Volkl V-Icon Natural Gut $26.00 Deal or No Deal?

Has anybody ever played with this? I am curious, because I have only played VS 16 in a hybrid before, and would probably use this string as a test venture into natural gut. Is it comparable to other guts, or should I be better off using another gut string as a benchmark?

VS 16 is the gold standard for natural gut, the best you can get (unless you like the thinner VS 17.

The Volkl is a yellow/orange colored Klip Legend. It feels and plays differently.

Personally, I don't like it. But as strings are a matter of personal preferences, you might want to try it.

As for me, I would not buy it even at $20. At $15, I would have to think about it.

Thanks for the suggestions; I know VS is still the best out there as far as natural gut gets, and there's no messing with that! Now, when you mention VS in that light, are you referring to the new black one, with the BT7 technology, or the older ones?

What? Did they raise price on Pacific Classic?

Pacific Classic is 26.95, while a certain site is selling V-Icon at 26.00. But I think you need to pay shipping for that distrbutor. So if you order in bulk like 20 sets, you will end up paying less for V-Icon.

V-icon plays a lot firmer than VS. If you like VS at 60, I'd say string V-Icon at 58 or 56 to get similar feeling. It plays softer than Klip legend, and harsher than Pacific. Donno about the new Legend tour.

The coating is very consistent and uniform. It also ghost less than VS and Pacific/Klip, maybe due to the yellow color. I have strung like 9 half sets of V-icon already and so far so good in terms of stringing. I used to break 17 g Pacific and Klip Legend within 10 hours but the V-Icon at the same gauge seems to last longer than that. It's fraying and lose some color here and there but the string in general still looks ok.

The new formulation is too new to be the standard. Not enough people have tried it.

Having said this, I have not heard anything positive about the new bt7 here, only negative feedback.

Some posters here are stocking up on the old VS, fearing that it will be discontinued.

You are right that it feels a lot firmer than VS. I tried it at several pounds lower than VS. It still does not feel like real natural gut.

This is just Klip Legend with a colored coating. The color additive may make it feel a bit different, but overall it feels and plays like Legend to me.

The only Legend that I can stand to play with is the 18-gauge one.

I'd be interested in trying it out. Volkl V-Icon Natural Gut only seems to to be available in the US?

Once postage is factored in, my fav VS team is cheaper!

About six months ago, I ordered two pack of VS 17 (Team) and two packs of VS 16 (Touch) from TW Europe and they sent me "classic" version (non-BT7) of VS Team, and the new BT7 version of VS Touch, so I believe that old VS Team is still on stock. However its price went ridiculously high in the meantime (42 EUR in Europe).

I was considering trying some Volkl Gut for that price.

Imagine my disappointment when I realized this thread is older than my daughter.:)

Which string is the closest to the old VS?
Pacific Classic?

I heard that Babolat makes the gut for Wilson.
A while back Drakluie (sp) posted that one time he opened a set of Wilson Nat. gut and the string was marked VS gut on the string.
They both hit the same to me as I have used both a lot over the years. Nat. gut is my favorite set up.I have hit with gut since the 60's.
At present time I have 2 racquets strung with VS 16g.(pre bt7), and 1 strung with Wilson Nat. gut 16g. and one with Pacific TG 16g. and the Wilson and VS hit the same, where the TG hits a little softer.

I tried some V-Icon about a year ago. I thought it played stiffer than any other gut I had tried. I did not get the feed back or touch I have had with some other guts, i.e., Pacific Tough gut or Pacific Prime gut. VS gut now, IMO, plays nothing like it did some years back since they added the new "BT7" series. To me Babolat it is not worth the extra $$.

Yes.. my Thread ohhhhh so long ago.

Is Volkl gut still $26.00?

It's $36 now, and is almost certainly repackaged Klip legend. The natural gut market is really sad right now and I don't think it's going to get better. I just can't see any new natural gut string factories opening up.

VS gut = BT7 garbage, will never buy again
Wilson Gut = whopping $55/set

Everything else is mediocre product from Pacific or Klip.

Hi Mike:

Glad to see you are still out there hitting the fuzz off the ball. The other day I found a 1/2 set (In my tennis mess) of Babolat Tonic Natty Gut and strung it up in a Tonic / Isospeed Spin hybrid. You can't beat the Gut / Poly hybrid set-up for everything. Power.. touch.. comfort..spin. I will have to dig thru my tennis mess to see what other things I can find.. :)

BTW... since you are a Volkl guy.. and love that 93 sq inch head size...maybe pick up the Volkl Organix 10 mid. Really nice frame for $59.00.. and if you go thur the TW facebook page discounts you get another 10% off. I picked one up and it is a bit outside of my playing weight.. makes a great training frame for me...it would be right in your wheelhouse..

Have a great day.

At $26/set it wasn't a bad buy. I felt more wiry, stiff, coming out of the package, but it played just about as soft as the Klip Legend. The yellow color wears off quickly. I still like Legend better, but I'm not going to pay $40+ for a set of gut.
