I do not believe Wake Forest will win the national title. They will lose in the tournament to a mentally stronger team.
You mean like this team for instance will win the national title.

Indoors the points are very short. Talent and big games go a lot farther. Everyone is fresh because it is the beginning of the spring. I think Vik is right.

I would argue that no one in college tennis plays a long point better than Petros Chrysochos.

Wake may not win the national championship, but I think it would be because they are not playing well at the bottom of the line-up (relatively speaking), not because of some vague claim about mental toughness. They looked pretty mentally tough when winning 4-3 at UNC a few weeks ago. In fact, I would argue that Wake has looked their best against tough opponents, and sometimes they look unfocused against lesser opponents.

Drove by a Cungu distribution center yesterday in Ulcinj. Someone at a tournament I was playing at told me a local (Rrezart Cungu) played at Wake Forest and I looked him up. Must be a great player. Imagine if he was Montenegrin (by heritage) instead of Albanian - he'd probably be 4"-5" taller and possibly even better.

i think wake has to win it all
but often a usc/ucla Team Comes by and steals the Championship

i do not see many very good Teams
OSU and UNC are strong but not that strong
maybe TCU ? not lost a lot of games last 2 months
Miss State? Lost 2 matches all season maybe.

Wake has won National Indoors, ACC regular season, and the ACC tourney. They seem poised to keep winning and I would wager that winning those three in the same year provide plenty of mental toughness.

Wake has tendency to choke in this long NCAA tournament where not only talent but also endurance comes into play. I dont' think Wake will reach the final

I'm going to go on a "limb" and say Wake wins it all this year since no one else is buying them. All boils down to Mansouri and Seraphim..in singles ironically. UCLA will definitely be tough but don't buy Cressy or Rapp in singles. Prediction, Wake 4-2

The way they have the doubles line up will make them extremely tough

You might re-think that if you saw UCLA perform in the Pac-12 Championships. Cressy was serving bombs and when he is on he plays a very disruptive game mixing in a fair bit of serve-and-volley and chip-and-charge. Rapp will probably just play doubles as he did in the Pac-12s. I will go on a limb and say if UCLA gets to the final they will use the same line-up, Redlicki, Zhu, Smith, Staggs, Cressy, Hance in singles and Redlicki/Zhu, Smith/Rapp and Cressy/Perriera in doubles.

Dear Feddie,
How do you explain Standford's performance the last 17 years?
Sincerely,
Mentally tough Double Faulter.

Had a few drinks before they last post. Meant Staggs..not Rapp.

We will see.

Another great point by you, Wake did choke in National Indoors, the ACC season and ACC tournament. If they choke again in NCAA's guess that would mean another championship?
On the other hand Stanford never chokes and um win......nothing.

I wonder if Geller might transfer to Wake to give himself a chance to make it farther in the NCAAs?
LOL,, Geller is at Stanford for academics as well as tennis. and right now, in his mind, he has the best of both worlds, and I agree with him. But I do have to agree that he didn't improve this year as the season went on. That is worrisome. How has Wake forest player developed ? Did the coaching contribute significantly to their player development ? Did the Wake players improve as season and years went on ?

Geller would do well in the #5 spot for Wake.

Sorry. Confusing two different players.

Speaking of Bar - here's a good article that went up today about his time in the Israeli Army before coming to Wake. There's a certain segment of fans who will throw shade at programs that have a lot of foreign players - especially when their teams are losing to said foreign players. Really enjoyed reading this and hopefully there are more articles written that give some background to some of the people who come to the US to play.

he's not as good as Duty Sela or that USC player though

Wake Forest has a very interesting roster mix of international players. Their players come from countries where tennis is not big and where they are one of the best players from that nation. Cyprus, Tunisia, Macedonia, Israel, Uzbekistan. I think it actually helps the team overall because those players have valuable Davis Cup experience.

Is it intentional that Wake recruits this way and chooses players from countries like that as opposed to players from France/Germany/Spain etc? Or has it just been coincidence and good fortune that those countries even produced a high quality college level player in the same time period and that Wake was able to land them?

