250lb+ players...

Im here to say that I recently witnessed a 250+ lb player that was GOOD. Really good.

I mention this because ttwarrior takes a lot of flak from members here. Many think he's trolling or full of crap. And I will concede, that the concept of a 300lb dude playing competitively at a 4.5 level sounds incredibly unrealistic, but I saw it myself and so I have to say it's possible (albeit probably pretty rare).

One of the guys on my college team weighed 325 during the tennis season. He's tall, very, very, strong, and sprints like a madman. Does not play much defensive tennis but he can strike the ball clean, and he's so athletic that he can hit off balance and on a run. He's down to 280 now but he's not working out as much between school and his coaching job.

He ain't the kind of 250+ lbs that that Suresh is though.

Decades ago, I played a local tournament in Atlanta. The director was nick named Big Gus because I think his last name was Gustafson. He was huge - about 6' 5" and over 250 lbs. He carried a lot of muscle - his arms were as big as my legs. During the tournament, I saw Gus playing on the courts and he was a very solid tennis player. Great serve, solid return - nice topspin BH and good volleys around the net. Moved reasonable well but obviously not his strength. First strike strokes as he tended to hit crisp and firm. I would have been happy to play doubles with him. Nice guy too.

I have seen a few others. I actually don't think carrying extra weight is a huge problem for doubles as it is a little easier to compensate for lack of movement with aggressive strokes and tactics. More of an issue for singles.

I played a 50+ guy that was 250+ a few years ago at Indian Wells. He annihilated me. Turns out, he said he was the USTA 5.0 doubles champ and played college for Cal back in the day. I'm pretty sure the guy could hit a dime on the court 9/10 times.

I asked him how he does in singles and he said he wins against 5.0 youngsters unless movement/fitness come into play. But he just owns the net. Wow.
Wow
Imagine if the guy was in playing shape !!!
