it is different to the other slams. It has usually been won by the claycourters rather than the top players. Now, of course, Nadal dominates, making it even harder. Physically, it is also the most challenging tournament, with 7 5-set matches on a grindy surface.

Wimbledon most prestigious

Wimbledon is still the most prestigious. However, the lack of a US Open or an Australian open since they are supposed to me in the middle of the court speed is the most glaring. (In actual fact the Australian Open approaches clay court speeds and the US open is heading in that direction).

So it is down to - what do you want - the most prestigious or not to have the most glaring ommisions?

An interesting comparison would be the careers of Lleyton Hewitt and Jim Courier. Hewitt won Wimbledon and the US Open whereas Courier won the Australian Open and the French. I know that Courier won more slams but do you think he would prefer the slams he won be Wimbledon and the US Open? I suspect so. All down to opinion though.

I think the ultimate in tennis is still Wimbledon and I do not see any reason why that will ever change. I agree that Rolland Garros has grown in stature.

Wimbledon.

Notice most of the classic/memorable tennis matches are coming from Wimbledon.

Objectively, it's Wimbledon. That's just about every player's dream. It was Nadal's dream, too.

Sure, there are some Thomas Musters out there who focus on the French Open/clay, but they're the minority. Even most of those who grow up on and excel on clay dream of Wimbledon.

Then how did he manage to outlast Djokovic in Madrid?
Don't tell me Djokovic was in a gifting mood that day.

Wimbledon. Funny how Nadal fans say RG, when Nadal himself claimed Wimbledon is the most important for him. Watch his interview this year after the loss. He was bitterly disappointed.

For the top players, it's the French Open. The hardest slam to win.

For every other player it's gotta be Wimbledon. The most prestigious slam.

Did it start approaching clay court speeds in 2010?

The choice of Wimbledon over FO is almost like 4:1 in the polls. Shows Federer's and Sampras 7 wimbledons in true light in terms of its value. Federer has one more final as well and who knows he may just win an other one in the next years. Truly a remarkable all time great achievement.

And this definitely isn't a biased sample at all.

A top player needs all of them except the AO. If any top player fails to win one of RG, W or USO it will be a big hole in his resume.

If you're really forcing people to pick one, the answer is going to be personal to each player. While I'd really love to win RG or W, being American and from New York, it would be really hard not to want my lone major victory to be in my backyard at the USO.

Why would one become a must win? Is it the resulting sponsorship dollars? Respect garnered from the tennis community or one's peers? Or, just a title you can add to your legacy?

If I was a professional, meaning I'm playing tennis for a living, I'd be perfectly happy winning any of the four majors, and really any tennis tournament I can. However, if it's the prestige of adding a name to my resume, I'd think it'll probably depend on where you live as to which of the 4 is more important; though I still have to give a slight nod to Wimbledon for overall top spot. I think that the Aussie Open is clearly the 4th, however, as more and more players are coming out of Asia, I think this will be elevated really quickly in the next 10 years or so, and become a major force from a marketing standpoint.

its tennis. every dog has his day once or twice in a lifetime.

can they do it year around and for 10-12 years?

either you have it or you don't.

dimtirov does not have it.

People who are putting French over Wimbledon shouldn't even consider themselves tennis fans. There's no way you can be that deluded in your love for Nadal to put French above Wimbledon

In the view of the Players, World Press and even the most casual of fans Wimbledon is the one biggie...........

Just about every player on tour will tell you the one dream they all have is to hold the trophy at SW19.......over all others.

You could argue that:

- The USO is the most important tournament for an American
- French Open for a Frenchman/Frenchwoman
- Australian Open for an Australian
- Wimbledon for a British player

Possibly, another argument for Andy Murray's case would be that the Olympics 2012 is his most important career title as the location is has only been selected twice and it wasn't won by another British man for a longer duration than it was at Wimbledon (I believe). But, another argument would be the same for the WTFs.

Another thing, Murray would have created a record for being the only British man to coincidentally winning his home Olympics and Wimbledon consecutively if he would have defeated Federer last year..

Statistically 'speaking', all majors are important because of the amount of points at stake. However, the French Open usually benefits clay court specialists like Rafael Nadal and the Spanish Armada and the US Open for Novak Djokovic and 'Sir' John Isner... I think he would have gotten further in the tournament if he would have had consecutive matches with lower-ranked players due to the rapid surface change (but he isn't an adept all-court player and so that argument can be dismissed).

Give the guy a couple more years before passing your final judgement i'd say.

Prior to 2011, Djokovic was certainly not known to his testicular fortitude on a regular basis.
