Took down ATP #170 4 & 2 in the first round of qualifying. Impressive win. Next round could be tougher, though.

Next up Ricardis Berankis, whose ranking has climbed from 159 to 118 since April.

SoBad, it's a good thing you've joined Noah's ark early before the flood of fans come piling in.
Berankis is in a slump. Congratulations to the TTW darling and best of luck in Q3.

Greetings TW, Thanks so much for those who have wished support to our team. What a great experience and so much fun for my first backstage credentialed experience.

Totally agree that the immaturity/inexperience showed (I remember back to when I was 18 and just laugh a bit). But so encouraged by the physical capability shown by straight setting ATP 170 and an opening set 2 break beating of former ATP 67, before the meltdown. Who know what could've been if the pressure was kept in check and momentum progressed. The qualifer in the section won 1st round today!

I do agree on potentially being decent in college, especially after last weeks performance and beating both the current and former NCAA champs in recent practice matches (bummer on SJ's retirement just now), however as far as not being a very good prospect, i disagree.

Thanks again to all those with encouraging thoughts as we learn from our mistakes, address shortcomings and plow onward. I look forward to supporting all USA players, young and less young to increasing success in the near future.

Age and maturity are not necessarily the same thing, a person can age and not mature. Playing as junior in the pros is easy, playing as a pro in the pros not so much, we'll see how it goes.

Granite I posted this in the other thread and I wanted to hear your thoughts on this and if collin's coaches are working on this

"I was really surprised watching Collin play this match. I saw him last year and thought he had a couple of evident weaknesses that should be worked on.

The main one is of course the forehand. He doesn't hit through the ball enough for the ATP game. He wastes so much energy hitting that loopy topspin ball it wasn't a surprise Berankis was getting him to hit the ball shorter and shorter. He looks like a strong guy he should be hitting his forehand a lot bigger. It doesn't help that he stands 10 feet behind the baseline but that's a necessity almost when you have such a radical swing path. Doesn't help in returning a good flat serve either when there's a much higher chance of shanking.

Then there is the serve. Every single first serve I saw was a slice serve. Every single one. Its not even remotely disguised either he tosses the ball out so far to the side.
Even a good 5.0 player is able to hit a slice serve without tossing the ball that far out to the side. He should be mixing up his serve way more.

On the other hand the fact that he's doing as well as he is despite those 2 major weaknesses shows how much potential he has. Obviously great fighter, mover, and very nice backhand. If he gets the forehand and serve on par with the rest of his game and starts being able to play offense in addition to the defense he could become really good."

He's improved a lot in 1 year! Keep improving and the pro results will continue to come. I expect him to do very well at UVA

altamarino gives off so much negativity when he's down. he needs to strengthen the mental part of his game. watched him against berankis at the qualies and berankis slowly picked him apart in the second and third sets, going after his backhand wing to force a weak reply and then finishing off at the the net with a volley into the open court.

Rightfully so. He said it himself, he's taking the fall off to play the circuit and if his results warrant it, he will turn pro. If not, he will enroll at Virginia. If you're getting dusted 1 and 1 by Kudla (who is a good player) you need to re-evaluate your options.

The counter argument is what business is it of anyone to tell another person who they don't know what to do. Who gives a **** what someone does who we don't even know?

Well, if I were in Collin's personal presence and told him what he should do, then that would be different than discussing it on a message board, wouldn't it? A message board discussion is for the purposes of clarifying in our own minds what is best for American tennis. No one here is "telling anyone what to do."

Agreed. 99.99% of American H.S. tennis players should go to college. Should he go to college? That's his decision. There's plenty of second guessers here. It's so easy to say player X who turned pro out of H.S. won't make it. Most don't make it anyway. If he goes pro I say good luck.

what? what kind of response is that?

An argumentative and snarky one. HaHa. Feeling chippy today.

Collin lost to Giron today. Giron was the best player in college last year, so not sure what this means but I feel Collin might decide to go to college after all. One can always turn pro later.

Giron actually lost to a lot of college guys last year and was far from the best, he just happened to win NCAAs, which we all know is a diluted field at best. I would put a lot of guys well ahead of Giron, imo.

He lost to four guys last year. That's not a lot. He was ranked #2 behind a teammate who he beat head-to-head and had a better record than. He also won three futures during the year.

You can maybe say he wasn't the best, I guess. I think it's a tough case to make. But there is no case you can make for him being far from the best. That's ridiculous.

Far is subjective. He also played #2 a lot, and didn't play other #1s, and lost matches, had several unfinished, so I just don't put him in the "dominating best college player of the year" group. I think domination is required for that and I didn't see it, imo.

I've only seen a few of CA's matches streamed online, but it seems like against some of the better opponents, it would help if he got more free points or at least weak replies during his service games.

The following are the opinions of a low level rec player, so take it with a large grain of basalt.

- he seems to mostly hit a topspin slice or slice serve.

- i don't remember him using a kick serve much, if at all. the kick serve bounces to the returner's left, making it harder for to run around the backhand when returning 2nd serves.

- i think he could probably get a little more velocity with some slight tweaks to his service motion. might be worth finding a coach that specializes in serves. At times, I think his elbow might be a bit to close to his body at the trophy position.

The NorCal Tennis Czar reports Altamirano is up to a career high of 732 in the world in the singles.

Wonder how this will affect his decision to attend UVA in the spring.

He has enrolled at UVA and is listed in the student directory. He is not listed on the tennis team roster yet, probably because until he starts classes in January he is not an official student.

I posted about this on the ACC tennis discussion. It makes UVA a top 3 team and I think it is #1 with USC and UGA and Oklahoma next.

It is official that Collin Altamirano will play at UVA this spring. I think only USC

has the talent to beat UVA, but I do not think they will.

Uhh.....I think you need to help him a bit with his interview responses. The Thomas Jefferson line has to go :)

Anyway, congrats Granite. Looks like Colin has a promising future.

"The reason I chose Virginia is because I believe this is the United States' university, having been founded by Thomas Jefferson," said Altamirano. "To be a student there is something special. I feel like I'm going to be a part of something that's greater than tennis, something more important. I can't wait to show UVa what I can bring to the university."

how is he get his most of his time in Virginia in academics ? with going there for only 1/2 of the year starting in January? sounds like not a serious commitment to academics to me............

Many students matriculate in spring, until we see if he returns after spring we cannot say.

I think this is a good decision. He can get started on an education and train with a great coaching staff and still pursue futures and challengers in the summers.

I am not sure how that works, based on the wording it almost seems like you can only accept money from Open tournaments or as expenses from pro tournaments.

If you read the regulation is it more clear than the synopsis. You can keep prize money up to 10k more than your expenses for all tournaments. Looking at the prize money list for 2014 you have to be top 300 before you make 10k more than expenses so I don't think anyone is going to be ineligible due to winning too much prize money.

I guess the possible exception would be someone who was awarded a wild card for a grand slam.

Baughman officially turned pro in February so he can't play college tennis now, even if he wanted to (except at the NAIA level;

But since he's only made about $5k in prize money in 2014, doesn't that mean that he is still under the $10k limit so could still go to college?

"Officially turned pro" is a meaningless statement. He is certainly eligible to play NCAA tennis as far as amateur status. I doubt he is prepared academically, I think school has never been in his plans.

False. If he signed with an agent, he can't play D1 sports.
