This is a predictions time capsule.

CHALLENGE: Name a player to finish the year of 2011 in Top 10 that is not currently in 2010's Year End Top 10.

These few years we've seen rise of new forces in Soderling and Verdasco. The fall of Davydenko, Del Potro, Tsonga and Simon. Berdych and Youhzny having touched top 10 before now are finishing the year Top 10.

A number of talented players coming closer: e.g. Cilic, Gulbis.
Fallen heroes are returning to the spotlight: e.g. Nalbandian, Baghdatis.
New faces have grabbed attention: e.g. Golubev, Melzer.
Will it be a new generation youngster?

Who will make their move 2011?

Hewitt could maybe make the top 10 if he stayed completely healthy and got some nice draws for awhile, neither which has happened for him so probably wont.

I dont see Nalbandian or Davydenko ever getting back to the top 10 at this point but crazier things have happened for sure. Davydenko looks like he has just had one injury too many at too old an age. He doesnt look like the same player anymore. And Nalbandian was past his prime a bit even before the major hip surgery.

Oh man. I'm going to have to go with Mardy Fish who I feel went through a huge change and played some incredible summer tennis. I just hope his ankle injury at Beijing wasn't debilitating.

And I want to pick a youngster, Kei Nishikori. That's a long shot, but I would be ecstatic.

If I had to replace 2 current Top 10 I would go with Ferrer and Youhzny. I feel like they're capable of great tennis, but it also comes and goes. Nothing against these 2 great players, but I feel like they are peaking and it's only going to get tougher for them.

del potro and maybe monfils
Oh you're so right. I'm surprised he wasn't mentioned earlier. I completely forgot about his recent performances. Though many will roll eyes, I do think he's finally hitting new ground with his game.
Great candidate

I forgot Monfils. He actually is probably a better pick to displace some of the bottom end top 10 guys in 2011 than Gulbis or Querrey. I like Gulbis and Querrey and would like to see them make top 10 but both have some question marks about them.

dout these two will ever return but i'd love to see Gilles Simon and Stan Wawrinka return. Being plausible, Roddick, Youzny and ferrer drop out being replaced by Del Potro, Davydenko and Fish.

After Wawrinka's form in US Open I think he has a shot. He may be able to finally have the confidence to go deep into other Slams. He looked like he has grown into a better player.

Simon never has really gone deep into slams, but does well in smaller tournaments. I actually like his chances too. He got back some of his form during the hardcourt season. He lost to an inspired Nalbandian. Youhzny, Mardy, Djoker, Wawrinka, Soderling. Nadal in US Open. He also won metz tournament. With the exception of losing to Marcel Granollers on the semis of Valencia he has been extremely unlucky hitting guys early who have been playing the best HC tennis this season. I feel like he still picking up steam and going to keep playing better. Top 10 is a big ask, but I think he's going to show some good tennis again.

I'm going for Davydenko.

IMO, there's next to no chance Gulbis gets into the top 10. I do hope Dolgopolov does, however.
