4.0 Match - Feedback appreciated

You’re both doing a funny little hop every time the opponent hits the ball! Why are you doing that? Is it just a weird habit you somehow developed? Looks very unnecessary and tiring!
Otherwise nice tennis. (y) :p

A 4.0 match I played. I won 6-1 6-1 6-3, im in the sweatpants

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!

Deeper prep you your bh and keep the left shoulder back.

I like your feel for the ball, mix in slices and loop

You had great discipline at thet at 01:06 to let that passing shot go long.
I would have hit that. :(

It is amazing how standards differ. Our local tennis center would call it level 2.5 to level 3, on skill level basis. I do not necessarily agree with them - just this lack of unified standards is striking.

I think a better way to say is that you find your match, this old gentleman seems to be able to bring the best in you and hit good shots. He pushes you to make difficult shots. In my opinion, if he is 10-20 years younger you might not be able to beat him.

Yeah, system is way too generalized. There are huge discrepancies in quality of different 4.0 players. Still, it's tough to judge people without actually playing them.

But guys in the video are no way lower than 3.5 by any standards. More likely legit 4.0 (oh well that’s what computer says). Even though that’s highlight reel, they play nice.
I agree they're both good, but also there is a gap between them. OP's shots seem more natural and fluid + his movement is better, though probably mostly because he's younger..

The opponent's 1HBH technique hurts my elbow from just watching it... So many older 4.0-ish dudes hit it that way though

Nice footage. I’d definitely say 4.0 tennis, both of you aren’t afraid to come to the net. You guys had some good rallies, passing shots and nice slices.

The split step comment was from another thread where it was said that 4.0 players and below don’t split step.

Why is the video flickering?
I have no clue, I took the video from PlaySight.
Learn a topspin BH. Or else get that slice lower.
I’ve been working on a more consistent knee bend to keep my slide lower but I’ll work more on my BH since it’s always been a weaker part of my game!

Haha yeah he hit the lines a good few times when I thought it was gonna go out!

I like using slices especially if the opponent has problems with it.

Haha that’s weird, we were both definitely ranked 4.0 and had numerous wins at that level prior to this match!

I definitely had an advantage because I was younger, he’s not as mobile as he would’ve been years ago.

This dicussion is just another evidence that our tennis center needs improvement on may levels...

Good stuff and thanks for posting.

A few suggestions to try I think would help are:
  1. More drive and less slice overall.
  2. More off center neutral balls (you hit down the middle passively quite often).
  3. Develop a stronger return of serve. The opponent wasn't giving you too much pace to be slicing that much and you look to be able to be more agressive there.

Something is really wrong somewhere.

One suggestion to avoid repeating what everyone else has said: More use of depth would be beneficial, especially in this case: your opponent was often standing inside the baseline for extended periods of rallies. Case in point, see 02:51, which even though you won, was through a good approach. Especially after he'd been dragged in with a shorter ball, often he wasn't recovering back properly. That should be exploited and could definitely be done with more depth, which is something — from your strokes — you definitely have the capacity to do.

Nice hitting and net play otherwise.
