Cilic cited injury to hide failed drug test

Tuesday, September 24, 2013/byAP

LONDON (AP)—A tennis tribunal says Marin Cilic hid behind the excuse of a knee injury to withdraw from Wimbledon this year to avoid negative publicity after failing a doping test.

The Croatian player was suspended for nine months last week by the International Tennis Federation after testing positive for a banned stimulant at a tournament in Munich in May.

The ITF's anti-doping tribunal released its findings of the case on Tuesday, saying Cilic pulled out of Wimbledon before his second-round match against Kenny de Schepper on the same day he accepted a provisional doping suspension and waived his right to testing of his backup `B' sample.

The statement says Cilic "withdrew from Wimbledon, citing a knee injury to avoid adverse publicity.''

The ITF has accepted the player's contention that he ingested the stimulant inadvertently in a glucose tablet and wasn't trying to cheat.

In that case , he should expect a hefty fine for faking a knee injury

Well there was this one player who did a similar thing four years ago....
Lord Jesus and Mary in heaven. Praytell, who could that have been? I don't recall anyone having a knee-injury and sitting out for months on end. I really can't. My memory escapes me at times.

Of course, the sport of tennis should feel satisfied that the ITF would never cover-up any doping allegations because historically they have always acted above reproach. They have done everything to protect the sport and its reputation with tough and stringent drug testing that is applied fairly to all players, with transparency at all levels.

It seems like if someone insists on drawing a parallel between Cilic's case and Nadal the only assumption that could be made was that he was suspected of something and ultimately cleared, right? If we use the Cilic case as an example it would show us that things might be kept quiet during an investigation during which time a player might say they're out injured, but that at the end of that investigation the results will be made public if they are indeed guilty. I don't see a way to use what has happened with Cilic has evidence that Nadal was out on a silent ban.

Didn't you used to be a staunch Serena supporter?

i was never a Serena-bot. I am a fan, but have certainly been critical when she behaved despicably...

and for an actual Serena-bot to make a thread insinuating Nadal of taking PEDs based on nothing but speculation is the ultimate height of hypocrisy!

if circumstantial evidence was all that was needed to acuse of PED use, Serena would be at the top of the list along with Stosur, just based off of thier, quite unique, appearance and physiques...

Cilic could have stated any fake injury he wanted to, but he specifically chose 'knee injury'. I think it is something of an unspoken code within ATP circles how (doping- fake knee injury- skipping tournament) are kind of interconnected and he was trying to send a message with it.

You seem to be overly emotional today and very misinformed. I'll address your points and ask you a personal question.

First, I am a HUGE fan of American tennis. I love watching Venus, Serena and Sloane keep American tennis alive. Proud of it and will never deny it or say otherwise. Most of my participation in this forum revolves around tennis history pre-Open era because there are some kids in this forum born in the 80's and 90's who really don't know a lot about it. You will see me in a lot of GOAT threads because I'm a sheep hearder of GOAT discussions.

Second, I have never accused anyone of using PED's, ever. I have on several other occasions admonished the ITF for their involvement in covering up Andre's positive drug test in the '90's. Without a doubt I think there are more cases that have been covered up. I think its more wide-spread in tennis than you or I know of.

Third, why am I not surprised that you are accusing specific players of PED abuse, then falsely accuse me of doing the same? Project much? You are just all kinds of wrong here!

Fourth, Serena Williams has never acted dispicably. She's shown raw emotion on a tennis court and let her emotions get the best of her once during a match that she was defaulted. Serena should not be persecuted for one little outburst. They made her serve out her probationary period. If they could have gotten to Venus and suspended her, they would have.

Last, have you accepted Jesus Christ as your personal savior? His love is real. Go for it!

Cilic agreed to start a drug ban immediately pending the results of an investigation.

If he had been cleared, then what would have been the point of telling the world he was a drug cheat in advance of a finding?

He was found guilty of unintentional ingestion and now has nowhere to hide from a legitimate finding.

But the ban begins from the time he chose to refrain from competition.

It's all very simple.

You think that Cilic purposefully took an illegal supplement in order to lose money and possible sponsors to "out" a player? Then he outs himself. All of that is to get to another player on tour. Sounds a bit far fetched to me.

Hmmmmm....interesting.

This "citing a fake injury, but actually banned" story seems vaguely familiar :)
Imagine being in the early rounds of Wimbledon 2013 and having to bow out in the first or second round and ruining your championships. Wonders how many others in the locker room knew about it and when? Scary stuff.

Thank you man, you speak the truth. I believe it too. It's the same case when players say they have mono. Such b.s. Soderling is gone from tennis because he had mono? Yeah right, tennis is the only sport where I hear professional athletes citing mono as a legit reason to leave for a extended period of time. The same way I believe Cynthia K. Ross who judged the Mayweather fight left with a "leave of absence" when they started to investigate her and ties to the mafia after that fight and the Bradley pacman fight. I judge people by their actions not their words. Too many liars in the world. People really should take their brain cells and rub them together and find the truth rather than just accepting "excuses."

