Acapulco 2018 - Fed, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray, Wawrinka

Doubt it happens. Fed's second home is in Dubai, trains there many months out of the year and I believe is all-time winningest player there.

But he said he'd like to travel more and go to places he hasn't played yet. If they got the Big 3 + .5 +.5 that would be insane!

I agree. For Fed to stick it to Dubai after all the years would be shocking. Acapulco isn't exactly Buenos Aires and the S Amer cities he visited a few years back.

Think of the amount of appearance fees they'd have to dole out.

And a side note: I doubt the ATP could get involved, but having 2 500s the same week and with such lopsided fields might not be something they'd like to see.

Last year the Dubai TD told the fans that Federer would be back this year, and that Federer had a contract with them until 2018. So I doubt Federer is going to Acapulco. Didn't the Acapulco TD say they didn't need Federer during the tournament? Wonder why he's so keen to get him there.

Yes they did say that in Dubai. Of course the contract could have an out clause that Fed would ask Acapulco to pay.

To be honest because of all the British expats in DXB, if they got Murray it wouldn't be the end of the world.

25th anniversary in Acapulco. I guess he wants to make it special. And funny that he thinks because he knows Godsick that it's going to be an easy deal. I'm sure Godsick can call any agent, any time of the day or night and they pick up.

Mexico probably stands a better chance of getting Fed to play an exo - maybe put a tennis court inside the giant football stadium in Mexico City.

Cartel Money is about even with Oil Money.
And they might be more 'persuasive'.

Hmm. Maybe Fed's outing in Dubai this year could sway him. Not a big fan of Acapulco. Hope Federer stays in Dubai.

Agree, Fed should keep supporting DXB. I have gone to the DXB tournament quite a bit - very safe city. From what I heard a few yrs ago about ACA the players have guards with them to/from the hotel/stadium. There are still shootouts between rival cartels and with the police. There are beaches in other safer places...

Here some Mexican cities have some safety issues. I doubt Federer is going to jump ship. Hope I'm right.

Federer played in Istanbul a few years ago amongst all the turmoil going on. Same for when he went to Rio.

I was at the IST event that year. 2015 was a year before the crazy stuff started (at least in IST - I think in the eastern regions near Syria it had already started). May Day (1 May) was tough because the leftist march every year and the police were out in force - we had to walk outside of the 'zone' to get a taxi out to the stadium. A few people got hosed down and a few real slow learners got to feel the sting of the rubber bullets - but there were no bombs or tanks.

Oh yeah. The "coupe" was last year, but there had already been some high tension in Turkey over Erdogan.

Fed demanded that Mexico build a border wall around the stadium

He could definitely get Nadal on board (he loves playing in Latin America) but enticing the other 3 away from the tried and true will be a tad more problematic for him. Will be interesting to see how he will go about enticing them all to come over.

Murray played in 2014. Similar conditions to Indian Wells, and geographically closer (as it's the next event). Djokovic was loved there last year, so I'm confident that Rafa and Djokovic will be back there. Maybe Andy. No way Fed though.

Federer abandoning Dubai for Acapulco is as likely as Raomug winning CYGS
Or even one grand slam

I'm Mexican, so I think I have a good insight of how things are here. Acapulco isn't particularly known as a red zone of insecurity, it is dangerous but the places we worry about the most are in the center and north of the country. Being one of the most important tourist areas we have, the presence of the army and the navy is very strong so there's a lot of security for tourists. Now, having said that, the whole country has insecurity in any city, it's far from being the safest country in the world, as you said, shootouts between rival cartels and with the police still exist from time to time, but most of them are in key cities for drug traffic, and for tourists, as long as they stay in well-known and safe areas (and stop wondering in places and with people that, just by looking at, anyone with common sense would avoid), there should be no problem.

