I could run a 5:30 at 18. 2mile best was 10:50. Now I can drive 2 mile in 5min.

Anyone care to predict LeeD's best time?

Bonus points if you can list at least 10 of the 25 relevant conditions (type of shoes, shorts, deodorant, etc he was wearing at the time).

I'm shooting for 8:15 in 2 miles with a soft NoCal assisted breeze in some Jaclars. Whoops, no they were basketball shoes, so I'll go with some Chuck Taylors & stick with my time of 8:15. No really I'll say 10:00 for anyone not running in competitive college meets.

I once ran a mile under 8 minutes as a teenager.

I think I could go faster these days, but I don't run miles. I'd probably have a heart attack.

Last summer my best was 7:30, historically good for me at 41yo 189lbs. I think my best ever was 7:20 and that was in my early 20s at 175Lbs or so. I hate running. I think it's miserable.

I just got out and ran the other day...8:45 mile. I'm tipping the scales at 194 now, been doing heavy lifting and have bulked up a bit, especially quads. Basically haven't run much this winter, could probably count on one hand. You lose it quickly. Goal is back down to 7:30 in a few weeks.

I remember running a 4:45 leading off an interval set 20 years ago. If I would have just been running a competitive mile all out, I could have run it several seconds faster.

Today I think I'd be lucky to run a 6-minute mile, which is pretty sad.

LeeD's times for the mile. Best was 6:20 something. Why can't I remember? Because it was in 7th grade, the last time I took regular PE.
8th grade, basketball in fall, track in spring. Same with 9th grade.
10th grade, JV football in fall, bench warming varsity basketball in spring.
11th grade, varsity football bench warmer except for final game, reg season, I played both ways and in the AAA Championship game. Varsity basketball in spring.
12th grade, varsity football fall, varsity basketball spring.
I can say I never ran a 50 yard dash worse than 5.5 seconds, did plenty at 5.2 seconds.
Just last week, for you guys, ran the spider drill tapping my bad left foot at the 5 intersection marks, time was 20.3. Starting heart rate, 76. Finishing heart rate, 132.
Matt Lin said he did something pretty similar, maybe 18 seconds? That can't be true. I was basically strolling, and he's twice as quick as me.

7:50 if completely healthy and just running one mile. Average speed of 8:30 - 8:45 for five to six miles. I'm in my mid-50s.

When I was 30, training for VetPro motocross, we'd run around LakeMerced, 4.9 miles the spot we started, usually around 33 minutes, give or take 1 minute faster and 5 minutes slower.
JP Morgan, one of my training partners, usually ran just under 30 minutes.

I never really ran for time in the mile when I was in my best running shape, but I did run a 5:20 mile for the first of several mile repeats at cross country practice in high school. Now, I could probably hit 6:30 if I pushed it and possibly 6:00 if I trained for a couple weeks.

My best for 3000 metre was 11.47. Not sure i could still do it now!

Had a friend who when 15 ran 4.12 for 1500 metres in a Private School Carnival.

Wow,that was impressive. A few years later aged early 20's he put on the kilos big time.

Sad to say now he is more or less a vegetable. Years of being on anti- depressants has killed nearly all his brain cells.

Not sure if he can even recognise me anymore its that bad.

My best quarter-mile in the last two years was 1:32. Basically interval training for a race.

When i was in the Army in 1969 i ran a 6 min mile (in boots) to qualify for Airborne School. Now at 63, i'm sure i could run a 7-8 min mile. I won't try 2 miles though as i am more into high intensity training.

my fastest time running in lane 4 on the drake stadium track at ucla was 6:05. they put up a bar to prevent people from running in the 3 inside lanes. if i was running in lane 1, i imagine i would have been under 6 mins. i was able to do intervals of 440 at ~55-65 seconds in those days.

these days, i'm happy to do 8 min miles. :)

When I was in the Army in 1970, they wouldn't let us stop at a mile in our boots, we had to run 3 miles in under 18 minutes to qualify.

Well LeeD we were in at the same time and things were pretty uniform then, so maybe i had to run 3 miles too. I can't remember. But i do remember those 10 mile forced marches on sandy trails with full packs on during hot July trying to carry the guys who were dropping . PS. i still have my boots that are still great in the snow!