Oh, you're saying that he knows something as fact? or that he pre-supposes a fact that is an opinion on his part, and somehow he sees that if he either claims to have the same injury, it's a non-starter or he wants to out Nadal. Let's not say that we're talking about a different player. Seems far-fetched to me.

does that mean that you think that Fed's mono was BS. Let's face it, Fed, had the mildest case of Mono out there. So much so, that he didn't lose a match in 3 set matches until the final. Nor did he lose any set during a pre-Wimbledon warm up. Did his mono only strike when he played Nadal in finals in 2008?

Actually - I do think it was an excuse for not just admitting that he just lost. I think it hugs the same territory as "the sun was in my eye" when you just drop the ball. People make up excuses all the time, especially when they don't want to admit the truth. But I don't take anything away or mean this in any ill-will towards fed. But it's a natural reaction.

Yeah Angie, I agree. And I'm the same way in that if I do something where it's my fault, I'll straight up just be honest with myself and others about it. But I'm also a common man, these guys are public figures and maybe the pressure is on them to be somewhere where they feel like they're not or they need to do things or be places where they don't want to be. I strongly felt that Soderling got burnt out and just needed a break and rather than admit that or put an end or a hard date for a retirement he just let it in the air the best he could and said it was a lingering case of mono while he could figure things out. I'm just glad I'm not in that situation, but everybody has been placed in similar circumstances in their lives and it's not a comfy place to be.
But honesty is the most honorable way to carry yourself, but it's not always there for us.

The former president of the Spanish Tennis Federation reveals that "many times" tennis authorities have kept other doping cases secret.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-...en-hurting-tennis-as-cilic-feigns-injury.html

This makes me wonder how many other people were in on Cilic's phony injury act. Did Wimbledon, for example see a medical certificate as is required when a player withdraws late? If so, who signed the fake medical exemption? If not, it appears Wimbledon were going along with the lie as well.

Here is the ITF decision. It regards Cilic as an honest man at point eight but confirms his public lie at 44):-

http://www.itftennis.com/media/158356/158356.pdf

This report raises other questions. In the ITF tribunal report, Cilic is found to be an "honest and truthful" man. How does the ITF reconcile this finding with the knowledge that Cilic was lying about his knee. Doesn't lying to the public count in an assessment of someone's honesty? Why is the tennis public regarded with such evident contempt by the tennis authorities that they can be lied to and treated dishonestly in this way?

It would be interesting to go back and see exactly what Cilic said at the time.

*Sparkle*

The original thinking was that Cilic was told about the doping violation immediately before he withdrew, voluntarily, from Wimbledon, in which case a rushed excuse is understandable. Most players carry some kind of niggle, so he probably thought it was the best way to withdraw without drawing too much attention to himself at the time. He must have known the real reason would come out eventually.

With the benefit of hindsight, it makes him look worse, especially as it makes everyone wonder about all injury withdrawals.

Now I'm reading there is some suggestion that Cilic was tipped off about the possibility of the failure in advance of Wimbledon, in which case he seems to have decided to enter anyway, and wouldn't have been in a state of shock when making excuses for his withdrawal.

The tennis authorities regard doping as a problem that can be managed largely as a public relations exercise.

The Cilic case provides illuminating confirmation of that. Their position is best summarised as "It's ok for you, a doper, to lie provided it's just the public you're lying to, because we lie to them as well".

Doesn't surprise me that Murray is posting pictures of himself on his hospital bed.

It is a real positive that this has come to light. It gives renewed hope that they will eventually get Nadal.

They should get 'somebody' from Switzerland!

(I repeat my comment I wrote somewhere else.)
From an article: ---After Armstrong admitted he had doped for years, 17-time Grand Slam singles champion Roger Federer used that precise word -- "naïve" -- in suggesting that tennis is tainted by cheaters just like every other sport. ---
Yeah, he, for example, has never failed a drug test, but there have been repeated, random whispers that his major titles were built on a foundation of better chemistry. I keep wondering what has made it possible that the person who couldn't serve in the (Swiss) army due to his long-standing back problem, has won 17 GS titles!
All the ways seems to lead to Switzerland. Quotes:
"American cycling champion Lance Armstrong paid more than a million dollars to a Swiss company controlled by an Italian doctor [Michele Ferrari] who helped cyclists benefit from illegal doping, a new report says./---/Ferrari provided advice on how to evade detection by anti-doping testers."
Wikipedia: "Dr. Ferrari recommended I use Emagel the morning before controls, and another product to decrease my hematocrit."