The reason why they have guards with them all the time is precisely a product of the security system the tournament has. The resort where all the players stay and the courts where the tournament is played are together, so they have practically made a bunker around to make sure nothing happens and everything is 100% monitored. Also, because there's like a 5-minutes walk between the hotel and the courts, and both places are connected, if you stay in the same resort as the players and the press you can find some of them hanging out around, so that's why there are guards close to them, to protect them in case some crazy fans try to stalk them.

im pretty sure they would also have to offer fed a private mansion from november to january with every expense paid as well, maybe he doesnt know that he spends the off season in dubai and would be a dumb idea not to take advantage of that by playing an important tournament there, not to mention why would he not play on one of the fastest surfaces on the tour to go to a dead slow one with slow conditions?

on a side note, taking fed out of the picture, i enjoy the acapulco tournament more overall, atp and wta at same time and good fields on both and switching to hardcourt was a great move

He is talking very ambitiously, but I must admit that Acapulco is attracting more and more of the elite players. It's the best 500 besides Barcelona imo.

Welcome to the boards...

Sorry, but not buying it. I go to 3 or 4 events all over the world every year. What you describe is not necessary at any other city around the world. None of them look like a police state. And the risk of an 'unhinged' fan is the same at any event. The violence in MEX may be more concentrated in other areas; but there is plenty, even in the resort cities. I live in So Cal - the local news covers the goings on in MEX for obvious reasons - and with their Left lean they'd be more likely to cover it up - but don't.

I'll be happy for you and the other fans in MEX if Fed is lured by huge $$$$ to play ACA - but I doubt it. His relationship with DXB is solid. Nadal and either Murray or Djokovic (or both) will still be a great event.

Of course you won't see the same security in other tournaments because the situation in other countries is different, even inside resorts the security is high to prevent any kind of problem product of the current state of this country. México is dangerous but there aren't gun-shootings every single day in every single city as some people/media to like say. Most news report about violence, not what happens in quiet areas, but that doesn't mean every place is full of violence. I live in the east-center part of the country, in a zone that is fought by some cartels, and, at most, there are one or two shootings per month and it's not even in the city, but in the outsides of it. That's the tendency in this country except in the northern states. The rest of the violence comes from kidnapping and that kind of crimes, but the majority of the victims of that are citizens who have been identified by cartels as someone of value. Tourists are far from being the main target.

You should come to México, either Acapulco or Los Cabos, or at least ask for some references from people who have been in those tournaments. So far, all I've heard of Acapulco are good reviews and not from Mexicans, but fans and press from other countries. Regardless of those reviews, though, I highly doubt Roger will come here because of the reasons you, @MasturB and @noobforehand20 already said.

Tournament director in Acapulco talking a lot of smack about getting Fed to abandon Dubai next year

The tournament director of Acapulco could pay Fed 10 million dollars and he wouldn't play there. Insanity.

Fed's actual home is Dubai, not Switzerland. He spends much more time in Dubai than his home soil. He'd never play in Acapulco when his fast court Dubai is 3 miles from his high rise (and yes, Nadal fans, I know he lost second round in Dubai in February).

Prepare at least 20 million $ to bring all of them to Acapulco, if not more.
Money is utterly superfluous. Roger already said in January he will never take money for "tournaments not on my schedule or tourneys I don't usually play" and he would never vulture 250's or 500's to try (futilely) to pass Connors total of tournament victories. This is a non issue. He will NEVER play Acapulco.

He spends more time in Dubai because it's easier to train there outdoors year round and in the heat than Switzerland in the winter.

When he retires he'll probably spend less time in Dubai.

Fed played Instanbul. I think he got a nice fee to go there. And he kept picking Brisbane over Doha the last few years because of a better appearance fee.

True, but what does that have to do with the topic? ;) I'm sure Roger will never step foot in Dubai once he retires. The question is whether Fed will play in Mexico when his current "home" tournament is 3 miles from his apartment in Dubai.

Again, immaterial. He played Istanbul because they paid him three million bucks and he was not confident on clay and could hoover up a 250 without having to play Nadal. He played Istanbul once, whereas Dubai is a staple in his schedule for the last 15 years. Brisbane or Doha are also immaterial since both are just warm ups for the AO. Flip a coin on those tourneys.

He is not disrupting a 20 year schedule to play Acapulco on a slow HC when Dubai has fast courts and are a 5 minute drive from his pad. This isn't rocket science.
