Adidas/Halep split?

Here's what I envision Simona looking like in a Fila kit:

LOL!

I like your thinking. However, does anybody know what happened to the manager that let Nole go? My guess is nothing...

What if the same manager negotiated the shoe deal, so that everyone knows which company makes the shoes for the world #1 while saving big on the clothing contract?

Big companies like their contract to go head to toe. I know for a fact that new balance wanted to sign Nole after the adi contract and then passed on him because he'd signed wiht Uniqlo. How many people know that Borg was wearing diadora shoes? Most of the people know his tight Fila gear ;)

Adidas prob realized she'll never win a slam after not beating 10 year old brat Ostapenko.

Doesn't make a lot of sense. Plenty of other players with Adidas sponsorship have never won a slam either. (Some have never gotten close to #1 or even reached a slam final). Did Adidas drop Caroline Woz, Fabio Fognini, Jerzy J, Jo-Wili Tsonga, or Maria Kirilenko?

I noticed that "the brat" has still been losing in 1st and 2nd rounds quite a bit. Would think that Adidas would go with someone who wins often -- even if they've not won a slam event.

It depends, and that is the genius of taking a different approach.

Actually, NB decided that focusing on advertising their shoes with Nole is not worth it, while Adi decided that the only worthy thing with him is advertising only their shoes.

I seriously doubt that Adidas lacks the buying power to afford him, if they wanted to, so signing him only for shoes and not for apparel must have been a conscious decision.

As for Borg, I am pretty sure that among the tennis fans his equipment history is well known, just like I know for a fact that outside of them noone would recognise Borg in his iconic outfit(s).

Halep is probably just asking a ton of $$ and adidas don't think its worth it after the RG final. Maybe she won't budge from her number…she also might be under the influence of her friend Tiriac and tough to negotiate with.

Too late for most tennis manufacturer for 2018, most have already used up their budget for top level player endorsements. Up and coming players there is a set a side space for grabbing them however!

You could be right. OTOH, Simona is known for her movmement -- her ability to cover the court -- to run down balls that most other WTA player would not get to. You would think that would be highly prized by a shoe manufacturer.

I am sure some sort of deal will come through before AO main draw starts! If not, Halep may not have any clothing and shoe endorsements for the full 2018 year!

Some talk of a deal with Nike to the tune of $1.7m per season.... will see how this story develops over the next 24 hours....

That's a lot of coin! On the other hand, she IS the no. 1.

I like her, but man is it crazy that in the women's game you can become world #1 without winning a major. I can't remember the last men's player ranked #1 that didn't win at least one slam. Marcelo Rios, maybe?

Yeah, pretty sure that the last one was Ríos.

Nike does not need Halep.... I don’t understand why they dump 1.7 mil euro per a year for 4 years????
Too many Nike women’s lines, they should reduce lines.
Not many people cares about Serena and sharapova lines. Their special shoes had embarrassingly slow sales.
Usually women does not spend much for tennis gears and too many small companies dump their products for deep discounts. Women prefer to have color match instead of brand match.

Nike should spend 1.7 mil euro per a year to hire multiple designers for Tennis.
It will benefit more than Halep’s contract in my opinion.

This is a pretty wide spread misconception: it is not a design problem, it's a marketing issue. It is always the marketing team that decides what design goes to market or not. Let me give you an example. Not too long ago, each year, GM had always been hiring the top graduate of the Art Institute in Pasadena, CA. And for the longest time the consumers were complaining that GM cars were too boring. How is that possible? They had the best crop of designers after all. Well, it's not their designers, it's their marketing team that sucked.

Marketing team should not select colors.
Marketing team should not interfere design of shoes.
Marketing team should not involve to develop materials.

Marketing team is concentrating on products which they have and try to sell those ridiculous products.
Think about some of women’s apparels. Skirts are ridiculously shorts and top was hard to distinguish between extremely shorts dress and top shirts. Marketing team should know these products will not sell to regular women tennis players. Some of my local stores decided to not getting Nike apparels because many women complained about those.

If your story is true, Nike has bigger problems.
Also GM hires top graduate student in CA, that’s problem too. There are so many talented designers in US and in the world, why GM hires top students from CA only??? Probably GM has narrow minded vision???

Design team should be independent and working with marketing team.
Marketing team should give general data/ideas to design team then design team designs products based on those data/ideas plus their material development team.
As soon as products started to disconnect with consumers, entire company goes south in my opinion.
Obviously endorsing top athletes and not making good products won’t benefit anything too.
ST and uniqlos with Djokovic, Kswiss and possibly UA might be good example. Asics is going similar way to Kswiss but they have decent shoes in their products so time will tell.