He's not a doper until he was shown to have doped. He voluntarily stopped playing so that the ban, if it came, would start from that date and not later.

A test has to be investigated and decided upon and until then he is innocent. Why is this so difficult to comprehend? There is no ban until a tribunal rules.

This Cilic case is horrendous for tennis, because there seems to be a silent pact between the Players and the ITF resp. Atp to hide doping matters. Just read on German internet, that Austrian Koellerer, who is accused of fraud and match bribing, is lashing out on Nadal and some doping rumours in Austrian Newspapers. Certainly not a credible testament, but its a bad situation for tennis in the whole picture.

All tennis players can be suspected of doping and resorting to chemistry as the almost total absence of any real anti-doping programme in tennis leaves the gates wide open for players to do as they wish. In that respect, both Nadal and Federer along with everyone else can be suspected of doping. That's tough on innocent players but without a robust testing programme in place, every player becomes fair game for factually unfounded suspicion and rumour.

Tennis has never been a sport where anti-doping is taken seriously. The ITF's hoary old line, expressed through its technical director, Stuart Miller, used to be that drugs wouldn't really help a tennis player anyway. So, if the drugs wouldn't help, that suggests they wouldn't be wasting time and money looking for them. That's the mentality of those who govern the sport despite any impression they give to the contrary.

Wimbledon 2013: 'A Black Day'

There were so many injuries at Wimbledon one half expected British & Irish Lions rugby union coach Warren Gatland to appear with an update.

Seven players had dropped out by late-afternoon including Victoria Azarenka, the ladies second seed, Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, the men's No.6 seed, and Steve Darcis, Rafael Nadal's first round conqueror.

While Marin Cilic said he carried his knee injury into the tournament several players blamed the courts, notably Azarenka who was injured slipping during her first round match and said yesterday 'the court was not in good condition'. Maria Sharapova also found it hard to keep her footing and was overheard telling the umpire the court was 'dangerous'.

Darcis pulled out of his scheduled match against Lukasz Kubot with a shoulder injury incurred – but barely felt – in beating Nadal on Monday.

“I think it happened against Rafa in the middle of the first set when I fell down,” said Darcis who announced his decision on twitter. “I felt it a little bit but I was warm and after a few games it was great, I had no pain.

“A few hours after, I start to feel so much pain, I couldn't sleep that night. I saw the physio and the doctor yesterday. They did a good job and it's a little bit better today, but there is no chance I can play. I cannot serve. On the forehand side I cannot hit a ball. It made no sense to go on the court to withdraw after two games.

“I think adrenaline got me through against Rafa. I was serving great during the match. So I don't know why it was so bad after. Not being able to play is maybe the most disappointing decision I have had to make. When you beat a guy like Rafa you want to show more, I was playing maybe the best tennis in my life.”

Azarenka fell heavily during her 6-1 6-2 first-round win over Maria Joao Koehler requiring treatment on court. She was able to finish that match but unable to start against Italian Flavia Pennetta on centre court.

The Spaniard, who said she thought the courts were unusually slippery, had an MRI scan which showed no serious injury but failed a fitness test on the practice courts.

Also withdrawing were lanky American John Isner, who injured his knee on the third point of his match against Adrian Mannarino of France, Czech player Radek Stephanek and Kazahkstan's Yaroslava Shvedova.

Isner said “I served and landed on my left leg, like I have done 20 million times playing this game, and this is the first time I just felt this sharp pain.

“It wasn't like a pop... it just grabbed like really badly, and I knew I was in serious trouble. I knew it was not likely I was going to be able to play.” Isner gave in after two games.

Cilic pulled out of his match against Kenny de Schepper with a knee injury. He said: I started to feel pain in my knee in Queens and even before. I felt it in practice last week and before my first match. It was a big pain. I went through the match but yesterday it was difficult for me to put weight on my left leg. I had no choice. I can't risk something bigger happening.“

Stepanek suffered a thigh problem in the sixth game against 24th seed Jerzy Janowicz and though he initially carried on after treatment he quit at one set and 3-5 down.

Lance Armstrong proves that historic sports figures can and will go to great lengths to coverup their PED use. His story resonates throughout all of sports. The ITF has a history of covering-up tennis doping offenses. All very pertinient to discussions.

There are a similarities in most cases. Lying to protect reputation (er.) Endorsements, sponsors financial interest. Lying to hide long-standing abuses in the sport which shine a glaring light upon the character of governing sports bodies.

It is interesting to see people get so defensive. Pray. I don't recall Lance failing a lot if drug testing and he admitedly doped for years.

Chico, I fear you have your head in the sand. The Lance Armstrong case has changed the zeitgeist. At the very least, most reasonably informed people now understand that passing a dope test can mean little or nothing. This case has reverberated throughout all sport and acted as a massive wake up call to everyone interested in sport, whether as participant, spectator or regulator.
