Advantages of tennis clothes?

Hey I currently wear basketball shorts and t-shirts to the court when I play. I have 1 adidas tennis shirt that my friend bought me for a tennis tournament, we wanted to match ;) lol.. http://www.tennis-warehouse.com/descpageMAADIDAS-AMC5C.html# . I really like the lightness of it but I find the clothing too expensive $30+. If I had a job I would buy some but I am only 15yo. Also, the shorts are kind of expensive but what are the advantages? Is it the lightness of them, the thin material?

When I was in high school, I used to play in tennis shorts and T shirts. I couldn't afford anything fancy. 20 yrs later I started playing serious again and I couldn't see myself spending $30+ for a tennis shirt.

I tried a couple and they are great. They are lighter and wick away the sweat much better than a T shirt. T shirts got pretty heavy and stick to the body. Also, I notice the tennis shirts stand up to washing very well. If you can afford them, they are worth it. I must have dozens of tennis shirts now. I usually buy them after season when they are 30% - 50% off. Nike is my favorite shirt brand.

If you have Ross, Marshalls or Mervyns type stores, you can find Dri-fit or Clima-cool type shirts for very cheap. Usually under $20. Sometimes under $10.

This is a good tip. I just bought 3 Adidas Climacool "3-stripe" tennis shirts for $8.99 each off the clearance rack at a Marshalls. :D

Advantages to "real" tennis apparel? The benefits of the fabric have already been mentioned. Also, tennis shirts seem to fit better for movement - they don't pull on you like t-shirts can when you hit the ball.

I used to play in tennis shorts and t-shirts pretty much exclusively. With the newer no-collar tennis shirts, that's pretty much all I wear now.

play well,
Andrew

The more technical clothes don't get heavy when they're wet like cotton t-shirts do. Good tennis shorts have pockets that are sewn in so the lining doesn't pull out when you pull the ball out. I like to wear tennis skirts - they are so comfortable and there is no restriction on movement. Don't see too many guys wearing them, though!

I did find several Adidas tennis shirts recently at either TJ Maxx or Ross.

I always wear "real" tennis shirts, I find that they are much more comfortable to play in. Also relatives LOVE buying clothes for birthdays, so finally you can make them buy something good. P.S. I really hope you're a girl. cghipp I mean...

The advantage of tennis clothes is that you can't play on the courts I use without them, and they must be white and the shirt must have a collar. (Subtle trim is acceptable though.) Can you believe in this day and age I play at a "tennis-whites-only" facility?

The funny thing is, since all my clothes have to be white to play on my 'home' courts, white tennis clothes are all I have. So when I go play on the public courts in my town or in the Bronx, I'm the only clown wearing whites since I like the feel of them and the pockets and don't want to switch to regular shorts and a T shirt just to establish my street cred. I assume I look particularly stupid because I'm a very well dressed player -- but not a very good one.

You really have to ask yourself whats the advantage to wear certain clothing for any sport? Tennis clothing is specifically engineered for playing tennis in, basketball clothing is made to play basketball in, and so on.....If you only had tennis shorts to play basketball in would you ask the same question in reverse?

Thank's everyone, I currently have around $100 and am probably going to buy a pair of shoes $40 and spend the rest about $60 on tennis clothes. I really need tennis clothes, I have 1 adidas clima-cool shirt and it feels great very light and the sweat doesn't get sticky.

i too used to wear just like a regular shirt and shorts while playing tennis, and it wasnt bad at all except for cold days where the sweat sticks to your skin and you feel the cold of it...

but recently i've actually worn just dri-fit tennis apparel while playing tennis, and although it does not make a huge difference, my game has improved a lot before i started wearing actual tennis apparel, and i must say it is lighter, and does look kind of cooler

it does not make you play better, i mean if nadal started wearing cotton sleeveless shirts and real army pants or federer wore cargo shorts...it'd set new trends, and they'd still win what they're winning today....maybe they'd just change shirts much more often...

tennis shoes however, are a must...dont wear anything but tennis shoes while playing tennis

If you are pretty careful with your shopping you can get 3 shirts and 2 shorts with your $60. All name brand stuff.

