will nadal have a tough time year ending no 1 in 2014?

Djokovic earned more points in slams this year. probably will hold true for next year too. Nadal was able to dominate little tournaments because he had a lot in the tank from his long injury break, nadal will be more wore down next year. And djokovic will more likely do well at the wtf next year.

At the Australian Open Nadal will increase the gap in points between him and Djokovic. After that Djokovic will probably gain in on him a bit because I can't believe Nadal pulls all that crazy stuff off again.

I don't know. On the one hand, yeah he'll be less rested so it's harder. But on the other hand, he finishes first in 2013 without having played the first grand slam so if he can do it in 2013 it should be even easier in 2014. I think what will be very important is if Djokovic lets Nadal dominate the clays season (especially RG) or not.

Nadal dominated little tournaments? LOL Nice try troll but winning 2/4 majors and 5 Masters titles isn't under the category of dominating little tournaments.

To have a realistic discussion about this, people are forgetting that Nadal didn't play Doha, AO, Miami, Halle and crashed out in R1 at Wimbledon.

There's a TON of points up for grabs there, in fact it's:

250 + 2000 + 1000 + 250 + 1990 = 5490 possible points.

Now obviously he's not going to win all of those, but if he makes it deep enough at AO, WIM and Miami that should make up for not winning as many Masters next year as he has this year.

His biggest battle will be defending Canada, Cinci and US Open points. That's the realistic time frame where he could lose the ranking.

djokovic outperformed him at slams. fact. nadal is wildly inconsistent at slams, so outdoing his current results might be hard.

How many guys currently playing the game have won a MS1000 tournament? Maybe 10? And how many different players have won a MS1000 in the past 5 years? 5?

Calling them little tournament shows how little tennis knowledge you possess.

Since 2009, apart from the big four - Davydenko, Ljubicic, Soderling, Roddick and Ferrer have each won a singles MS1000 title. The rest were split between Nadal, Federer, Djokovic and Murray.

oh come on. when thew orld no 3 says he doesn't care about masters tournaments you have to know they're not that important. how often do nadal and federer or djokovic pull out of masters tournaments to rest up? a lot. they don't do that much for slams, do they?

Who said they don't care about MS1000 tournaments? These are second only to slams.

When was the last time time someone pulled out of a MS1000 because they needed to 'rest up'?

Perhaps, you're confusing them with 250 level tournaments

the only weight masters tournaments have is because of their attached ranking points

Go away. No time for trolls.

After US Open or not at all

With all the points he will gain at the AO and Wimbledon in 2014, I just can't see a realistic scenerio where he could lose the number 1 ranking before the end of the US Open in 2014, if at all. If he makes the semi's at the AO and Wimbledon (that's conservative I think) - that means he gains over 1430 points from those two tournaments alone - just from making the two semi's.

Go away. No time for trolls.

the top players pull out of mastesr all hte time because they are tired. You think they'd do that for slams? Even for the wtf, nadal plays when he's running on his last legs. Murray esentially said he doesn't care about masters titles, he cares about slams.

The only fact that matters is 2>1.

If Novak outperformed him why couldn't he beat him?

Masters tournaments are not little troll, 250 and even 500 events are little but Masters, all the top players have to enter (unless they are allowed to skip due to age and matches played or whatever).

Congrats on revealing to the world how butthurt you are.

However, you are right on one thing, it will be quite hard to out-do his current slam results because he'll have to win 3/4 instead of 2

Bare minimum, he will get at least 75% of his clay court points from 2013. And he should make up points at AO and Wimbledon.

But realistically, Canada - Cincy - Indian Wells - USO are more than likely going to Djokovic - Murray - Delpo. If he can retain one or two of them, he'll still be looking good, unless Djokovic takes all those lost points for himself. I'd wager he loses #1 at some point in the fall of 2014, around the same time he earned it back in 2013.

interesting discussion. it's all about Rafa down under and at SW13, which is 4,000 points to be had. We know Novak will only be a possible final matchup for him until at least June or later, so ...

Nadal's won 3 IWs, so he could repeat that. If he loses early, he's got Miami for point recuperation purposes. And after all, Monte Carlo could be a 400 pt. gain as well.

With Murray a big ?, Nadal looks like the #1 for a while....

you need to get you iq checked. I'm talking about rankings. And for ranking purposes, djokovic did better at slams this year than nadal. nadal only will finish number one because of his superior results at smaller tournaments like masters 1000's.

"little tournaments"?

what are you smoking? it must be good.

Lol, no... if it was good he wouldn't be hating.

RG is the toughest slam to win and the u.s. open is not easy either.

and then nadal produces 5 masters series shields on 2 completely different surfaces as well.

and they call them "little tournaments".

unbelievable.

I have a feeling that nadal is planning a ultra mega monster major offensive in 2014.

anybody that gets in his way will be destroyed beyond recognition.

he will lay down his intentions at the Australian open and that should clear the way for his major offensive. he will take away nole`s aussie crown there.

these present losses are perfect for nadal. he will summon the relentless will when he has to and when he absolutely must. he will unleash hell when the time is just right.

these current/present losses will keep him working hard also so that is another huge positive.

nadal is bright chap. he knows what happened. he returned poorly and he did not take care of his serve.

his backhand was shaky and his movement was stale and weary. there was very little spark in his movement.

Now the difference is 2000 points , till the end of 2013 a normal case scenario is that gap to go to 500-1000points .Rafa will gain something like 360-720 points in Austalia ... so again let it be 2000. After that he would lose the South American points which are 900 ... 1100 .The most important are the Masters ,Rafa got to defend 4000 points till WImbledon and Novak has 1600 .... so my guess is sometime after Rome Novak would be again number 1.

Rafa will win everything on clay or nearly everything, as usual.
he will not lose before the final of the AO for sure, and there Novak has 0 point to gain.

Of course! Nadal will have a tough time ending the year at #1 next year. But it doesn't mean he won't. He just needs to perform well in Toronto, Cincy and USO again + the Asian HC swing.

That is debatable. They all have factors that are unique, and make each slam difficult in its own way.

You have an opinion ... OK ... but after the last sentence no one would take you serious .... this is just rubbish.

The Grand Slams are 4 tournaments in 8 months and you have 9 Masters in seven months .Last year a lot a guys missed Canada because was 2 days after the Olympics ,Rafa tends to miss Cincinnati and Paris but he missed a lot of Slams too and this is Rafa he always need time or rest for his knees.Roger didnt played in Monte Carlo because he didnt have great chance to win it after 2009 which is exatly after the hard court spring and he probably decided that he needs rest during this time.He missed Miami if I believe because of some sponsor issue.DJokovic and Murray are playing everywhere and you have players like Del Potro,Berdych,Tsonga,Ferrer,Soderling with 4 Master titles(all of them in Paris !!!!!!!) in 40 years combined careers and all of them except probably Tsonga are top 6 material .... in the 90s this kind of players were winning slams now they cant even make a master final :

DelPo is always a big threat for sure, but AO's surface + match in the best of 5, can't see DelPo beating Rafa ;)

AO surface doesn't really suit Del Potro. If they meet, I expect Nadal to win in four at the most.

At the moment, only Djokovic and possible Murray can hang with Nadal on HC in a best of five.

Nadal may lose #1 next year but if he has a better year than Djokovic he will still finish the year #1. I expect Djokovic to come back strong and Nadal to underpreform compared to this year.
