The juniors at my club all time their miles as a monthly test of speed and endurance. I currently lead the pack at 5:22! What is your time?
Well LeeD we were in at the same time and things were pretty uniform then, so maybe i had to run 3 miles too. I can't remember. But i do remember those 10 mile forced marches on sandy trails with full packs on during hot July trying to carry the guys who were dropping . PS. i still have my boots that are still great in the snow! When I was in the Army in 1970, they wouldn't let us stop at a mile in our boots, we had to run 3 miles in under 18 minutes to qualify.

5:22 is pretty good for a non track athlete ! You could probably get it down to the 4:45 range if you were just training for track.
Is 4:45 competitive in high school track right now?

I think you'd be competitive at most regular season track meets with this kind of time.
But at the state championship level, I think they are running in the 4:10 range if I'm not mistaken.

Almost same here. I did 6 mile reps at 4:40 to 4:48 (70 to 72 secs per lap) with a 60 to 90 sec jog in between (in the late 80's).I remember running a 4:45 leading off an interval set 20 years ago. If I would have just been running a competitive mile all out, I could have run it several seconds faster.
Today I think I'd be lucky to run a 6-minute mile, which is pretty sad.

In Texas, the big schools (5A) have got guys running between 4:10 and 4:25 at the State meet, but at the small 1A schools the times are more like 4:45 or so.
That is hard core Senti!! I was doing 5X5 1-mile runs with 400-meter jog recovery. My goal time was 5:00 for each mile, but I could never get the 5th mile in goal time (usually around 5:10).
What distance were you training for? I was doing 5K training programs.
I have a theory that almost all 5.0 and above players can run a mile under 6 minutes
Former 1500m world champion and record holder Steve Cram admits he is excited about playing his part in Team GB's success at the 2016 Rio Olympics after announcing he has joined the British Athletics Endurance Programme.

He joins Paula Radcliffe and Alberto Salazar.
I unfortunately am not able to do that but probably if I work a little bit more on conditioning and sprint for most of the mile, I could probably achieve this goal within 3-4 months?
Back in the day, the UK had it going on with Cram, Coe and Ovett (sp ?) plus David Moorcroft had one brilliant, career defining race in the 5,000 meters.