First, all the tennis clothes were "tight" then.
Second, everyone who watched him know that Borg played in his Diadora BB Elite shoes.

Q. People notice you ended with adidas the end of last season and don't currently have a sponsor. I don't know if you're close to getting one, what that process has been.
SIMONA HALEP: Yeah, my people are working for me on this stuff. They are talking. But the conversation has just begun. I have no contract now. I'm still with no brand clothes.

I just want to make sure that I will choose what I like, and also the brand to like me. It's really important to have a nice outfit and to feel good in the clothes. So I'm not rushing. I will wait what future gives me.

Q. You have a lot of freedom to pick whatever you want to wear now.
SIMONA HALEP: Yeah.

Q. Is that sort of fun in a way? Usually you used to just get the package from adidas and wear that. Now you get to express yourself more maybe.
SIMONA HALEP: Yeah, it's an interesting period, to be honest (smiling). For the moment, are many brands, so I don't know which one is going to be. For sure is going to be one. But we will see in the future.

I really want to have something nice, to have nice feeling with the future brand that I will wear.

Q. Are you going to stick to your red dress from Shenzhen for here?
SIMONA HALEP: Yes, same.

Q. How does it work? If you don't have a clothing supplier, do you go to the shop?
SIMONA HALEP: No, I ordered. How do you call the ladies that are making the clothes?

Q. Seamstress.
SIMONA HALEP: Yeah, I sent a picture. Was a site, in China actually, and one of my managers helped me, and in 24 hours I had the outfit, and were perfect (smiling). I was lucky.

Q. How did you find them?
SIMONA HALEP: On Internet.

Q. You just searched on the Internet?
SIMONA HALEP: Yes. Everything is on Internet now (smiling). I was a little bit stressed.

Q. You designed your own clothes?
SIMONA HALEP: No. I chose the model. But it's plain, come on. Nothing special there. It looks good, in my opinion. I like it.

Q. Do you ever think you'd want your own clothing line like Venus has?
SIMONA HALEP: No, I will not have that.

Q. Did you consider getting a T-shirt with the No. 1 on it?
SIMONA HALEP: No. I'm not that type of person.

Funny seeing Halep wearing a AO visor that looks like it could have been bought at the souvenir store. She looked more like a fan with her gear than player.

Adidas has done this twice now in recent memory. First making the shocking oversight with Djokovic and now Halep.

I'm assuming the Adidas employees involved with the "Djokovic Mistake" ended up in concrete boots. But it would intriguing if any of the same people had been involved in both sponsorship blunders.

A couple of things and I will start on topic for now, Halep seems like she wants to be invested in the process with whom ever she signs with. Seems as if the days of send me a box of apparel in my size and I wear it are gone. And that is good, to take the as a pro and not a con from not having a deal right now. I mean depends on how much you trust the design language but she was key in the Defiant Bounce as she liked the Y3 models that were made for the French and those took a lot of the tech and fit aspect to the Bounce.

As far as Nike and other brands being controlled by the marketing team while it may not be as cut and dry as that I would say that without a doubt they are choosing the color blocking used. I feel we can say that as it spins well within the surface used, the environment of the major or season depending on where we are in the year. For me and this is likely my personal choices bleeding onto the key board but I do see the need for color pops. It is a major way to keep the looks fresh and justify 6-8 different colorways of the Vapors for example. But a darker short lets say navy blue paired with a similar color albet lighter shirt maybe like a sky blue and than boom "Lava" shoes with white swoosh and white socks all of a sudden goes together and seems composed while giving you the flash they want at the Australian. And again those are just examples so dont get hung up on that but I think you do get the point. Let the designers come up with the designs and the color blocking guide if you want towards a theme but these monochromatic neons and fades of volt are terrible.

Having said all of that and I know essentially a wall of text but it is why Haleps kit seems to pop even if the brands blending from all over the place make it seem like an afterthought but it is a nice look a classy silhouette and it befits her personality.

Her dress looks great on her and I hope to see different colors in same design. At least we know she will look good winning her first major.

Agreed. I am actually quite surprised how good looking that dress is. Her shoes don't work as nicely with her dress, but they do match the court color and that helps.

Not sure if it's unprecedented, but it's still head-scratching that the number one player in the world is in the final of a grand slam with no clothing sponsor.

She's prob just asking a sh*t ton of money and just holding out till someone pays it.

Will be interesting if she shows up in the final wearing a new sponsors clothes.
