2017 -the Freak year

When the dust eventually settles (in 20 or 30 years) this year will be remembered as the freak year when the entire field was decimated by injuries, opening up the way for two men we all thought had won their last slams to come through and win (possibly) two slams each.

Federer and Nadal have done well to grab their chance when it came, but no serious tennis follower can deny this has been the weakest tennis field since the first half of this century. In any other year both would have come away empty-handed.

I hope the injured players can come back to somewhere near their previous form, but we desperately need some of the young blood to step up. It's becoming embarrassing for the sport.

Till the Wimbledon everyone was playing

I was "there" at matches I should know

But everyone wasn't "playing Wimbledon". They were clearly injured and the tournament started to fall apart. If you are a tennis fan (as opposed to a Federer-Nadal fanatic) the semis and final of Wimbledon were an embarrassment. This US Open hasn't been much better.

AO- Federer defeats four top 10 players, including Nadal
FO - Nadal defeats two top 10 players, including the stanimal who was invincible in finals
Wim - Federer defeats last years finalist and the always dangerous Berdych and Dimitrov. For the sake of this thread i'll discount Cilic.
USO -Nadals draw has been garbage, no two ways about it.

Only the US Open field has been bad so this thread is quarter right. I've been saying since the start this US Open is a glimpse into the games future post big four and it's not pretty.

Although this thread is wrong to say the whole year has been terrible, the game certainly does need fresh blood

Disagree. Del Potro was in good shape. Playing in a top 10 level. Ask Federer. And don't come here with the excuse that he was exhausted against Nadal just because the Federer's match. Nadal exhausted him moving Delpo around the court.

Awful year to be honest. Australian Open was absolutely stunning (the number of times I've said that for this tournament in previous years as well is countless), the rest was bad.

Please come back, Earth's Mightiest Warrior.

It may be so. This US Open in particular has been freaky from the start, don't remember something similar in past decade.

But that doesn't change the quality Fedal brought this year. They played amazing. I think most of it has been some of the best tennis in recent years. But I admit I might be a bit biased.

no, it's unlikely this year is unique, but rather is a trend towards ever-increasing rates of injury, just as we've seen in other major sports. Some attribute this to longer harder seasons, or perhaps year-round training that athletes decades ago were less inclined to do when there was less money at stake, but I think this year will actually be typical of what's to come down the road.