5:22 is pretty good for a non track athlete ! You could probably get it down to the 4:45 range if you were just training for track.

That sounds like a great time.

One of the ladies that I work with could do six minute miles in her 30s. This was after a couple of kids. I don't think that she runs anymore though as injuries took their toll. I work with another lady that used to run marathons and she had a hip injury that took her out of running (now cycles).

Running is rather addictive.

Is 4:45 competitive in high school track right now?

I think you'd be competitive at most regular season track meets with this kind of time.

But at the state championship level, I think they are running in the 4:10 range if I'm not mistaken.

Here, you would've gotten around 4th or 5th place.

In Texas, the big schools (5A) have got guys running between 4:10 and 4:25 at the State meet, but at the small 1A schools the times are more like 4:45 or so.

Almost same here. I did 6 mile reps at 4:40 to 4:48 (70 to 72 secs per lap) with a 60 to 90 sec jog in between (in the late 80's).

Today, had a nice 32 min jog on some really springy grass in a lovely almost desolate park with lots of flower bushes all around and wonderful greenery :)

That is hard core Senti!! I was doing 5X5 1-mile runs with 400-meter jog recovery. My goal time was 5:00 for each mile, but I could never get the 5th mile in goal time (usually around 5:10).

What distance were you training for? I was doing 5K training programs.

I have to run a 5k today. I was doing 3 in sub 8. We will see how it goes, i am not a runner.

A mile..god I am trying to remember. I could run 1 mile pretty fast. I want to say under 5:30, but that was in my track days when running was much easier.

I think 5:06 was my best mile. May have beaten that though. For varsity soccer we had to run a sub 5 I think..and I made the team, but I may be wrong.

Show how much I run now..lol. I barely think about times.

I didn't mean to correct you, or to slight you in any way. I don't know what the various branch's of the USArmy did for training.
I joined in 1970, shipped from Presidio SanFrancisco to Ft.Ord, then to NC. Spent 9 months on the EastCoast getting bitten by a zillion mosquito's, back to Ft.Ord for 2 months and then discharged with a 1Y.

High school I ran varsity track but I was not a middle distance runner so I didn't get timed that often. I want to say I was in the 4:40s range. Right now many moons later, I would be lucky to break 8 minutes.

I was a 5K / 10K guy. I was in my last year of running doing about 80-100 miles a week (if you count the reps, morning easy runs etc). I got things working only in the last year ... most years were wasted due to severe calf issues caused by heeled running shoes, plus the wheat/gluten thing which did not let me breathe.

I was hoping to go under 15 for the 5 K but then i for the first time adopted a coach who i thought was knowledgeable. That guy ruined my training coming into the season. He had me doing reps with his chaps, with long breaks in between. Annoyingly, whenever i go to the national sports channel on telly i see them interviewing him for his views on something or the other!

Then i got a job and quit. Today i am getting back into running but i don't think i can work it up to a marathon with domestic pressures and age -- am in late forties. I really wanted to run a marathon.

edit: you probably were good for a 15:30 5K roughly. I think even i did a 400k jog recovery, cant precisely remember. My 1000m reps definitely had a 100m jog in 30sec.

A 5k in 15:30? Wow. That's just madness.

I ran one last night, it was a casual speed large event so it was very hard to pass slow runners. I did it in 28 without really exerting myself much. I can get under 25 in a real one probably at best right now.

Im built like a sprinter and thats what Im best at.

Starting to think running aggressive miles is a great workout though. It's like 6 minutes and over, but it will hurt.

I have a theory that almost all 5.0 and above players can run a mile under 6 minutes

I unfortunately am not able to do that but probably if I work a little bit more on conditioning and sprint for most of the mile, I could probably achieve this goal within 3-4 months?

He joins Paula Radcliffe and Alberto Salazar.

Back in the day, the UK had it going on with Cram, Coe and Ovett (sp ?) plus David Moorcroft had one brilliant, career defining race in the 5,000 meters.

how fast can you currently run 1mile and what age are you? i think if i devoted all my training to running i could do it but i also play a lot of tennis so i dont have the energy to do both

Yes, those were fine/heady days. Dave had that one 13:00.4 WR. The first one to touch 13:00. If i recall, Henry Rono was at 13:08.

America had Steve Smith, iirc. Salazar in the marathon. Pat Porter in the XC.