yes, and since you like your adidas climacool shirt you might like the shorts as well...i dont know the exact prices off TW but i'm sure you can buy what...3 shirts and 2 shorts,...in any dept store on sale or even on the adidas discounted apparel here on TW

if you go with nike from TW, i think cheapest you'll get in dri-fit material is a $25 crew shirt....but there are like a limited number of 9 inch inseam shorts from the fall line for $25, also $30 for tactical shorts

C9 people say is very cheap and works...

the shirts i think make much more of a difference than the shorts...

i mean... bball shorts and tennis dont mix well for me.. they fall off and are too bag for proper movement.... but i only have like one pair of genuine TENNIS shorts... the other stuff are just various sports shorts (like nylon stuff) with pockets... some are better than others.... but it just comes down to the fit... and of course... pockets are a MUST!....

I have 2 tennis shirts and a bunch of tennis shorts. Reason is because i dont find a good reason for tennis shirts. They feel better yes, but still not worth the extra money in my opinon when you can just change shirts. I also dont play with a shirt in the summer. I have a bunch of shorts though because i also use them when i play other sports...so i just got tennis shorts for them...not much difference in my opinon.

Ever heard of a thing called style?

Jesus people, think about how you present yourself on court. Yes, it does matter. Style does matter. Basketball shorts look stupid on court. This is tennis.

So this is in TW..? Hm, i'll look around just gotta find it, lol.

Maybe someone could like compile a list for me? Lol.. Of the prices and the shirt/shorts.
I'm really aiming for 2 shorts and 2 shirts and adidas, lol. I calculated some shirts and shorts I found cheapest on Adidas and the cheapest I got I believe was $66..

Well I might go to $80, lol.. Since my mom is giving me $20 this week.

i can only speak for nike apparels:

tennis shorts: much thinner, breathable compared to nike/jordan basketball shorts, fit is less baggy and long compared to bball shorts(even with nadal's current shorts). contrary to what some said, most bball shorts i bought have pockets too.

tennis tops: not much difference in shirts as most are dri fits, i just find the sizing different from bball, tennis sizes run small.

I remember buying 2 tennis shorts at Sports Authority for $10 each and I didn't look at the size and their a bit too small, also when I put the ball in my pocket it's hard for me to take out haha, cause the pockets are too small I guess.. They are thinner than basketball shorts and shorter too.. The ones I bought don't go below the knee, that's how they are I guess..

I also have tennis shorts that they distribute to us players in the highschool team from last year.. Forgot to turn them back in :X

I am really interested in adidas, really doesn't matter but just want them not to be made of like 100% cotton and stuff, more for playing shirts.

When was the last time you saw a guy wear SKIRTS?

The sleeves are shorter so you can freely swing. Obviously the shorts have pockets to hold tennis balls. The material is not too thin and not too thick. For example running/training dri-fit shirts are very thing.. These shirts need to keep you warm and cool at the same time. I just can't wear any other sports apparel for tennis.

The other MAJOR advantage of a proper tennis shirt - with collar- is that it provides the back of your neck with protection against the sun. Too much sun on the back of your neck and you'll get sunstroke so, having a bit of extra covering for that part of your body makes a lot of sense. Doesn't have to be an expensive shirt you choose (I usually pay $10-15 max), just so long as it isn't too heavy and breathes well.

Everyone should own Tacchini and Fila from the 70s and 80s, then tennis will return to its glory days.

Agree 100%!! :D

Also so I can wear my Tacchini and Fila collection on the court without people looking at me funny........not that I really care anyway but.......;)

Yes, Fila and Tacchini had most of the "big names" in tennis during their heyday.

Fila:
Borg
Vilas
Becker

Sergio Tacchini:
McEnroe
Connors
Gerulaitis
Sampras
Tanner

And many other not as big names. Everyone wanted to wear Fila and Tacchini back then but they were both outrageously expensive. So if anyone thinks $65 for a Nike tennis shirt is expensive, think again. Borg's Fila shirt was probably more like $200 in today's dollars.

borg's fila for $200 in today's dollars? ...borg's legendary fila red jacket is $250 here on TW!

McEnroe switched to Nike later in his career, just like Sampras did, but I believe McEnroe won all of his Grand Slams wearing Sergio Tacchini.

Yeah, Borg's original jacket back then probably sold for at least $400 in today's dollars, so $250 for the re-issue is actually a steal. :-o