I have been critical over the years of teams using older international players with lots of professional experience and teams made entirely of internationals. That being said, I have nothing against the players themselves. Even though Illinois has had lineups mostly made up of American players over the years, I have really enjoyed the internationals who have played for them such as Kevin Anderson, GD Jones, Bruno Abdelnour and Aleks Vukic.

The unknown less discussed truth on international tennis players competing in US college ranks is there are many more of them that are not top ranked players. Some are like American players average, not so good, above average, etc. what many of them are doing is taking slots on rosters unfilled by American players. Without the internationals playing college tennis, my guess is some smaller programs may shut down. I say we celebrate the diversity and increased level of competition they bring to US Tennis. Let’s shift the focus to the USTA meaningfully growing the game domestically, now!

So true especially for D2 and many MMs. We do need to hold USTA to not just grow the game but to provide opportunities for improvement so there are not just a handful of UsTA PD kids and a few others with private coaches on the D1 rosters. The bright spot is there is a place for every US kid who wants to play tennis-just may not be a scholarship funded D1 spot. Lots of US kid shining at D3.

I've argued for the merits of Internationals playing US college tennis for so long now I usually stay clear. Every now and then I'll chip in. Not wasting any more energy on what I have no control over. We have more influence over bringing new players to the game versus keep out those who what to play college tennis.

Well, your a better man for it...People concentrate on the wrong things it's so hard to convince otherwise. You get it!

WFU with over 50% of its roster wins an NCAA title, great achievement, I was at the final and that team is good, credit to OSU for fighting hard

This thread is an entertaining read in retrospect. Quite a dominating season from Wake Forest. They were #1 from start to finish, won the ITA Indoor Championship, the ACC regular season championship, the ACC tournament, the NCAA tournament, and had the two NCAA singles finalists. They also won an ITA Fall doubles championship (Mansouri/Chrysochos), ITA coach of the year (it's interesting Bresky wasn't ACC coach of the year...), fall ITA Sportsmanship winner (Mansouri), and spring Carolina's Region Sportsmanship Award (Chrysochos).

I guess success breeds some jealousy, but throughout the year on this forum it was claimed that Wake was too old, too international, made too many bad calls, played too many pro tournaments, and had too much of an advantage playing at home. I found the Wake team to be quite the opposite - a very impressive group of players and people.

It was great having NCAAs in Winston-Salem. Despite the patchy weather, the crowds were fantastic. I really enjoyed watching all the tennis. I was very impressed with some of the teams I watched, including Columbia and Ohio State. I wrote this elsewhere, but I quite enjoyed Ty Tucker. I hope he gets his championship at some point. I also hope the NCAA can continue to improve some aspects of college tennis, particularly the streaming and electronic scoring. They should contract this out to PlaySight.

It's a great time to be a college tennis fan. There are so many good websites, twitter handles, and podcasts now.

For those that were worried about the academics of the Wake players, Petros Chrysochos was just named the ACC Men's Tennis Scholar Athlete of the Year. He dominated the nation this past semester while also obtaining a 3.93 GPA! Four other Wake players were named to the All-Academic team (Seraphim, Botzer, Solomon, and Zlobinsky). Not bad.

Gojo took down Ronnie Schneider today in Lexington quailes, 6-1 7-6(5). Not to worry for Schneider though as he can get him back at Gojo on twitter for something I bet.
Teammate Petros lost to Aziz Dougaz of FSU in Champaign finals. Interesting Petros is still playing Futures when guys he beat-Gojo, Torp are playing Challengers. Petros did lose in 2nd rd of Iowa City Futures to Nick Chappell. Petros is listed as 529 on ITF site. Think Rybakov is still the highest ranked returning college player at #501.

As far as Ronnie S, he also lost to JJ Wolf in Qualis of Winnipeg. At least Sigouin of UNC won a MD match at Gatineau Challenger. Blumberg lost in R32 of Binghamton Challenger this year after reaching SFs in 2017.
